iPhone 3G Hardware Unlock Uses Your Existing SIM Card...Kinda
Posted by Adrian Covert at 12:30 PM on August 5, 2008
Yeah, USB Fever just started taking pre-orders for this super thin iPhone hardware unlock tool that attaches to your SIM card, but be forewarned — it requires that you cut the corner off your SIM in order to work. If you're up for the challenge, it will supposedly start shipping on August 20 for US$35. [USB Fever via iPhone Atlas via IntoMobile]

Avoid this product at all cost! Although it does unlock the iPhone 3G, there is a CRITICAL design flaw. The added thickness of the adapter + your Sim Card causes it to get stuck in your Sim Card tray. I've now damaged my tray slightly by having to pry it open. Do a quick Google search and you'll see this is a typical problem for these adapters. Above all, avoid the U.S. reseller mooglex.com -- they promise a 15-day money-back guarantee on their website but ignored my emails for a refund.

you cant fuck it up, its just plastic there. the only thing that matters on the sim card looks all shiny and metal

@leetXcore: meh, no big deal. just about any GSM provider (and definitely AT&T, it's happened to me) will replace your SIM for free. just tell them that you lost it.

Considering SIM cards are free from AT&T, and since with the iPhone a soft reset is impossible, this is the second method used to fix things. Replacing the SIM. For free.
I worked there. I know.

this makes sense, if you have AT&T in the USA and go abroad, you don't have to hack up your USA sim card, only the prepaid one you pick up abroad. This seems like a good option for travelers.

oh and btw. would be silly of you to do this with a AT&T sim, when the WHOLE IDEA is that you want to use another carrier, that be a european or whater else you got in the states that use GSM tech...

read my story:
note that its been only 1 day and other users using this method have experienced it randomly losing signal and never be able to get another signal with the sim bypass.

Sim cards are free. There is no such thing as a warranty because they cost like a penny and the store will give you new ones if your breaks.

@leetXcore: If you are a 100% idiot, it is quite possible that you will screw it up, yes. Think twice if you are stupid.
In other news, a hole punch bought at Staples for $199 will do the trick.
So suck it.

I've had AT&T Sim cards die before, and they don't charge you to replace them. Might be hard explaining the hole, but it's good practice for your improv routines.

@Stacky Botrus: One hundred and ninety nine dollars for a hole punch? Damn, your Staples is a rip off.

All SIM cards that I have seen have cuts in the corner. Maybe only in the UK they have them.
