iPhone 3G Gets Hot and Melty, Cooks Dude's Leg
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 6:15 AM on August 2, 2008
While the iPhone 3G definitely feels warmer than the original, it shouldn't get hot enough to cook human flesh. Or melt. But a MacRumors forum member says he fell asleep with his iPhone 3G in his pocket and woke up when he felt a burning sensation in his pants (not the good kind either). He says he pulled out the phone, which was incredibly hot. Like, plastic-meltingly hot. Check out the damage to the dock connector (and his leg), where you can really see the bubbly, heat-warped plastic:

He says that he had 3G disabled, no push, and the screen set to lock after a minute--so the phone shouldn't have been active. It's definitely an anomaly we haven't heard of before, if this report is legit. Has anyone else noticed their phone getting uncomfortably warm? [Mac Rumors via Gearlog - Thanks Robert!]

Firstly.. why is the cover blue, secondly.. how could it get so hot to burn him through his pants? sounds more like ironing with your clothes on, thirdly.. what man shaves his legs?

Mine has got very hot when charging - but not all the time. Other times it's fine.
I wouldn't say it gets plastic-melting hot but uncomfortable-to-hold hot.

my iphone 3g got so hot it melted the third party charger it was plugged into. luckily it still works fine, but deargod, even the cheapest plastic shouldn't get melted by the thing its charging!

@protocol6v: I was thinking the same thing. And the connector pic - he can only do blurry on that? Or is it so it doesn't look so much like possibly the charger was plugged in and he wrenched it back and forth a bunch to make it warp that way... then again, I'm always a skeptic unless I see it in person...

I have an 1st generation iPod Touch and I notice whenever I download an App from the App Store on my iPod the download can hang and gets very hot, then I have to reboot and restore. This happened to me twice, I don't know if it's a bad 3rd party App that screws up the iPod or what, this never happened before the App Store was introduced.
The work around is downloading Apps from the computer then syncing the apps to the iPod or iPhone.

The blue iphone photoshopped to show the cracks. That explains the color changing couch as well. He called CS and they're getting him a replacement. Also, he emailed Steve-O, but no reply as of yet.

Leaked Apple press release:
In reference to the recently reported overheating iPhone 3G incident...
This is not a malfunction, it is an added feature that failed to make it into the documentation. It is the "space heater" feature. To activate this feature you need only fall asleep with the iPhone in your pocket; it will automagically know when you are fully asleep and begin to gently warm your body to ensure that you are able to attain the most comfortable rejuvenating sleep possible...
Or alternatively this may have been one of the example units for the newly beta testing "iPhone U92" which contains an experimental uranium nuclear micro-reactor...

@nosebleed: @protocol6v: @Xavoc: @KBeat: As someone with large leg muscles (calves and thighs), I have seen this hair pattern before. When I would were pants that were tight around those muscle groups, the hair would "wear" down in a pattern similar to that. Especially near pocket areas where the fabric rubs against the skin, like pockets, knees, etc... The fabric almost pulls the hair out slowly and stunts the grow-back.

Mine gets "warm" after a few hours of downloading, video playing, and general processor abuse, but it never gets anywhere near as warm as say, my laptop or anything else that you generally put near your body when using.
Sounds like it was just a faulty circuit in the phone that eventually just went bad, or a bad battery. Doesn't matter where the device comes from, who makes it, etc, things like this happen.
Now if it turns into a 1 in 5 iPhones type thing, then I will start leaving it out of my pocket.

I've done tests with the iPhone to see how warm it gets when in heavy use. Heavy use being 3G, active tracking in google maps with GPS/3G, MP3's playing, and the iPhone charging on a car adapter. It got warm enough that it was a bit uncomfortable holding it in my hand...but I would say it was very warm...or slightly hot.
Temps for that test (taken with a Fluke IR gun):
Ambient (temperature of console just below where I was holding it): 71F
Front: 99F
Back: 102F
No where near hot enough to melt plastic, and like I said...just slightly uncomfortable to hold onto with my hand.
I would say this case is an anomaly.

I mean, the burn doesn't look serious, Apple's replacing his phone for him, they'll probably take his in for research as to why this happened, possibly throw in something for free, make sure he doesn't need a doc, etc. Why do these people all start getting suit-happy about it? Is it like a freakin' lottery these days? If you have the product that gives you something less painful than a sunburn, you've hit the jackpot and can get millions from them? WTF? Grrr... Matt, I think that the burning sensation that you speak of is called the "clap." Yup, I wonder how you would know about that. What, how do I know about that? Ladies, just message me to find out.
That really sounds dirtier than when it was in my head, but what the hell, I'm posting anyways, then I'm going to shave my legs too.

Complete Phoney!
for one, he shaved his leg after it was burned. even with a minor burn that would be unbearable.
in the first picture, where it's black, the connector is not damaged, in the second it is. on his forum posts, only the blue one has the messed up connector.
the burn patterns on the pre-shave picture don't match the burn patterns post-shave.
he's from arkansas, (as am I) and looks like someone I've met before who is a complete mcdouche.

The first pic is in Black and white (Look at the couch) and the second pic in color, the phone is blue. I am starting to wonder if this guy did paint his phone and it did cause it to overheat somehow.

nevermind the blue iPhone.... i really hope everyone's kidding about asking about the blue iPhone.
anybody ever consider that it's probably just a reflection? The reflection off my sword scabbards of the blue paint on my ceiling makes the scabbards look pretty damn cool.

Well I got th 8GB version on the 3rd day and two days later that phone got real hot (all functions were one). I took it to the Aple store and told them and they said no way, so made a quick 2 mintue call and they got to feel how hot it got and at that point they waived my wait to go on line and I got the 16GB black one instead (they were out of the 8GB). So with this, I say i do beleive the issue with the user.

Yes, I've got a first generation iPhone. I've noticed that it does get hot for no reason. I will have it off and just charging and it just gets hot. I've had to reboot it several time to stop what ever process it was running in the background. Before the 2.0 update it got a little warm but only when I was using it on a regular basis. I'm a little bit hot under the collar wasting my time trying to figure out what's going on.

Perhaps if he did not shave his legs, there would have been enough air flow for cooling.

@ElementalDragon:
If its is a reflection consider this why is the blue color so uniform, even after the curved edges.
A blue reflection on a single plain of the phone i could accept, but fully blue like this clearly shows something else is going on, maybe photoshop?

I have 3 iphone 3G units and about 15 2.5G units.
They do not reflect like that (blue).
Had that plastic melted as he claims he would have a 3rd degree burn. The plastic flow temperature is well above 150 F
I call shenanigans.
Seeing as, if i place a 150 F or hotter item against your pants you will still end up with severe burns. The photo shows at worst 1st degree burns if that.
Hopefully he will press legal action and end up in trouble for the fraud that he is.
As for battery life, if you do not have 3G service turn it off. Also if you are playing games or using Apps be sure to exit them when sleeping the phone. Leaving them running causes the battery life to greatly diminish.
/that is all

funny this should happen because I was converting a video from .mov to .mp4 last night and I had my macbook on my hand. I accidentally fell asleep and when I woke up I had a small burn on my hand, its fine now but damn it hurt like hell the night b4. i think if the bottom of my macbook got to somewhere near 100 f.

Bad white balance on the camera end of things could have turned the phone blue. As for possibilities, could some sort of freeze or process hang have caused the processor to run extremely hot? My macbook pro has a tendency to do that when it fails to go into sleep mode sometimes. I wouldn't notice that it was hanging, put it down for an hour, and then when I picked it up again and put it on my lap... OUCH. Pull up process manager and I find that the CPU was running at 100% for the past hour. Since the iPhone is basically a small OSX system, couldn't it suffer some of the same software glitches? Also, after owning 2 mac computers, I can definitely say that apple has a very cavalier attitude towards heat issues in their products.

i also notice my 1 gen phone gets very hot, espeically when i put it to charge, this never use to happen before only after the 2.0 update, if my phone is close dying and i put it to charge it would get hot to the point where i have to take it off the charge for a little to cool down before i can hold it comfortably. apple IMO really screwed up in this firmware update.

My iPhone does get VERY VERY HOT sometimes. When this happens, the screen goes black and I have to do a re-start. Very odd. I am sure (for no reason) that is yet another OS bug.
But it does not get hot enough to burn anything.
I am looking forward to the new version of the OS.

I gave posting this earlier a shot but the comment didn't show up, could it have been that he had some loose change in his pocket? I once got a penny stuck in the dock connector of my gen1 iphone and it bridged the contacts so that the phone thought it had been docked. It got warm enough to be uncomfortable and make me pull the phone out of my pocket, that's when i found the penny stuck in there.

Obviously the iphone burned the hair off of his thigh. It probably spread like wildfire melting all of his hair off.

Did he have change in his pants? I once got a penny stuck in the dock connector of the 1st gen phone and only noticed it once my pocket got uncomfortably warm...i figured the metal completed the circuit and the phone responded as if it had been docked and started trying to charge.

This isn't an iPhone. iPhone doesn't come in blue. iPhone has a serial number on the back. iPhone doesn't have the other symbols on the bottom there. This is probably a Chinese slantiPhone. @92BuickLeSabre:

This phone is not an iPhone. iPhones have a serial number on the back, and they don't have all the other weird symbols on the back. I work at an Apple store, so I know this is true.

Mine froze while I was syncing. Didn't realize it until I came back in the room about 40 minutes later. I figured it's so damn slow backing up that it just hadn't finished, but when I picked it up, the stupid phone was really hot. I spend more time resetting the phone than I do talking on it. And of course, the battery was basically completely drained at that point to top it off.
