iPhone 3G Coming to Best Buy Next Month, Samsung Instinct Reportedly Bummed
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 10:45 AM on August 13, 2008
AppleInsider reports that the iPhone 3G will almost certainly be coming to Best Buy as soon as September 7th, giving the the retailer the distinction of being the first outlet to sell the device that isn't part of its immediate family. The announcement, expected tomorrow, would bring the iPhone to 970 Best Buys around the country, as well as 16 more dedicated Best Buy Mobile Retailers.
In many ways this seems like a practical move, as Best Buy already sells AT&T phones, carries Apple computers at most of its locations and has sold a tremendous number of iPods for Apple over the years. Additionally, they've just completed a retraining regimen for their mobile departments to help provide slightly better service than we've come to expect from the army of indeterminately bitter, listless teenagers that patrol the appliance and music sections.
Showing up on the shelves of such a ubiquitous retailer will help give the iPhone the availability to match its mind share, but expect to hear about a whole new wave of customer complaints when it hits the shelves at the biggest box of them all. [AppleInsider]

Luckily the "I am rich" app was removed. I'm sure they would blame it on Johnny Utah if it ended up on your iPhone after having them "fix" it. Of course, how could they fix it, since there's no USB port to plug their magic key in?

Does this mean an extra $200, for Geek Squad to open the box?

If only they could get the darn thing to work properly first. I'm so sick of seeing NO SERVICE on my iPhone 3G in the heart of the San Francisco financial district. Get it right before you spread it around, Apple.

Yes, because I can't get an iPhone 3G until September 11 (bad day much?) because I'm not qualified for an upgrade until then. I wonder if they've restocked already.

@rcast1986: Apparently you don't work for Best Buy, because you acted like BBY is able to give it's employees a discount on Apple products. That is simply not true. Apple is price protected. Just like Bose. No discount. Accommodations are different, but the iPhone still does not qualify for accommodation pricing.
In other words, you're wrong and your smart ass reply just made you look like an idiot.
Back on topic, though: how is Best Buy going to promote the iPhone in areas that don't have 3G coverage (eg-most of the U.S.)? Oughta be a tough sell...."See sir, this here is how fast a page would load if the Death Star ever got off their asses and upgraded their network".

It's 4:23, I'm restoring my iPhone 3G for the billionth time. Replaced already. Same problem. Keeps getting stuck at Apple logo when I restart/install apps/sync/have phone crash. The white apple logo of death is causing me to have irrational thoughts. Like bringing my iPhone to Geek Squad. Restore almost complete. It's late/early and no sleep... I hate these late night restore sessions....

@jayhawk11: "Back on topic..."
I always thought the topic of these Best Buy threads was the feuding between BB employees that inevitably seems to erupt in them. Let the games continue!
@thechansen: Which is why I figured on waiting for the 32gb 3G and the kinks to be worked out before upgrading from the 2G. Anyways, you probably shouldn't be making any rash decisions you might live to regret while in a sleep-deprived stupor, like bringing an iPhone to the Geeksquad. That could be painful. No offense to the black-tied white-shirted among us.

@Ken_Darrow: It renders really well, the problem I have with it's browser is that 1/2X is too small, but 1x view makes the font a little too big, requiring scrolling to read. If there was a middle zoom, I wouldn't need to scroll sideways. I don't like/get it.

They sell iPod headphones for $20 above Apple Store price.
I wonder what kind of opposite-discounts they'll have for iPhone and it's accessories.

I used to work at Best Buy not too long ago. I can confirm that Apple products are price-locked. The same with consoles. Is it really that shocking that iPhone is coming to one of the most successful electronics retailers?
On a related note, is there any credit for that photo? I really, really think that's my old store in Greensboro, NC. I recognize the two banners and the old guy standing there, I think. If it's the Greensboro store, that's probably Frank. He's a bit talkative, but he's an honestly good guy, if a bit, ah, slow on the uptake.
