iPhone 2.0.1 Update Now Available (Also Available For iPod Touch)
Posted by Jason Chen at 9:11 AM on August 5, 2008
A reader just tipped us off to the iPhone 2.0.1 update being out RIGHT NOW. Just fire up your iTunes and click the old update button and you'll be able to grab it. We're updating now and will let you know what's different. Right now all we see is "Bug Fixes" listed under the changelog, but there's a security update info link in the update screen as well, so it might be that. [Thanks tipster!]
Update: It's an E. Honda-like 249MB, so this will take a few minutes to download.
Update 2: iPod Touch users can also update.

as long as you sync BEFORE you do the update and say YES to transferring apps to iTunes, you should be able to then sync those apps(including NetShare and BoxOffice) back to your phone once you've done the firmware update, regardless if those apps are no longer for sale in the iTunes store.
i would imagine that this firmware/itunes update has as much to do with transferring apps off the phone and then sharing them with people that haven't purchased them as anything else, aside from basic bug fixes.

The first time I updated a phone it wiped out everything!!!!

I'll wait to see what happens to peoples app data before I update...

I am glad to read it the patch is large. Hopefully this means there are tons of bug fixes.
iPhone OS 2.0, very much like Leopard was not commercial quality. I hope this is the patch which we need to have a reliable and pleasant experience.
The lags, crashes, and bugs have made me strongly dislike the iPhone experience and given me serious buyer remorse. (I bought three iPhone 3Gs) I hope this patch makes this a quality product.(Software quality at least. Word is still out on hardware...)

@ThisIsSharksTerritory: There are a lot of good reasons to release the full firmware.. With a device like this, in the hands of so many people, you want to absolutely minimize the chances of screwing up anybody's data... By completely replacing the firmware, you are vastly reducing the number of things that can go wrong. Integration issues are a bitch. Given the installed base, even a small one could cost millions in support.
Also, let's not forget that your friend in the boonies is in the EXTREME minority these days. Most people (at least, people who also have iphones) have cable, or at least DSL. Hell, the iphone 3g itself could download the firmware in 10 minutes or less.

I really think they've covered the 99% scenario here, and for the 1 percent with iphones and dialup (and I seriously doubt it's even near 1%) it's not like they can't get it, they just have to be patient.

@s017jrs:
yeah, unreliable wifi. worked fine on my 1st gen phone before 2.0 update, works like ass afterward. basically, when i can get it to connect (which is only about 1/2 the time) it cuts back and forth between wifi and edge, basically making wifi unusable. there are a lot of people posting about it on the apple support forums, so i'm not alone. for example:
[discussions.apple.com]
[discussions.apple.com]
[discussions.apple.com]
[discussions.apple.com]
and those are just about half of the threads about this on the front page only.
i have updated and am testing now...

the 3G tethering is pretty fast. I did restart it after it updated, not sure if that made a diff, but Netshare is continuing to work. The program sorta sucks tho, if you don't keep it active it doesn't stay running for me after the screen shuts off for a few minutes, i have to restart netshare or re-select the netshare wifi in settings again, quite a pain, only would use it in emergency, otherwise I can do what I need to right on the iPhone. To really keep netshare tethered you'd have to keep one finger moving the screen so it doesn't shut off, at least for me, so I'm not impressed with the tethering actually, at all.

@CutePuppyz: Well, this is way I did it. Keep it unplugged from your PC. I first went into the settings on the Touch. On the bottom of the list you go under reset. Then select erase contents (the second item on the list). It will warn you that it will take 2 hours etc... Go ahead and select erase. Once it starts let it run for about 1 minute. Then force it to stop by holding down the top power button and the home button until it restarts.
You will now get a screen that asks you to connect to your PC. Do that and iTunes will say that it needs to restore. Click restore and it will start to download 2.01.
I'm in middle of restoring from backup now....I will let you know the outcome. It should be a-ok since it actually downloaded the update fine.

Official instructions for using Netshare with Vista:
It got it to work under Vista you have to create a network in Vista by
1. clicking the network icon in the taskbar and choose connect or disconnect.
2. click "setup a connection or network" and choose "setup a wireless ad-hoc network" name the network and add security if you want click the save network box and hit next then click close after network is created. Vista should automatically connected to this new network.
3.Open "Network and Sharing Center" and choose manage wireless networks and then click adapter properties.
4. Click Internet Protocol Version 4 and choose properties then choose "use the following IP address" and enter in 192.168.10.2 and make sure your subnet is 255.255.255.0, that's it leave everything else empty. Save your changes.
5. Open the Control Panel and choose internet options, chose the connections tab and select LAN. Then hit the advanced button under proxies. In the SOCKS field type in 192.168.10.1 (which will be the IP of your iPhone)and for port # choose 1080 and save your changes.
Your PC is now setup next setup the iPhone.
6. open setting and choose Wi-fi on the iPhone and it should see your newly created network enter password if you set one. Choose it and hit the blue arrow icon.
7. Choose static and in the IP address field enter 192.168.10.1 and make sure the subnet is 255.255.255.0. You may also want to disable auto-lock on the iPhone cause that will close out the program after a set amount of time.
8. Hit the Home button and open netshare.
9. Then for the bad part, open SAFARI (even on Vista it only works on SAFARI) and you can surf the net.

Downloaded, installed, and ready within 20 minutes. It did a couple of reboots I think.
Synch is much faster and seams to be faster across the board. I don't seam to be getting the lag that I was getting when my contacts were loading and no lag on the keyboard when contacts load (I've tried loading up the system so that maybe it pages out and it still seams to be performing at a much better pace. I'm hoping for Safari to be crash proof.
I would love to see some release notes. Apple does an excellent job of delivering stuff you don't need to read the manual for but it would have been nice to see some release notes of some sort for the people that want to know. I'm a geek but I'm a customer too. :)

Well, 2.01 loaded fine. But I still see problems with it. First, the iTunes keeps saying that I have multiple updates for the same app. It would, for example, show me 3 copies of the NYTimes to update. I went into the apps folder and saw multiple copies of the same apps with numbers after them, e.g. Times, Times1, Times2, Times3...So I deleted all but one copy. However, iTunes seems to still remember how many copies you downloaded for your account so it still says that I have multiple copies of the same app to update.
Anyone else have this problem. Oh, btw, Bloomberg crashed this morning while I was using it. So it's still not all that stable.

well 2.0.1 is officially out and it officially SUCKS......I have restored my iphone with the latest itunes and upgraded to 2.0.1 and my contact app is as glitchy and sucky as ever.....apps take their time loading ...usually about 5 seconds but certainly not 'snappy"....this update is garbage....I see no benefit from it so far and My contacts app actually seems to be less responsive than before. I am afraid that the iPhone is woefully underpowered for what Apple is wanting it to do......and before anyone starts saying that my phone is faulty google 2.0.1 and read how many people say they THINK the interface is snappier but could be imagining it......no noticeable difference for me....sorry for ranting but what I enjoyed with 1.1.4 has become an excercize in frustration with the the "app store" firmware....ugh!

Smooth install on my 3G. Took under 20 minutes hands free. I think it rebooted a couple of times.
Seams faster across the board. Synch is much faster as it doesn't look like it's doing synchs to stuff that hasn't changed.
My 1K person contact list seams to load faster from the call menu and I'm not seeing the keyboard lag that I had before but I wouldn't call this definitive.
I hear from a 2G user that the but he had that prevented apps from running is solved in this release.

The update failed on my 3G, said unknown error 1602 and left the phone in recovery mode. Then iTunes said it saw a phone in recovery mode and it needed to be restored. I let it restore, which took about 30 minutes, and then the phone needed to activate.
Next it asked me if I wanted to set it up as a new phone or restore my backup (yes, I had one) so I chose restore my backup, which took 40 MINUTES. My apps lived through it, even BoxOffice which iTunes has pulled, but I have no music and did not have time to resync before leaving for work.
This was not a smooth, happy Apple experience for me. Glad to see that it work smoothly for others.

Worked fine on the first shot, no long backups like others report. Seems a lot quicker when using the keyboard and viewing contacts.
For those having really long backups, how are you connecting your usb cable to your computer? You should be plugging it into one of your BACK slots; that is, one that is directly on your board. If you use a front slot, or secondary slot, you WILL notice considerably less speed and reliability. fyi..

This is why 2.0.1 firmware is ~250MB: It is, in simple terms, basically downloading the entire factory-fresh image of the device -- so that in the event you want to do a restore, you can without any extra downloads.
While theoretically iTunes doesn't need the whole 250MB just to update your device to the new firmware, it will need it if you have to do a restore.

...and the update did nothing for my 3G signal.... Didn't think it would. Looks like this is a hardware issue, as I'd think they'd want to fix that immediately if possible....
Maybe I can plug my iPhone into a Nokia phone for better reception...

What a turd! 3rd so call tech support call to get this brick to work.
Won't restore the back up of your information so if you had anything like say 500 phone contact (each with work, cell & home) 200+ photos, your calendar, todo list (work & home) apps set up and synced, email accounts synced, secure wifi accounts set up with the 128 bit keys typed in, you're pretty much hosed!
And aren't these the guys who have the commercials making fun of Windows crashing???

riddle me this. i'm stuck behind a hospital firewall, so apparently itunes doesn't know what to do with itself. i manually downloaded the .ipsw file from above and put it in it's respective folder. what i didn't know was that itunes needs to still connect to the world wide interwebs to authenticate. i don't think itunes works with proxies does it? i now have an iphone that will only make emergency calls. i will be in a wifi area without a firewall this weekend, but i really need a phone between now and then.
any thoughts? yes, i know, i should have read the manual first. :/
