Ikea To Sell Flatpack Solar Panels Soon?
Posted by John Mahoney at 1:00 AM on August 8, 2008
That's what the Cleantech Group is reporting, based on details of a recent €50 million investment into Ikea's GreenTech fund, used to finance research into consumer solar panels, green building materials, alternative light sources, etc. In the same way that Wal-Mart can basically fart one night and wake up the next morning having changed the face of massive globalised retail, Ikea moving to sell presumably affordable solar gear for everyday users could be a big push to the industry. There's a reason why your Ikea is usually next to a shipping port--these Swedes move serious weight. But the question is, what will they be called? SØLECKK? SUNGLYÄSS? Hit the name generator and let's figure this one out. [Cleantech via CNET]

"...In the same way that Wal-Mart can basically fart one night and wake up the next morning having changed the face of massive globalized retail..."
At least IKEA is doing something for the common good, rather than just fueling the race to the bottom, and contributing to US consumers expectation that products should be cheaper that is realistically good for the economy/environment. (and treating their employees like slaves, etc.)
Although I must continue to fault IKEA for making crap that doesn't last very long spurring further consumption via replacements...

@bpapa9013: I don't let my cats lick my face either. Because when they get bored, they lick each others' asses. Anyone who tells you cats are (a) smart or (b) clean doesn't have cats.
They are, however, excellent entertainment. Few things are funnier than a cat falling off of a bookshelf in the course of chasing its tail. In fact, cats chase their tails better than dogs because it's faster and they yowl when they catch it.

@OMG! Ponies!:
"cats chase their tails better than dogs because it's faster and they yowl when they catch it."
I have to agree even though my cat has a tale to tell but only half a tail to tell it with - so we don't know why he lost the top half of it but we do know he can't catch it.
My Mom's psycho-cat, on the other hand had a long tail which he thought was sneaking up behind him to attack so right out of nowhere he would do a Taz on it. Freaky.
The vet suggested Vallium. My Mom said "Not my poor kitty".
The Vet said, "No, the Vallium is for you and we should "dock" the cat's tail".
Problem solved.

@Gann: Apparently those people don't realize that the panels don't work UNDERGROUND. ;)
Actually, some areas have passed legislation similar to the small satellite dishing indicating that they can't be goverened by an HOA. I would think that any area with those limits would have to reconsider considering how big the green movement is now.

@SQLGuru: Agreed. Nowadays, saying someone isn't "green" is just like saying they were "red" during the Communist scare. Just put up a sign or hand out flyers saying you're trying to reduce your carbon footprint, and the HOA refuse to care about the enviroment and people's children. As much as I hate and laugh at this whole "Green" craze, it does come in handy sometimes.
