iHologram 3D iPhone App Was Just For Show, Not Peek into Alternate World
Posted by Kit Eaton at 1:00 AM on August 26, 2008
The amazingly convincing 3D anamorphosis app iHologram we showed on Friday turns out to be just a technology demonstrator rendering rather than a real app. Its developer, David O'Reilly, apparently wasn't trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes with the cool clip of the strolling cat, but just demonstrate how the 3D effect could be made to work. He's up for collaboration "with a developer or studio who wants to make it happen," for real, though. It might not be too long before someone takes this great idea and programs it, I suspect. So then he is less David O'Reilly and more David O RLY?

I'm sorry, but I can't take him seriously with that appauling misuse of the apostrophe.

My brother does 3D stuff.. I'll ask him how hard it will be to make this. If it's not that hard, I'll knock it out.

Is he offering to develop it Paycheck style, and have his memory wiped?

Can the iPhone actually tell what direction it's rotated when flat? It's not tilting anything so I don't see how this will work.

With all it's bells and whistles Apple didn't bother putting a compass in there?

I don't think the tilt sensors would be applicable to this application. Perhaps, however, you could use the camera in a way similar to a mouse in order to detect movement. Overall, it's a simple concept; display a 3d model and rotate it according to the perspective of the viewer. Not sure what programming on the iPhone(ew...I said it) is like, especially 3d applications, but the real feat hear is actually motion tracking the viewer.

@OMG! Ponies!: LOL
@Player4: From what I know, the iPhone/iPod Touch can't tell wich direction it's rotated in a flat horizontal surface.

@Ceiling_Cat: "appauling"
I sincerely hope that was irony.

I think David O'Reilly *was* trying to pull the wool over our eyes. His introduction text in the original clip clearly states:
"iPhone app using realtime manipulation of anamorphic perspective"
It's a good fake, however!

Someone already implemented the real thing on the iPhone, actually! It's a dice rolling app called Mach Dice. You can tilt the phone to get a peek at the other sides of the dice.

duh. the demo couldn't have been accomplished with the accelerometers with that kind of accuracy. maybe if it had android's integrated compass functionality, then it could do accurate orientation mapping.

it's a cool idea...
the iPhone hardware has potential for cool apps and games, I was thinking today it would be a GREAT platform for the old sierra quest games...
Kings / Police / Space Quest anyone?

@AdmiralQuesadilla: Oh! That "Mach Dice" is pretty nice! I enjoy "MotionX Dice" (a freebie), but "Mach Dice" price of $.99 isn't bad for the ability to have a lot more dice, and, more importantly, *different* kinds of dice!
I wonder if you can have a two-sided die? Sorta like a coin flip...
I wish, too, that you could "park" or "freeze" some dice after rolling.
But, that looks like a nice app for a buck!

@Joseph: fail. O'reilly is a 3d artist and director, he needs someone in iPhone dev to do the scripty codey magics.

Given that this technology already exists, I'm not sure what he thinks he's achieved here. The hard part isn't saying "hey, it'd be neat to do this", it's the execution.

2Skitchin: I doubt you can get refresh rate of the camera good enough to detect movement.
iPhone is using gravity to detect rotation (like my HTC Diamond). When rotating axis is Z, no gravity involved, thus, no detection (

@Player4: It can't. This is why holding it at an angle is important. Probably the only way it could work out which way it is oriented, without support of external hardware, when flat is to build in a compass, but that would be a for a future model.

And here I thought the new supercollider had opened a doorway into my iPhone from the future. If this is not true, then what good is this iPhone?!?
