IE 8 Could Get 'Porn Mode': Would it Change Your Mind About IE?
Posted by Sean Fallon at 10:40 AM on August 20, 2008
What is the best way for IE to gain market share back from Firefox? Porn. That's right--when it comes to the internet, the answer is always porn. You know it, I know it, and apparently Microsoft knows it because there are rumours floating around that they may incorporate a private browsing feature, a.k.a "porn mode," similar to Safari (Firefox pulled the feature from 3.0) that would allow users to thoroughly cover up their smutty tracks from anyone who might be checking their browsing history.
The IE 8 Beta 2 release should be hitting any day now, so we shall see soon enough whether or not this feature made it into the build. But, the question is, would private browsing make IE more appealing to you, or is it a non-issue? [istartedsomething via ZDNet Image via ninamariebarbuto]

If FF3 had this feature already, that w/e. But it doesn't and the existing Porn Mode add-ons are broken last time I checked.
If I had Windows, I'd use IE8 just for-no, forget that, then I'd have to put up with ads/

I was hoping for the *real* "Porn Mode" which automatically download all the pics and video from the porn sites...

It's a catch-22.
IE8 will allow you the secrecy you need to browse the porn sites you want to view.
However, it's also the browser you absolutely don't want to browse porn sites with, because it's the most susceptible to viruses.

If you want to browse pr0n with absolute safety, you have to use something like a knoppix boot disc, on a system with no hard drive (or other writable storage device) in it. When done, unplug (not turn off) the power to the system. Problem solved. IE can go piss up a rope.

Nothing short of something new, amazing, and different would coax me back to IE.
Would you trade in your Camry for an oxcart? The oxcart was great until the automobiles came along.
IE of any ver. needs to be Old Yellered.
I hid Firefox away in a folder on my comp at work after my supervisor kept deleting it.

It's not porn mode.
Porn mode would intelligently identify porn sites, even differentiate between the real thing and parody porn sites with very few false results, and automatically filter them out of your history.
If Microsoft could give us that, my interest would be genuinely piqued. Otherwise, I feel it's a relatively worthless feature.

Would be nice to have a "sandbox" mode where features are disabled but you know if you visit a site, you aren't going to end up with spyware or other stuff being launched from the browser. Maybe that's not possible?

'that would allow users to thoroughly cover up their smutty tracks from anyone who might be checking their browsing history.'
But does it also report anything illegal that might be looked at while in this mode? I could easily seen it been used the wrong way if it can cover up the tracks quite well.
Either way it wouldn't tempt me to use IE after using Firefox and Opera for quite a long time having to use IE really bugs me for not been as quick.

It's a non-issue. I use Firefox. I have two different profiles, one default, and an "extra" one that I keep hidden. No one knows how to access it, (run > firefox.exe -profilemanager), and I have a special easy shortcut to use that profile automatically (thanks Lifehacker!) Also, I always Clear Private Data on that profile after every session, while leaving my real browsing alone.

@rockntrumpet: The thing is the Safari porn setting does not stop info from your system from being xfered to the site like Sandboxie does. THe Safari porn setting clears temp files, history, dls and other client info. So its kinda to different things.
Sandboxie makes it so the web server does not know who you are.
Safari porn makes it so your mom/wife/boyfriend/or anyone else, dose not know you are surfing porn.

Oh yes, it is that time on a Tuesday evening when I type in "porn mode" in the Google Intrawebs and see what lovely ladies await me. The first link sent right back to Gizmodo on this link.
I am pretty sure my wife is behind this somehow.
And, just so I make the 'on topic' gods happy -- I am not interested in any web browser that makes surfing for porn easy. I have always enjoyed the challenge, and have only been caught a half dozen times.

ATTN ALL IT DEPTs: IE8 lets users hide porn use!
Firefox wins browser wars!
Seriously though, if clearing your history won't hide whatever you're doing from your IT dept well enough, then they're probably checking router logs and you're boned anyways.
If you need to hide your porn use from your girlfriend, well, its time to either break it to her and get her involved, or move on.
