Huge Labour Day HDTV Price Drop Coming Up
Posted by John Mahoney at 3:15 AM on August 21, 2008
Just in time for NFL, the World Series and all those delightful new network sitcom premieres, Gary over at HD Guru has caught wind of an across-the-board price drop that will lower prices of 2008 panels by a couple hundred dollars. Tons of Samsung's series 5, 6 and 7 sets will see a drop of US$100-US$200, with Sony, Mitsubishi and Panasonic expected to follow suit by Labour day, so it's probably a good idea to hold your horses on that new set until the prices start to fall, Wal-Mart style. Head over to HD Guru for Samsung's full discounted model list.
AU: Not sure if this will carry across to AU, but might be worth holding off just in case, right?[HD Guru]

Does anyone have any idea on how this will compare to Black Friday deals? Because Thanksgiving is only about 3 months away.

My wedding is in October. We're going to use our gift money for an HDTV, so our buying power just went up! It's too bad more electronics stores don't have Bridal registries.

@Playstation: TVs have been dropping a good bit recently. I picked up an Oelvia from Target for under $700 (42" 1080p LCD). I think there's a lot of downward pressure on prices coming from 1) the desire to start moving in more expensive LED LCDs and 2) items just sitting on shelves as people horde their money.
I'm hoping that means a big Black Friday. There is going to be a lot of product out there competing to get sold.
@lpranal: I don't think the MSRP prices have been going down steadily, but the sales and rebate prices seem to be going lower and lower. Hence, BF could be big.
Of course, I could be completely wrong, and BF will be awful.

Still waiting for evidence of the other two "price drops" in the last few months. Bought an LCD in april and it's still going for more than what i paid for it (instant rebate at CC)

Ugh. I hate being reminded of how many whiny teenagers read this blog. Instead of sitting around reading the internet maybe you should go get a job so you can afford nice things like TV's and hookers.

I just came from Best Buy, and I saw the Samsung LN52A650, which HD Guru says will drop in price from $2999 to $2799, for exactly $2799. Since I was once interested in this TV (I'm now looking for the LN52A750), I looked around for it a while ago, and saw it at Circuit City for $2499. It's higher now, but I wouldn't pay $2799 for it. I'd wait for it to drop to no more than $2300.

I hate when people whine about others whining.
@teenagers:
You heard him - get off of the internet and tend the fields! In my day, we walked 6 miles just for one lousy internet search! And if we whined, 100 lashes! Your generation does nothing but fiddle with the gosh darn intertubes!

Olevia filed bankruptcy.. they still making TVs??
My aunt bought a 42" LG last week for $1000.. was priced $1200 in the store but they have her an on the spot $200 discount. I thought it was a good deal until I seen the link above for the 42" Sylvania at $799.
Now, when you can show me a 52" for under $900 that doesn't cost $100 to ship, I'm buying 3 of them.

Of course, I may go for the Olevia 265TFHD 65-inch LCD HDTV. Just 10 months ago it was $7,000. Sam's has it for $2994 now. Owning 2 Olevia LCD flat screen units right now (both 32"), I would not hesitate whatsoever to buy Olevia again. So tempted..

@njbrideau: Nope, projectors are in their own world. Anyway the 1080p models are already pretty cheap and heavy on the features.
