Huge California Porn Tax Proposal Goes Limp
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 8:40 AM on August 13, 2008
Digital dowloads taxes might be breathing hot and steamy down our necks, but we apparently dodged at least one taxation bullet today: A Ron Jeremy-sized 25 percent tax on adult entertainment in California that would've extended to streamed and downloaded internet porn (you know, if you actually paid for it).
Assemblyman Charles Calderon argued that people who make or watch it should pays for its "harms." Happily, his proposal just died in committee. It does raise an interesting question though, since it could obviously only tax actual transactions: How many of you DO pay for porn? [The Blowfish Blog via Valleywag]

I was attacked by a wild turkey when I worked at a gas station. Everyone was in their cars - no one was pumping gas. Then I saw this crazy, gigantic turkey attacking people when they opened their doors. I corralled it and he pecked me, so I punched it in its face - that bewildered it - then I locked him in a cage.

@the1sen: You sure like to tell that story.
Back on topic:
If "Assemblyman Charles Calderon argued that people who make or watch [porn] should [pay] for its "harms," he should first be required to prove those harms.
On the other hand, the societal harms associated with politicians trying to pass stupid legislation to pander to certain constituents is easy to prove. Because of this guy, time was likely wasted at the capitol that could have been spent debating/making useful laws. Further, time is money -- if he wasted an hour of every assemblyman's day, that's basically money lost from tax-paying citizens. Somebody should tax Calderon's income an extra 25%.

@the1sen: that's the second time you posted that, does anybody see the disenvoeler around? [gizmodo.com]
To everybody else. I call for a jerk tax. It will be a 95% tax. Since Assemblyman Charles Calderon acted as like at his job, he should pay 95% of his income. Maybe these taxes could be used to make obnoxious, irritating, poorly made commercials to sway people from acting like jerks. After all, it works so well for cigarettes.

Calderon proudly represents the cities of Montebello, Pico Rivera, portions of City of Industry, Downey, La Mirada and Whittier. In addition, he also represents the communities of Hacienda Heights, Rowland Heights, South San Gabriel, South San Jose Hills, Valinda and portions of East Los Angeles.
Maybe my Cali geography is off, but doesn't a lot of the porn get made in this guy's neck of the woods?
In any case, express your opinion about Chuckles legislative priorities:

I always pay for porn. I pay approximately 100 MB of used disk space every time. At least I can always refund in the Recycle Bin.
But really, that tax won't hurt anyone. People who pay for porn are stupid. Like the RIAA.

why would porn be charged MORE tax then anything else? Is it hurting any other industry? It's not like it's killing our health.

Yeah, no. I've never paid for porn, and I can't see a scenario where I would. There's so much free porn out there that I almost feel bad about it.
Almost.

How 'bout the committee members didn't feel like paying such a tax. I take it that it was shot down right away.
Seriously, who can't find free porn on the net? Better yet, how can you not find free porn on the internet? Anybody searching Google/Yahoo images with the safe search off knows what I'm talking about.

I say, go ahead and tax it (although 25% is very high). That would legitimize it. Smoking and drinking is taxed, so Uncle Sam says it's OK. Drug use is not taxed because the of the same reason. Tax it and everything is A-OK!
