HP Developing Touchsmart Notebook
Posted by Mark Wilson at 11:15 PM on August 6, 2008
We liked the HP Touchsmart IQ506, the touch-controlled all-in-one PC, not just because it worked well (which it did), but because it was trying something different—not merely copying other products on the market. Now HP has revealed to the Wall Street Journal that they are aiming "to get touch-enabled notebook computers on the market within the next 18 months." Unfortunately, doing some quick calendar math in our heads, we realise that 18 months means 2010. And while we know we'll probably live to see the day, life is but "a walking shadow, a poor player, that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more." (HP didn't tell the WSJ that last part.) [WSJ via Electronista]

HP needs to put more marketing behind the tx2500z.
I love mine. It's such an awesome machine...

As a Mac Fanboy, the one PC company I give most props to (other than the high end NWF and such), would have to be HP. I think they actually try to make the best products and in terms of the Windows based PC's, I'd give them the 1st place position. The fact that they picked up Voodoo PC also provides them with some brilliant designers.

18 months? That's too long. I want my new technology now dammit!

I like HP too. I mean, seriously, it can't cost a PC maker much to add all those extra USB, audio, card reader, and Firewire ports on the front. HP was one of the first to do it, and it's so convenient, and I appreciate them for it.
I also liked the idea of the Personal Media Drives, but it sucks that they cost about 30% more than a comparable drive of another brand.

@jeepingeek: To be honest, I haven't done any 'real' testing with it. I get *about* 3 hours, but I have the larger battery, which sticks out.

@Mio: Out of curiousity what kind of battery life are you getting in that? the only specs i can find are for the older tx2000 that didn't have the new Puma internals. It does seem to be pretty awesome especially for the price.

Awesome. I loved the HP TouchSmart 2. I can't wait to see what the notebooks are like. I just hope they're not bulky.

My local Best Buy has had all but ONE of the new TouchSmart PCs returned. The new unit is only marginally better than the original. The screen surface is awful (feels like it's burning my fingers), and apparently the performance is just as bad. Customers are very unhappy. Not surprising for HP. They have grand ideas, but their application of it is poor, and their software's worse. I'm looking forward to Dell's tablets coming down in price, but I'll be avoiding HP's TouchSmart line.

@jeepingeek: I bought my tx2500 a week ago. I love it. Battery life varies greatly, depending on use. I get between 2-5 hours, depending on whether I'm browsing, painting, or gaming. It still runs kinda hot, and to get 5 hours out of the battery, you have to turn off wifi, bluetouth, the touchscreen, and set the brightness to low. The tx2500 GPU benchmarks 3-4 times better than the tx2000's and can play new games at low spec.
