How To Tether Your iPhone With NetShare
Posted by Matt Hickey at 8:00 PM on August 4, 2008
We've been covering NetShare a lot the last couple of days, and with good reason: Apple consciously left the ability to tether out of the iPhone, yet for some reason has no problem letting someone else sell an app that does just that. Some users, though, might find the concept of tethering confusing, or at least intimidating. It's actually quite straightforward, and the staff at Apple Insider has put together a really handy and detailed step-by-step guide that shows how in just a few minutes you can configure your MacBook (or other Wi-Fi device) to share your iPhone's internet connection so you can have truly mobile access anywhere you get coverage. BTW all the tutorials I have seen didn't mention this. If you are having trouble with the 'using DHCP with manual address' and the subnet mask appearing, just choose 'Manually' from the pulldown instead. This should eliminate the subnet mask and your problem. Also make sure to HIGHLIGHT and check 'socks' under Proxies not just check it.

@Camperton: Do you have an iPhone 3G or OG?

One other thing, after I've set up the network and the phone I've found it's necessary to do a reboot of the phone before the connection will work, every time.

Yep, the app seems to be gone again... I'm using it right now, though, and it works great. Easy to set up and get going.

@Camperton: I was asking because I've noticed some of my friends with 3G's having different experiences than I have with the original iPhone--Could be because I'm on a development firmware version though.
I'm just counting down the time until Apple revokes NetShare's development certificate. The unlocked iPhone is really the ultimate mobile device, but under Apple's sovereignty it falls short on so many levels though.

That's the nice thing about torrents. Even when the app's gone, it's still around.

@Joseph:
How do you suppose Apple will justify pulling their development certificate after they themselves passed and posted the app in the store?
This sets a bad precedent if they make a habit of stonewalling useful apps for self serving reasons. Especially since they are actively trying to court enterprise users. What about people who aren't casual users, and aren't enterprise? Say power users. What they need from the device may fall through the cracks.
Curious to see how this plays out.

Awesome conversation, but...
I actually managed to snag the app from work through the phone itself, (iTunes won't let me sync it back over to my computer now, which sucks) so I have this wonderful program. Problem is, there seems to be nothing on how to get this working with Windows (Vista), or at least nothing helpful.
I had it going for a few minutes, but firefox would just keep downloading blank files...

@Camperton: They wont pull the main Development Certificate, the will revoke the Developers (NullRivers) Application (NetShare) certificate. All they have to say is that NullRiver violated some term or condition which should be grounds for development revocation. The whole structure is setup using a trust chain so every Application in the app store has its own unique digital certificate. Apple has the power to revoke a certificate which will render the software unusable on the next firmware update.
Here is my ghetto fabulous drawing.

This is the whole reason for jail breaking. When you jail break your phone, it removes the check that Apples Development Certificate does to check of the software is legit or not so anything can be installed.

I really do hope they are just pulling it temporarily while they concoct some kind of disclaimer/warning for the app.

@SuchiBatakas:
Well in Canada it is allowed under the terms of service (of the 6 gig plan at least) and what about AT&T customers who are willing to pay for tethering... now they have no software solution. If Apple is gonna babysit every app to this extent it's gonna be a bumpy ride for developers and users of the "service".

@Camperton While I agree that it would be great to have an app like this, it's against the terms of service for AT&T. They are not stonewalling any apps for self serving reasons rather they are complying with an agreement they most likely have with AT&T. The real question is how did this app get through at all in the first place.

Thanks! It is ghetto fabulous. : )
Let's hope this ridiculous debacle doesn't f-up Nullriver too much. In my experience they're a good company who's software I like quite a bit.

I downloaded this app while it was still available via my iPhone. I haven't synced to iTunes since. So your telling me that it won't sync this app back into iTunes? In other words, I cannot make a backup of this app? So when they release the next firmware, I will lose this app? This is messed up. Apple is going to have to issue a statement on this because I will be demanding my 9.99 back if this app disappears from my iPhone because there is no way to back it up or re-download.

So jailbreaking is the only way to go to get this app now? I couldn't actually find a torrent for it searching briefly.

Shout out to Daniel Smith!
First download Safari for Windows from apple.com. Then follow these instructions:
You have to create an AdHoc network in Vista by
1. clicking the network icon in the taskbar and choose connect or disconnect.
2. click "setup a connection or network" and choose "setup a wireless ad-hoc network" name the network and add security if you want click the save network box and hit next then click close after network is created. Vista should automatically connected to this new network.
3.Open "Network and Sharing Center" and choose manage wireless networks and then click adapter properties.
4. Click Internet Protocol Version 4 and choose properties then choose "use the following IP address" and enter in 192.168.10.2 and make sure your subnet is 255.255.255.0, that's it leave everything else empty. Save your changes.
5. Open the Control Panel and choose internet options, chose the connections tab and select LAN. Then hit the advanced button under proxies. In the SOCKS field type in 192.168.10.1 (which will be the IP of your iPhone)and for port # choose 1080 and save your changes.
Your PC is now setup, next setup the iPhone.
6. open setting and choose Wi-fi on the iPhone and it should see your newly created network enter password if you set one. Choose it and hit the blue arrow icon.
7. Choose static and in the IP address field enter 192.168.10.1 and make sure the subnet is 255.255.255.0. You may also want to disable auto-lock on the iPhone cause that will close out the program after a set amount of time.
8. Hit the Home button and open netshare.
9. Then for the bad part, open SAFARI (even on Vista it only works on SAFARI) and you can surf the net.
again of steps 4 and 5 i changed the ip address to 192.168.8.2 and 192.186.8.1 and don't know if you will have to do this.

Here is a link I found last night that worked for me that you will have to copy/paste for a guide on how to get netshare to work with vista. www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1410702. steps 4 and 5 say to use 192.168.10.2 and 192.168.10.1 but when i opened netshare it gave me an ip address of 192.168.8.1. so i went back and changed everything to end in either 8.2 or 8.1. you do need to use safari.

For those of us still on Tiger (netshare and apple insider's instructions assume everyone's using leopard) who have been trying for hours to get this thing to work and can't, it's because the instructions are a leeeeeetle bit different for us. Camperton is right above when he says use "Manually" instead of "Using DHCP with Manual Address" and there are a couple more steps that need to be taken. Instead of outlining it all here though, here's a link to perfect instructions on the Apple support discussion forums:

I knew that this app had been removed, but iTunes never said why it was unavailable... until today. "Your request could not be completed. The item you've requested is not currently available in the US store."
So there you have it, AT&T was able to have the app pulled in the US.
W T F is wrong with the country? ? ? Why do we continue to let big business control everything we do?
REVOLT!!

also, has anyone successfully made this work with firefox? diff sites and blogs say to set firefox up to use a SOCKSv5 proxy with the ip addy you specified in network settings but it still doesn't work with anything but safari for me. i have not looked into using ichat and adium with it yet. i'd prefer to keep firefox as my default browser even if i rarely will need to tether my macbook.

This Apple Insider walkthrough is good, love the screenshots, but for those of us still running Tiger, it's a little bit different. Netshare and Apple Insider's instructions are assuming we're all using Leopard. If you've spent hours trying to ake this work, don't fret, I'm linking to new instructions. Like Camperton said above, you do use "Manualy" instead of "Using DCHP with manual address" and there are a couple more steps that aren't included in the Apple Insider version too.

@AlD: then why was i running it through firefox, right? safari is not a requirement.
@tatiana.noel: yes, that's what i was using. use foxyproxy and follow directions here: [64.233.167.104] ... the only trick is that once you're connected you may have to open up safari on the iphone and hit any page first to get the iphone to realize that it should still be using the 3G connection for inbound data and the wifi for routing the data.

Why do phone manufacturers make this so complicated? I know a lot of people with a wide variety of phones that are able to use their phone in this way, but it is never straight-forward to do so.
