Funai (Sylvania, Symphonic and Emerson) Will Sell HDTVs With Blu-rays In 'Em
Posted by Jason Chen at 5:20 AM on August 14, 2008
Funai, whose subsidiaries are more familiar to us as Sylvania, Symphonic and Emerson, is planning on selling LCD HDTVs with Blu-rays on-board starting summer 2009. The company's previous successes in recent years with combo units (TVs with VCRs and TVs with DVDs) totalled up 40% and 20% of their sales in the US respectively. So how much will this low-end brand charge you for the all-in-one experience? CrunchGear says the target price for a 42-inch will be between US$1100 and US$1300. Keep in mind that's a price for something launching a year from now. [CrunchGear]
Update: Funai also took over the Phlips TV brand in the US, which means you might be seeing this under their name as well.

I see the blu-ray portion of this TV being obsolete years ahead of the TV requiring an upgrade.
Read: don't buy crap built in.

The pluralization of Blu-Ray does not require an apostrophe.

This is SUCH A HORRIBLE idea. So you include a $10 DVD ($25 to consumer) player in your past TVs. Big deal. It stops working and who cares?
Unless this player can be REMOVED by the consumer for replacement, this idea will BLOW.

@JEmlay: I agree, one part more than likely will fail at some point... Which leaves you with a TV without a BD player or a BD player that is useless. It honestly makes a lot more sense to spend a little extra and buy them separately, but historically, that's not really how the American public sees is... so I bet they sell a ton of these.

That's a shame, where I work, an older couple mentioned Philips being bought by another manufacturer, and being that Philips themselves weren't making any new models for the North American market, it was feasible, but I looked at them like they were crazy and I had heard no such nonsense, sorry random elderly couple, you were right.
Also, I warn everyone about the dangers of built-in anything on TVs, if it craps out, you're sitting with a damaged or non-existing TV for at least a few weeks. Buy a cheapo, the premium they charge for a built-in is insane.
