Full-Size Cardboard Aston Martin for Papier-Mâché Bonds
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 1:45 PM on August 2, 2008
This Ashton Martin DB5 is a full-sized, almost-perfect reproduction of the original Bond car--down to the front-blinkers machine guns and Ben-Hurish wheels' blades--built using only cardboard and glue. It has no supporting structure, neither metal nor wood. Her Majesty's cardboard spy car was built by Chris Gilmour, who has a tendency to convert everything in 1:1 scale cardboard models, from bikes to giant strong boxes to dragsters to dentist chairs, grand pianos, and portable typewriters:
Gilmour has imposed a strict logic on his works he makes objects using only cardboard and glue. There is no supporting structure, no wooden or metal frame. His interpretations of everyday objects are created in adherence to the use of a pure and single material, but instead of the marble or bronze of classical statues, he has chosen one of the most humble and commonly found of our industrial times.
It's true: the detail and fidelity are amazing. Too bad cardboard is not rain proof, like marbel and bronze. On the positive side, knowing that Bond is a noted Dry Martini addict who crashes every single vehicle he gets his hands on, giving him a cardboard car to fight against a cardboard SPECTRE is not a bad thing at all.

Papercraft just took a step up, wonder when someone takes it further and tries to make one of them Gundam robots out of cardboard at 1:1 scale.

Rather then ask if it would blend, I'm just gonna say it would and make an observation. Why spend so many hard hours sculpting paper only to make it into a dentist chair? Why?
That's like sending a man to the moon just to take a dump and come home...

This is extreme talent, and good thinking on the part of the artist.
I mean look at the size of the machine you would need to make an Astin Martin into the shape of a cardboard box!
This is WAY more efficient, and less wasteful!
However, in an effort to use MORE resources, HP has commissioned these works to be used for sending documentation and very small items to their customers!
So you can see the dilemma.

@Duckspwn: To play Devil's Advocate here, I hope you realize that here, on the internet, stupid commenting has no real lasting repercussions other than being banned. If you know of any other repercussions that may result from making an inane comment on a gadget-blog, please elucidate them.
The internet is a messy place filled with typos, factual errors, and abrasive personalities. Accept it rather than forcing others to adapt to your own preferences.

@CYST!: How about "I'm just saying, but..." People seems to think that phrase excuses them from any repercussions that occur as a result of them proving their stupidity through some Dbag observation they are about to make.
The attention to detail on these models is absolutely amazing. Personally, I would like to see a 1:1 scale of a F-22, a F-35, and an Apache, cause that would be the epitome of badass. I mean, who can say they own a perfect, to scale cardboard Apache? =D

@dambo29: Hey, if you're going to point out typos, let's get them all- "Aston" not "Ashton", "marble" not "marbel". Seriously, Jesus, Gizmodo's own spell check in this comment caught those two.
And I'm not making excuses. It bugs me when commenters use bad grammar or spelling, but it's inexcusable from people who are paid to write.

Goes nicely with an Ashton Marin.

Sorry for the off topic but I'm getting a strange error on your site when I use IE7. This is happening on two different computers so I'm not sure if its just the way I have them set up or not. Gizmodo will load and then IE pops up saying that the site cant be loaded and I get taken to the default page can not be loaded page.
