Feet On: Nike's Hyperdunk 2015 Sneakers Bring Me Back to the Future
Posted by Brian Lam at 6:54 AM on August 2, 2008
Nike's limited edition 2015 variant of the Hyperdunk Supremes just got here. The sneakers aren't just pretty — they're incredibly light for a high top at 370 grams. The translucent rubberised upper has threads running through it at a crosspattern. Nike calls it Flywire tech, but I also recognise the idea from professional sailboat race sails, which run kevlar through the material to give it resistance to stretching and tearing, as well as more tensile strength. The sole has a sliver of carbon fibre running through it, too. Then the super nerdy and awesome Back to the Future references begin.
The box itself has 2015 on its side, and the slide out inner chamber is patterned like Marty's hoverboard. The wrapping paper inside has the words "great scott!" on them. And the sneakers come with hoverboard pink laces with blue tips.
The sneakers themselves are standard hyperdunks with a few notable differences. The Nike logo on the back is the same font and colour as the sneakers in BTTF2. The grey sides of the soles have blue paint specs on them, as in the movie. The uppers have triangular loops, deemphasised versions of the ultra high tops on the movie version. The lateral edge of the shoe is glow in the dark. The midsole has a pink and green hoverboard design, and if you lift it out, there's a flux capacitor logo underneath it on the heel. The tongue of the shoe has orange/red Back to the Future arrows, and three dates and times as they might appear on the Flux capacitor's controller: November 12 (the day the clock was struck by lightning), and two October days, partially obscured by a graphic.
They're Nike, so they're comfortable. I make no claims to their performance, but if they're good enough for Kobe Bryant, I suppose they'll work for blogging.
Michael Maloof of the McFly 2015 project had Nike send these to me for review because of the shared love we have for seeing these sneakers produced. They may not have power laces or electroluminescent Nike logos on them, but maybe that'll come in version 2.

lack of power laces is the biggest problem here... surely there has to be an elegant solution, even if it's not electric in nature. anyone have ideas on how to do power laces mechanically?

@nutbastard: I think we should further deconstruct the failure of his comment, cause if you have to say "because of the Parkinsons" then the line didn't work.
Now, if we take that part out, we are left with:
"Too bad Michael won't be able to get his feet into these shoes."
Which implies that he has some kind of foot condition or some kind of elephantiasis, which he clearly doesn't have. It's nonsense. Therefore, we can cut it out, and the only joke left is..."Michael J. Fox has Parkinsons." This isn't funny at all. It's just mean.
Now compare this to a recent, equally offensive, MJF comment I made on the "blurry, shaky-cam leaked photo of the PSP 3000" post.
While perhaps still mean and disgusting, note that at no point do I actually explain the line. That is left to the reader to draw from the reference. The "work" that you have to do to make the connection is what makes it "clever." (And I use that term loosely.) But it still makes sense, even though the post itself has nothing to do with Back to the Future. And now you know.
(What you now know is mostly that I am a douchebag, but still you know.)

Couldn't they just add some little vertically arranged motors to each side of the heel that would wind up the laces when you apply enough pressure to a sensor underneath the heal? Then release the lock with the green button on that fat strap over the front? It seems so easy, coming from somebody with no engineering experience whatsoever.
I mean, the batteries would wear out in a month, unless they could somehow recharge them when you walk, but so would the novelty of the shoes anyway. Not to say I wouldn't still buy them.

@nutbastard:
By promoting child labor, and thus creating demand for it, they're undermining education of those children and robbing them of their very precious childhood. If child labor is deeply entrenched enough, it further creates a demand for large families, and children can become a significant source of income.
And what of the children? They're going nowhere. No education, no future, nothing. It's not so cut-and-dry as "oh, they'll make money and work their way out of their current predicament." Child labor is designed to keep them down, and it's designed to ensure cheap labor for years to come. Someone fresh out of high school in today's world has little hope for a future without a college education; imaging no middle school at all. What kind of future do those kids have?
As for your comment on human history, let's subjugate women and foreigners, let's wage war against whoever we like for gold and glory, sacking, raping, and pillaging our neighboring lands, and open up conquered lands for hunting the exotic wildlife to extinction, and hell, why not start up the old trade of sugar, spice, and slaves? Yep, screw the changing times, for those were the good old days. Hell, if they're eight years old and ready to do something productive, let's force them into marriage while we're at it. After all, it was historically acceptable.

@DisposableInterloper: quick history lesson.
You do realize that the american school calendar is based on the harvest/planting calendar. The reason our kids get summers off are based solely upon the fact that they were REQUIRED to go and harvest in the fields during the "SUMMER BREAK" and return to school post LABOR DAY.... man education can do WONDERS. So yes, child labor is a part of EVERY SOCIETY.
It wouldn't hurt to have some of these puss-a-fied generations of entitlement whores to actually WORK a summer or 2 to actually reap a harvest that they have sown...stop looking to the GUB'MENT to help you out. And we wonder why our children have the work ethic of sloths.
No offense to the sloths
An education isn't how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know. It's being able to differentiate between what you do know and what you don't.

@Cordfucious v 2.0:
Oh yes, I do know the history of the school calendar quite well. Indeed, I'm a proponent of getting rid of the summer vacation, while injecting a bit of extra vacation time throughout the rest of the year to keep kids from burning out. Too much time is spent getting students back in the rhythm of school and refreshing what they learned the previous year. I think it'd be better to keep students in school year round.
As I've said, times change. You'll find vestiges of all sorts of archaic bullshit in any society's culture. That doesn't mean they're at all applicable to the demands and flow of today's world.
As for education, it's very much gaining a wide body of knowledge. What most people forget, however, is that it's also about developing the skills to adapt and apply that knowledge wherever it may be useful. I frankly disagree that it's a matter of differentiating "between what you do know and what you don't," as you put it, because by that reasoning, some random dumbfuck that understands how little he or she knows would be better educated than a jack of all trade that's yet to get a feel for his limits.

Wisdom is a nebulous concept that old people seem to ramble on about indefinitely, as if it's some kind of elite asset that only they have.
The cornerstones of education, such as skill, knowledge, and experience, are a good deal more tangible, and those are something that can be honed indefinitely.

No power laces makes it less attractive.
It's not like the technology isn't possible these days. And in 6 years I can see it being even more possible.
Let's look at the technology aspect. You need a servo motor that's small enough to fit without being unweildy and the laces need to be self contained and connected. The power source needs to be renewable so you're not replacing batteries all the time. (Can someone say recharging dock for your shoes?) Plus you can't forget the blue LED Nike logo on the front. And make the power supply waterproof because we'll need it.
The McFly2015 campaign looks to be working though. Keep it up and we might just get our Power Laced Nike's. But please, when you do release them, for god's sake, DON'T MAKE THEM LIMITED EDITION! I want to walk into a PayLess and buy a pair! Not go on eBay and pay an assload! We may not get hover cars, but let's at least get some cool shoes.
