this cannot be real. Think of Steve Jobs, he would never let something this hideous be seen by the public. Design is everything to him. When designing the Apple II, he would have a hissy fit over the curve on the back of the box not being right. I highly doubt that he would allow such an ugly device to be let out. The Gen 2 iPod Nano is still by far the best one. I hate the current razor edge square one they have now. It is difficult to hold and aesthetically unpleasant.

If this new form factor turns out to be true (kind of bullshit Apple, to change the shape each generation to fuck with people's accessories), at least it's a step back in the right direction.

@chrstphr: Totally agreed. I think this thing is far better looking than the fat little stubby thing we have now. The bigger wide screen will actually make people want to watch video's on their nano!

I mean when the fat one was introduced, and everyone was like "OMG IT PLAYS VIDEO!", my reaction was simply, "and...?".

All i do is autocad. If you look on the picture to the right there's the 3D coordinate x/y/z axis at 0. I very highly doubt someone would get autocad pictures of the next model. Any novice could create this model using Inventor or Solid Works in 20 minutes.

Also, i'd like to second the notion of BS on inserting a GPS device in an ipod nano. While they're at it, they might as well throw in an air conditioner, and a fold-out toaster.

@Noobs-R-Us: It's possible that Apple will revamp the operating system again to have a more iPhone-ish menu that works with the clickwheel (probably not the widget home menu though). The biggest drawbacks would be more lag, like the classic, and likely incompatiblity with the iPod games, yet again.

@Noobs-R-Us: unless they put in accelorometer in it. then just flip it on its side. but i do see what your saying with the menu it would look very odd. then again, i dont like the new half screen menu system. i think it would be cool if they used the same concept but put the graphice as the background and have the text in the front...

Another reason this can't work is because the way that the menu system works now. With cover previews flowing on the right side of the menu. If you have a portrait screen instead of landscape there won't be room for that. They would have to go back to the OLD non-graphical menu system which is a step backwards. I believe Steve Jobs is forward looking, not backwards.

well it wouldnt be hard to mock up a fake case. the people are chinese for gods sake, they can make a knock off ford in under 24 hours. this is easy. (for all the anti-racist jokes haters out there, suck it. it was a joke. move on.)

anyway i am hoping the ipod nano from yesterday is the real one. i think it looks cool. and being that the tall and thin design of this ipod nano CAME from the first and second gen ipod nanos, and the landscape video-viewing derived from the iphone, im not seeing how people are saying its copying from the zune. unfortunately i dont think this is the real deal because in the his keynote last year, steve jobs said they wanted to get rid of the plastic caps on the top and bottom of the second gen nano.

and as far as the whole 'product transition' thing everyone was talking about a couple weeks ago, i think they will announce a TV...iTV! lol and have AppleTV built in since that isnt doing great on its own.

at this event though, the most i can think of them doing is redesigning the nano with the same prices but new sizes.

maybe new sizes and prices for the classic and shuffle,

definitely new prices for the touch and probably dropping the 8gb and lowering the 16 and 32 to $199 and $299. MAYBE they will put GPS and/or speakers. MAYBE. and hey they might do a video service...who knows! The iTunes Wi-Fi Video Store. they havent done a "one more thing" in a while..

Im sorry that this is even considered for being real, if you look at the other pics on engadget you can see these cases have a mini usb slot and a lanyard hook. I have a nano knockoff from ebay for $30 that is built exactly the way this looks.
Ipods would never have a lanyard hook or use mini usb on anything but the shuffle.
Also I know apple would not go backwards in "innovation" they would improve upon the current gen not the previous
