Exploding Billboard Advertises by Destroying Advertisement
Posted by Mark Wilson at 11:30 PM on August 4, 2008
Way back in the days of 2007, courier company Deadline Express treated their New Zealand patrons to a particularly evocative printed advertisement. It was a US$14,000 billboard that featured a timer counting down to when it would blow up, proving "when Deadline Couriers gives you a time, they actually mean it." We can't speak for the service, but the explosions were spectacular in video:
What you should take from this demonstration: upon timely delivery of your package, the Deadline Courier will yank a special cord and explode all over the client's doorstep. [via Inventorspot and adsoftheworld]

I don't know if I'd want to trust my packages to a courier known for blowing this up on delivery.

Combo of the countdown and the 'splosion reminds me of Back to the Future!

So I'm wondering if they had the explosives wired to the board the whole time, or if they just went and installed them like the day of the explosion or something. Cause that could be dangerous having them there the whole time. Some could have stolen them or caused some serious mischief.

They need to post those billboard at the airport, right next to the TSA offices. They need to be a little more tense than they already are... the slackers.

@twilight-arc: As long as it explodes, it's OK. They only get twitchy about things that light up.

I tried this once... the only difference was instead of an advertisement it was a bank. Basically the same thing though.

This would only make sense if someone actually went along and blew the thing up as soon as it got to 0. Instead, it's all automated, which I'm certain their delivery company is not.

I'm amazed there wasn't an accident on the road - cars are going by pretty fast, and if I saw that right in front of me at 65 mph I'd probably crap my pants.

cool... but
it's pretty clear that the led counter, obviously the most expensive part of this billboard.....wasn't damaged by the 'fireworks'.

Quite an amusing advertisement, I know it'd never work out here, though. Had to laugh at that guy going "hey hey!" in the background. Of course the LED wasn't damaged at all, but it was a nice touch to make it glitch up like that.

@michaelleung: They weren't very big "explosions" - they're more of the small fireworks kind. They look impressive without actually damaging much - you can see in the first video that the billboard itself wasn't damaged other than falling off its hook (and that could be staged itself). The display is encased in metal to protect against the weather and such, and lightweight firecrackers would barely even make a mark.
