Downgrading to iTunes 7.7 Fixes iPhone App Crashes (And Steve Speaks Again)
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 8:45 AM on August 21, 2008
Ars has the first solution we've heard for the app-crashing problem bad enough Steve himself said Apple was working on it. Tests by Jaime Hosticka, who used to work for Apple, show that downgrading to iTunes 7.7 fixes the crashies for some people. He also got a more detailed email response from Steve Jobs--six whole sentences--about the issue.
"We do know of several bugs that we're working on for release in a month or two. I would imagine these will fix your issues. Don't worry, this will get resolved soon."
(Ars didn't publish the full email.) Apple has actually contacted him since the Stevemail to get all of his test notes.
In the meantime, if you're on a Mac and having problems, there are some hosts of iTunes 7.7 for Mac in this Apple Support thread started by Hosticka. (If you've got extra sources for 7.7 for Mac and Windows that can handle a pounding, please spill in the comments.) After deleting iTunes 7.7.1 and installing 7.7, you've gotta reset and re-sync your phone. Addtionally, Hostcka recommends deleting this files to be sure they get rewritten:
•/System/Library/Extensions/AppleMobileDevice.kext
•/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DeviceLink.framework
•/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework
•/Library/Receipts/AppleMobileDeviceSupport.pkg
Let us know how it goes. [Ars]

Everything is working fine for me. Maybe a silly app game will crash. Just restart the iPhone and all is well again. Some of these apps are just memory leaks happy.

iTunes 7.7 has been a buggy release from the outset. For example, it won't stay closed. Exit the program, wait a minute or so, often less, and it'll open itself back up again. This may only happen once, or it may happen a dozen times, until you finally give up and leave it running.
Steve, fix iTunes!!! FAST!!!

Ya know...these iPhone issues are quickly determining what device will replace my aging 8525. Either going for the Tilt or waiting on the Touch Pro.
WM benefits over iPhone:
1. Can get apps w/o the store...and w/o jailbreaking the phone.
2. Has far more apps to choose from.
3. Can be tethered to your laptop for internet (over the data network...not the voice network as a modem.)
4. Has a freaking Slingbox client! (iPhone version still in development)
5. Has separate QWERTY keyboard.
6. Finally, is based on a mature platform!
7. Oh yeah...No Apple Kill Switch!
I can't believe I was considering changing to an iPhone. Maybe the 4th gen iPhone will be ready for prime time. The 2nd gen one certainly isn't.

@smegz:
Having used several WM phones, I still prefer the iPhone by a long shot. No version of WM has ever been more stable than the iPhone(Not necessarily less stable, but you know WM has it's fair share of lockups and malfunctions.) So I'm not sure what you mean by mature, maybe rotten? I do admit, I jailbreak my phone. It's really no different from a Windows Mobile user editing the registry or installing system customization utilities on WM. So on top of having every feature of WM, it does them all better. I'll grant that a separate keyboard is a personal preference. Frankly I prefer a phone that is both thinner AND has a much larger screen than any querty phone. So there.

Downgrading to 7.7 didn't work but moving to 7.7 on a fairly clean iTunes library did. I'm convinced it's something to do with iTunes and reverting/cleaning iTunes is the way to go.

@sonicwinder: Sorry, but your fanboi is showing: Jailbreaking your iPhone is totally different than editing the registry. The registry edits and utility installs don't involve voiding support for your device, or risking bricking it entirely. On a base WinMob device you can get much closer to the metal if you so desire, while there is no way you're doing that on a base (non jailbroken) iPhone. Can you access the filesystem? How about granular control of running processes? How about just being able to shut down a single errant app? No? How about that there is much crashiness in the Apple-produced apps, not just the 3rd party ones? Everyone complains that it's "convoluted" to do in WinMob, but at least you can do it. My old HTC 6700 is much more stable than my iPhone, even though the iPhone is vanilla, and the 6700 has been somewhat hacked. I totally love the iPhone, but I'm not going to be self-delusioned that it's a perfect device....

I realize that people have had issues with the iPhone and app crashing and 3g reception. Luckily mine has worked great. The only app crashing that has occured for me is Safari and it only does that when I make it angry. Hopefully all the issues get worked out. Lots of negative press for the iPhone right now.

This is complete BS. I've had the app crash problem for quite some time now, and I'm only using 2.0.0 with iTunes 7.7.
Other than the apps crashing, my iPhone won't transfer new programs from iTunes along with similar problems.
So yeah... that sucks...

Why would you have to do any of that on any phone (or an iphone)? I dont even know what apps crash (I mean, safari locks up once in a while, but hey, its a phone).
What mission critical apps does WM6 have the iphone doesnt? Don't mention email security or something, since I know it doesnt play nice with all that yet. (I am being serious here, not trying to be sarcastic fanboy or something)
basically, I use mine for work/life and havent had a single problem nor app I wish I had since the app store came out, and I'm just curious as to what other people consider problems..I mean, cut and paste or video never decided my workday.

@Mandatory_Field, JEmlay:
Actually, Jailbreaking doesn't void your warranty. Unlocking voids your warranty. The two are completely different.
With Jailbreaking, the iPhone is better and more stable than my WM device. Without Jailbreaking, it's just more stable. The only apps I miss are the Microsoft ones like the mobile Office applications and Reader, which was a perfect eBook reader (if you ignore all the bugs and crashes). Other than that, my iPod Touch has completely taken its place, and then some. Installing programs is easier, I can browse the filesystem, ssh over wifi, sftp over wifi, VNC, use it as a customizable trackpad for my computer, access my computer's webcam, stream my entire music library from my computer, control my computer's music player, etc. All for free, and much more efficiently and quickly than on my WM device.
It's not fanboi-ism. I've got both devices, I like both devices. I have taken both of them to their extreme limits. I like the iThing better. Simple as that.

well I have had my 3g phone since it was release and experienced my very first problems with it. While updating an app, specifically box office I had my first crash(continuous apple logo) which is fixed by doing the holding home and sleep button, then hold home and plug into itunes. Then I did the restore and downgraded to itunes 7.7. Then I again it crashed again. Sigh I wish they'd hurry up and fix this problem.

I didn't say warranty. If ATT finds unauthorized apps on your phone, they will terminate support.
As for your experience with other devices, I support MANY handheld devices and my findings are the complete opposite of yours. "Simple as that."

Since it takes TWO HOURS and FORTY MINUTES to perform a restore that you have to do TWO OR THREE times just to get the phone to work from ONE LOCKUP....yeah, I'm down quit often.

@JEmlay: AT&T has nothing to do with the apps that run on your phone, nor are they support for the phone. Support of the device is done through Apple. Support for the service is done through AT&T. Apple would only refuse support if the device was unlocked because it violates their contract with AT&T. Jailbreaking, from personal experience, does not violate the warranty and they will service a jailbroken device.
Maybe it's different on the iPod Touch, but my restores definitely do not take 2:45 hours, and my device has nine full pages of apps. And when I restore (which I have only ever had to do to jailbreak), I restore only once, and it works. Perhaps your specific handset is faulty, or maybe the new iPhones aren't as good as the old iPod Touches.
@smackswell: I rarely have an app crash, and when I do, a reboot usually fixes the problem. And I have pretty much every form of app: both free and paid through the app store, apps from cydia, apps from installer, and cracked pay apps (shh, don't tell anyone). Since the 2.0.1 update, I rarely have any problems.

I think LG and Nokia and all the other cell phone manufacturers should get together and do a series of parody ads in the style of the Hodgemen/Long ads. You could have one actor say "Hi, I'm an iPhone" and the other one coud say "and I'm EVERY SINGLE OTHER PHONE ON THE PLANET" and then the iPhone actor could grab his chest in pain and fall to the floor.
Maybe iPhone could be played by Amy Winehouse...

I don't understand how downgrading iTunes would have any effect on the iPhone - it's not like the two communicate in any way when the phone's not cabled to the PC. This sounds like hooey to me.
Oh, and count me among those people increasingly frustrated with the bugs and crashes. My 3G seems awfully wonky for someone living in the middle of New York, apps on my phone crash all the time, and my phone has crashed a couple of times as well. It seems worse since the last update.

My iPhone 3G hasn't been problem free, but overall it is stable, doesn't drop calls, and doesn't experience the rash of app crashing others report.
What caught my eye in this post was that the Jobs letter said it would be fixed in a month or two. On the one hand, a month or two is not very long, but then it dawned on me that many people (myself included) tend to upgrade their phone, even great ones like the iPhone, once a year or so (gotta have the latest/greatest). With that in mind, given problems by some for the last month, and another two months forecast to fix, that means that 25% of the phone's lifetime will have been in a trouble state. I can see where many would find that to be NOT acceptable.

Well, it looks like the iTunes was the culprit. I was up till 3 in the morning reinstall iTunes 7.7, resetting the iPhone, and installing apps. It's been running fine for 12 hours. Although several applications crashed during the launch, all my iTunes contents were untouched. I hope I don't have to restore my iphone ever again.

I have an App Store application crashing problem fix posted over at http://www.helpmeswitch.com (including
video). This fix seems to last several days, only takes a few minutes
to do from your device, and does not require a restore or iTunes
syncing. I have confirmed that it works on 2.0, 2.0.1, and now the
2.0.2 frameworks. Submitted the details to Gizmodo, Engadget and Digg,
but nobody seemed to care...
My simple approach is a heck of a lot easier and faster than what this

@VirreVojj:
it's not just the apps crashing. that unfortunately happens all the time.
the complete set of symptoms fixed by the downgrade are:
non-apple apps fail to launch, and all media disappears form reference in the ipod application (even though it is there). it's when those two things show up together that you know you're likely in for a D-Grade.

it's not just that apps crash. that's one part of a bigger syndrome. the complete syndrome is that all non-apple app-store apps FAIL TO LAUNCH (not just crash), and that media that is definitely on your phone does not appear in the ipod application. this problem is made up of those two features.
apps crashing on their own may or may not be repairable according to the downgrade. but those two things together definitely are.
