Canon EOS 50D Leaks on Canon China Site
Posted by Kit Eaton at 6:19 PM on August 22, 2008
It looks like data on the upcoming Canon EOS 50D DSLR has been leaked onto the web, by Canon itself. Details appeared briefly on Canon's China site, although the link now is disabled, and gave an insight into what specs the beast will have. They're pretty decent: it's a 15.1-megapixel camera (with standard 1.6x CMOS sensor factor) with a 9-segment AF/AE sensor array, 95% view viewfinder and shoots at ISO 100 to 3200, with an "expansion" to 6400 and 12800. There's also face recognition auto focus, 6.3 frames-per-second high-speed shooting, and 14-bit image processing by the Digic 4 processor. Interestingly it'll have an HDMI output too. Obviously we'll have to wait for a proper release to know more—including data on prices and release dates. [Canon.cn via NeutralDay.com Thanks, Patrick!]

Cmon canon, i want something similar to Nikon's D700! Not just another xxD model, just like nokia does cellphones. Don't just add two or three minor improvements and release the camera..

Wow, this sounds pretty unimpressive. Don't see any reason to upgrade the ol' 40D.

Does anyone have a link to a screencap of the original Chinese page?

The LCD screen is also a 3" with 920,000 pixels.
Also apparently built-in IS, which seems odd.

I just got the 40D with a cashback offer. I'm not regretting it at all.
I'm sure the 50D will be a fine camera, but I can't see any revolutionary new features like changes to the body that we saw when Canon introduced the 40D after the 30D. The expanded ISO is nice, but I wonder how usable that actually is. If you're doing the kind of photography that needs higher sensitivity than 3200, you should be investing in fast lenses.

Oops never mind the built-in IS, Google translates it as In Camera IS, but it's meant to be in-lens IS.

I held off upgrading my old 10D until I saw a real significant upgrade to it which was the 40D. Now this? I'm still pretty damned happy with my 40D thank you very much. Now, that Nikon D700 does look interesting...if only Canon and Nikon glass were compatible. Oh well.

@Spoondizzle: Yeah, I agree. I noticed in a recent Best Buy flyer that it dropped $200, which I'm sure is the first of multiple price breaks.

I'm actually happy for this, that means that the 40D will actually be justifiable in a few months and 30Ds (which you can still find new in box if you look) will be more or less free.

Does this mean that, should I drop and break my 40D, which I purchased in Best Buy last year, with a replacement warranty (not repair but replacement), Best Buy would have to give me a 50D if the 40D is not available anymore? My warranty expires in November of next year.

I might just have to upgrade the 20D I've had for years!

I'd upgrade to the 5(6?)d if it had onboard flash. I rarely, if ever, use the onboard flash on my 20d, but just having it makes me feel good. Damn, I'd love a full-frame sensor though!

@Ike_Skelton: the only way i can see that they would make him pay more if the initial price he paid was lower than what the price of the new model was. i know that with the warranty if they dont have the old model anymore they let u use the money that was used for the previous purchase on something else that is equivalent to that price.

Thanks Canon for making my internet smell like urine.
Wheres the 5D love? 5D is over 3 years old and the 40D is less than a year old. I feel like I'm using antiquated equipment. Give us a sign Canon. Anything. Lie to us Canon!

very odd that the 50D would come so early. there really is no reason for it since 40D is only out for about a year or so and not many people have complain bout it. the specs doesnt even improve much compared to the 40D. With seeing those specs i definitely dont regret purchasing my 40d a month ago at all. I do want to see what the new Digic 4 sensor is gonna do tho. lets hope with this new 50D all the accessories wont fit for it so they will lower in price and i wont have to shell out $800 for the wireless grip. I'm really waiting to see the 5DII

@apeguero: My brother did this accidentally with some gadget. It was legitimately broken, and Best Buy didn't carry it anymore, but they had a newer, upgraded model, so they said he'd have to take the newer model and pay the difference between the prices. He wasn't too happy because he had already shelled out the money for the extended warranty and now they were making him pay more, when it was their own fault they didn't have the product anymore.

if those are true... nikon moves into the lead at the upper level cameras, and canon has an edge at the low end?
how the game has reversed!

pretty weird that they're not using the same sensor as the 450d (rebel XSI), since that's been the trend for a while now, also since that sensor's received more or less universal praise, and since i don't think the way to beat the d300 is in megapixels

I don't know why I always feel compelled to reply to posts like this but the comments are always so frustrating.
I am a canon dealer:
1. This is not a replacement for the 40D which will remain in Canon's line for some time, it is a direct response to the D300. P.S. these specs are a bit off as it will allow ISO 25,000.
2. Canon will not and has not released any specs on the "New 5D" until Photokina in September. When they do, expect them to be similar to the D700.
That is information directly from the horses mouth, now proceed to ignore it and conjecture away.

heh,
because they decided to bump it up to a 15.1mp sensor, it's burst rate slowed down from the 40d
6.3fps(50d) vs. 6.5fps(40d)
Looks like I'm still gonna be happy with my 40D until the shutter breaks (or until it gets stolen like my rebel xt)

for anybody that is serious about photography... IT'S ALL ABOUT THE GLASS (LENS for non-photography folk). I rather get another L lens before I get another body. :)

@LoganAdams: is there a 17-35 L? I thought they only had the 17-40 f/4.0 and the 16-35 ff/2.8.

Can someone tell me if a full frame sensor is better than the sensors you find on the 40d and below, and why? Will a full frame always take better pics?

Bigger sensors are better simply because the bigger area means more light will shine on it at the same exposure settings.
Another advantage is better depth-of-filed (DOF) control. You can easily have more DOF, but to have thinner DOF, that requires faster lenses or bigger sensors, combine the two, and you get sweet sweet background blur. I think that's pretty much what new owners of the 5D are so impressed about.
