Build Your Own Waterproof iPod Video Boombox
Posted by Adrian Covert at 4:45 AM on August 24, 2008
Popular Mechanics has a great DIY feature, showing you how to build a waterproof video boombox for your iPod. Making use of an iPod touch, some old speakers, an 8" personal video player screen, video cables, gorilla tape and a hard camera case, Anthony Verducci has created a waterproof video case for the iPod that he believes is the first to float.
It seems the hardest part of the process was getting all the cables to interface with eachother. Working with Apple's composite cables, an old AV iPod dock, and the inputs for the video player, soldering was required to get them all on the same page. The rest was mostly handiwork and a bit of elbow grease. Sure, the final product isn't exactly practical, but it is fun and imaginative. Check out the full video here. [Popular Mechanics]

This is one of those "special" DIY projects that can set you back almost as much as it would cost to just buy it outright.

@glaeven: Actually Pelican makes small cases with transparent lids also, so the need for this is...not so much.

And for even more fun. Try to take that as carry on luggage on your next flight.
Make sure you have someone with a video camera standing just out of view when you put it through the x-ray machine.

I like how saying "old" in front of something pretty much guarantees that you're going to junk it in the process. Anyway, this looks pretty spiffy, fun to use in the shower.

I made the same thing: put the touch in a plastic bag (or two, to be safe) and it floats, is water proof, and you can still use the touchscreen!

@ryanobo66: Yeah... that makes sense... are these plastic bags perhaps, uh, life rafts?

@ryanobo66: I've used this concept myself a few times -- I dock my iPod in some speakers in the bathroom and listen in the shower, put the remote in a ziplock baggie and use it to control the iPod from the shower.

Ha.. Seems like a lot of work for something you can pretty much buy off the shelf. Just ordered a Pelican ipod case online and it was cheap. Great post though.... Looks like you put you're heart into it.
Got mine at The Pelican Store
