Bloo Balls Custom PC Case Mod is a Whole New Kind of Punk
Posted by Kit Eaton at 7:52 PM on August 21, 2008
This custom case mod made for Bit-Tech is just eye-grabbingly bizarre... from the outside alone. Built by a guy called Craig, Bloo Balls was over a year in the making, which included and a whole lot of careful design, redesign and fabrication. There's a mass of careful plexiglass-carving in there, including a hand-made, custom-crafted liquid cooling system for both P4 processor and northbridge. Plumbing and CPUs don't often mix, which is why the build included one fried motherboard. Check out the gallery: it's amazing, inside and out. So amazing, it almost warrants its own genre name... we're just wondering what to call it.
That pic is of the guts of the beast—it's all glistening plexiglass and copper plumbing. And in my mind that sets off a "steampunk-meets Buck Rogers-style retro sci-fi" feeling, complete with flashing lights and lurid plastic colours, but without Tweaky. But that name isn't catchy enough. Over to you guys...[Bit-Tech]

I love the subtlety.
It must be the intricate care taken to balance the use of color and lighting. The smooth, rich blend of complimentary materials and how they work together to unify the design so that a calming, enjoyable, focused work and game experience is the natural outcome.
The careful balance of Feng Shui with Steampunk and 80's club techno is brilliant.
In fact, I can think of no better way to demonstrate the idea that mixing several brilliant concepts does not always produce a good result. His irony in making that statement through the time spent on this is awe inspiring.

This looks like someone who has been living inside a game arcade for his entire life has just set out to build computer cases out of duplo.
Well, maybe not duplo, but crappy plastic anyway. (NOT Lego)

Arcadepunk. This reminds me of a mixture of arcade games from the Jersey Shore and pipes from Super Mario Bros.

I like dreampunk...bright colors, Rube Goldberg-esque; makers, ravers, and stoners all mashed up with the Super Mario Brothers and Lisa Frank. A new meme - make it so!

Have you ever talked to a plumber about plumbing? They all consider themselves to be artists.

Plasti-Punk or Acryli-Punk
This dude knows his plastic, those seams and welds look perfect. It is truley a craftsman who put this together.
It is definately not my style and I think it looks more like a 50's jukebox but the hours he had to spend on it are really impressive. A cross between an artist and a plumber. Interesting mix.

It's definitely some careful work.
The copper tubing is well done.
The styling isn't for me, but you can tell great care was taken with this.
Good luck with the blue balls though.
I've been married for 18 years...I know the deal.

Now that its finished its obsolete. A single core P4 and from the looks of it upgrading and changing parts won't be easy. However; that being said, it looks pretty cool and should make quite an interesting conversation piece.

It truly is ugly, I'll give them that.
I'm sure a lot of work and planning went into this, but where do you put something like that? I suppose it could suit someone who's eternally lost in the 90's, still listening to old Moby, Marusha, WestBam and Sven Väth. The lighting alone would probably be enough to drive me insane, and all that plastic can't be good for heat insulation (even considering the liquid cooling).
The mouse also looks mighty uncomfortable.

It's got it's own style, but I ain't believing the whole hand crafted bit on the plastics. Looks CNC to me then from the looks of it torch glossed the edges. The plumbing looks cool but that's scary as hell having all that copper to accidentally touch any give spot on the MoBo. But I do give him credit for the over all design...regardless of how it's made.

Punk. Punk! Punk? Just because one thing was punk, doesn't mean the next is. all things 'Steampunk' are obviously inspired by the same origin, the use of the Victorian-era as a setting for sci-fi stories. The term also makes direct reference to 'Cyberpunk', a name for people on the margins of society, who's lives are infused with technology. This case mod is not referencing the marginalized, gritty punk aesthetic. It has clean lines, smooth curves and bright colours. Where Steampunk is related to the Art Nouveau, this mod is related to Art Deco. An artistic movement popularized in 1930, just Wikipedia it, a very beautiful time period. All in all, I am suggesting the term 'Cyberdeco' for this challenge of naming the next cool thing! Shawn McL
