Blaupunkt Travel Pilot N700 Overlays Directions on Live Video, Reads Street Signs
Posted by John Herrman at 2:45 AM on August 30, 2008
In the last few months car navigation systems have seen a variety of enhancements, from aerial photography to 3d city modelling to live traffic data and internet connectivity. None, however, have done live video. The Travel Pilot N700 has a small camera stuck on the back of the windshield-mounted unit that feeds live video on which navigation instructions are superimposed. The unit also features voice control, live traffic info, WLAN and Bluetooth connectivity and the ability to read and warn of traffic signs with the integrated camera. The price is expected to be about US$740, but the N700 is exclusive to Europe, for now. Video demo after the jump. [Motor Authority via Navigadget]

hrm. I have a windshield, so I'm thinking the maps that conventional GPS use are probably more helpful, being that they can show me the road far ahead vs. what I can already see.

Awesome product (would have to try it while driving to really know).
Anyone elae think the video was really slow? i.e. aimed at the elderly slow?

@Mith: lmfao that way when you get into an accident and break your expensive gps you know you will go out and buy the same one because of it's awesomeness.

At last, with this all those GPS loving brits will finally be able to keep their eyes on the road!

@Mith: The instructions are super-accurate, taking you onto the sidewalk and into the lobby of the bank your heading to.
On the real though, it should be too far of a step to go from this to a HUD GPS. They already have spedometers and whatnot that reflect off of the windshield, why not embed a gps in there with steering wheel controls?

Yes, very slow.
They should sack the editor, and the producer.
And anyone else connected with this terrible piece of work.
No idea about the actual product. They've managed to make it look very boring.

@xThadd: Very possibly the worst promotional video in the history of promotional videos. But the product seems cool, as long as it doesn't steer you into hapless vendors trying to make a living selling teriyaki chicken skewers on the side of the road before you drove into their stand.

I agree that the video sucks... however... if the device works as advertised, I'd pay $740 for that, just for the camera/recognition part.

Because the maps on my Garmin are extremely difficult to read.

This is pretty sweet. Makes my Garmin look a little pathetic. Leave it to the Krauts to come up with something this innovative.

Looks pretty cool, but how well does the video/arrow overlay thingy work at night? I mean, maybe in a city where everything is well-lit, but out here in the middle of nowhere I don't think it would be very helpful at night...

I wonder if I can hook it up to my rear-view camera that I already have? I may not know where I am going, but at least I would know where I've been.
