Blackberry Flowberry Theme is for Closet Mac Admirers Who Can't Pull the Trigger
Posted by Jack Loftus at 7:00 AM on August 4, 2008
The brand spankin' new Flowberry theme is full of icons for the Blackberry owner who really wants to own an Apple product, like the iPhone or MacBook Pro, but can't quite commit. As you'll see from the video, there's a pseudo Cover Flow quality to the latest effort from bplay, but that's about it. And, just like the iTunes Store and other Apple products, the theme's home screen icons are locked in, giving you that DRM feeling without actually having to deal with DRM.
Bplay says Flowberry is compatible with all device software, but works best with version 4.3 or higher. The unchangeable home screen icons are: Messages, Calendar, Address Book, Media, SMS/MMS, BlackBerry Messenger, MemoPad, and Keyboard Lock [Bplay via Crackberry]

Oh brother. It's just flashy icons and skins. It's still the same thing. I can't believe people can be so attracted to eye candy.

You know I'm a mac fanboy but I just find this incredibly sad. Instead of copying why don't they just you know take the things people like about mac and do it slightly different. Clean simple Icons and ease of use. It doesn't has to look just like the fuckin background ot OSX!

In this article: Blogger that thinks Apple is god
Honestly, what's with all the hate for the BlackBerry here? Apple products are great but the BlackBerry is a great device also. Although this is a horrible Apple imitation.

@Itsuru: It is possible. Rocking a Blackberry and an Ipod Touch. The Blackberry still rules for email and the Ipod rules the mobile web.

Is it not possible to own both a RIM and Apple product, or is tech war and brand loyalty more interesting to write about?

BB os is crap?
It's one of the most stable and functional I've ever used.
Pretty? Maybe not.
But I've never had issues with it.

@coketown: I disagree - the BB OS is crap. I've had one for years through work - a lot of different models, and they've all been crap.
The BB OS you know and love is about to be turned upside down as they try to catch up with iPhone, Android, etc...
So, yeah, this is lipstick on a pig.

Design-wise, the Blackberry OS is already very clean and efficient. This skin actually destroys a lot of functionality because it presets the icons you can use and the order you can have them in. There's nothing wrong with the BB OS as it is so this isn't really "lipstick on a pig" as "whore with a new necklace."

OMG! Ponies!

The problem with BlackBerry skinning is it can destabilize the phone or cause memory leaks. bPhone, which looked great and proved that RIM needs some quality UI designers, caused numerous memory leaks.
My theme of choice tended to be Scribble.
@quikboy: There's nothing wrong with eye candy. The UI is how you interface with the device. It should be simple, pleasant to look at, and give one the feeling that the device is not horribly out of date.
Neither RIM nor PALM has gotten past the Palm Pilot Vx look and that makes their product look outdated. Never undervalue a good-looking UI.

I absolutely cannot stand the BlackBerry UI especially the ugly square font. Nokia and WM are a lot more legible with their mobile typefaces.

Let ppl pick whatever UI they want but if you are gonna make an OSX skin at least make it look like OSX!!!! The dock goes on the bottom (or the sides).

"Who can't pull the trigger."
Man oh man. Well, how Apple looks is one thing and can easily be done anywhere, in any system (I saw an old Nokia theme for it, can't pull the trigger eh?), having an Apple product, specifically the iPhone, work like a BlackBerry is another thing altogether. We all know that MobileMe shat its pants.
I'd rather stick to the device that I can use GoogleTalk, Y!M, AIM, and MSN in real time with (you know, like instant), and has a battery that lasts at least twice as that of an iPhone. I don't spend the entire day looking at my device and feeling happy inside because it looks good because I know it gets the job done.
Kudos to the makers of the theme anyway, a worthwhile effort.

I run bPhone zen on my curve. It looks way sicker than this theme and it was free. There are other apple-esque themes that look way better than this one and also allow you to customize your layouts.
