BlackBerry Bold Plagued by Same 3G Problems as iPhone
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 6:10 AM on August 21, 2008
The BlackBerry Bold has been out in Chile and Germany and drops in Canada tomorrow, so as much as analysts talk out of their arse, Citigroup analyst Jim Suva might not just be blowing hot air when he says that the Bold is plagued by the same 3G connection issues as the iPhone 3G (though 2.0.2 might've made them worse still). Apparently it has a similar penchant for dropping you to EDGE even when there's a perfectly decent 3G signal.
He speculates that the reason the US is late to the party is because AT&T is holding the phone until the cause of the issue--rough software--is sorted out. [Update: For the record, when asked, AT&T punted us to RIM.] After all, one phone having issues seems like a hardware problem (which international carriers in markets with well-established and proven 3G networks are saying about the iPhone). Its two most high profile phones? Well, people start talking. This actually would pose a larger problem for RIM than AT&T, since BlackBerry is largely built on a rep of being a reliable workhorse, and in the wake of the iPhone's wobbly legs (still quaking well over a month post-launch) reliability is a huge point for RIM to harp on to keep suits from straying. Jeez Gizmodo, a little slow. Every 3G phone on ATT has had these problems for 2 years. In my area, Austin, calls still drop occasionally when you leave a 3G area. This is a known issue with ATT but apparently they don't know how to fix it. I am guessing we will continue to have these problems until the whole network is 3G...

Gizmodo needs to get more objective data.
Get these 3G phones in a car and drive to 10 randomly selected locations across the country. It would probably more statistically significant if four people were in the car and using the same phones/software version.
Road trip anyone?

BWAHAHA. Yeah, @paja, I'm in the same boat. My iPhone 3G works great. Based on the rumors I was hearing, it was a small fraction of the first run iPhone 3Gs.

I've had an iPhone since 10 days after launch and the phone has never once dropped a call on me. The only time I had 3G dropping to EDGE problem was when I was in the bellies of the Empire State Building...

my girlfriend and i returned our iPhone 3Gs on friday due to the fact that half our calls were dropped. What a pain. Getting either a Blackberry or a Moto Q from Verizon... it really is more important to have a better network IMO.

I bet no firmware update can easily fix that plastic metal screened thing.

I know at least two dozen people who have iPhones and NONE of them are having any of the problems that Gizmodo keeps ranting on. I guess the 1% or 2% that are having problems are on every blog complaining about it and I can certainly understand their frustration
My Treo drops calls on me occasionally, but I'm sure it's the network and not the Palm software.

Haha i just mentioned this in my comment on the 2.0.2 update 3G problems, my friend with a 3G Blackjack II had the same 3G issues described here and with the iPhone. AT&T?

This is one thing the Bold DIDN'T need going for it. With the iPhone so popular you need to have a flawless launch in order to get the press behind u in a good way....not good news

It's all the shiny new phones - the Nokia e71 has similar RF issues. It will drop to edge in spotty 3G areas and then won't pick up the 3G once its in a well-covered area. Are they all using the same chips? or same Gen of chips?

Hopefully this means the iPhone 3G problems might actually be fixed via an update.

I wish I knew where I heard people telling me the US's cell network is up to par with Europe, and I cried BS. Well now I am more convinced Europe's cell network is better than the US's.

Sounds like this is not a problem with the phone and more like a problem with the carriers network, remember up to now no one has been really using the internet that much on a phone, am not saying the iphone or the bold where the first internet capable phones, but they do take using the internet on your phone to another levl

@Silly McFakeypants: Makes me wonder if this is either a chip problem (do all of these failing phones use the same 3G radio chip?) or AT&T's 3G network...

I just got rid of my Samsung Blackjack, and the reception with that phone was the worst of any I've owned. I haven't had too much issue with the iphone 3G, but maybe I'm just used to the horrible blackjack, because my iphone is WAY better reception wise.
p.s. I sent in my first blackjack, because I figured it had a well documented antennae problem

The fact remains that AT&T and other GSM carriers around the world have what are called inferior networks. Theoretically 3G is really fast and really cool. In reality (where we all live, work and play) it sucks.

@ajlafontaine:
If you get a Blackberry it won't have 3G. The Bold is RIM's first 3G device. If the only thing holding you back is the dropped calls, just get a first gen iPhone. Runs on edge just fine. I haven't dropped a call in almost a year. Besides, the Blackberries will be running on the same edge network. Otherwise you could get an iPhone 3G and just turn 3G off to avoid the problem.

iPhone 3G - gone
Blackberry 3G - gone
I'd say Nokia's looking pretty good right about now.

IMO this is more a network/carrier issue, but a hardware maker would never say such a thing since the carrier is their client/pays them the skrilla. My wifes 3G Lg phone (CU 270 I think) lost 3G while we were driving yesterday, call dropped. My iPhone 3G was still in 3G mode. 3G is sux?

Does anyone know if the Bold uses the same Infineon Gold 3G chipset as the iPhone? Everyone in the world wanted a 3G iPhone. Now it's here and lots of people are unhappy with it. An all-around bad situation, I suppose. Maybe if the Infineon chipset is faulty, Apple can get money back from Infineon.

Welcome to 3G. I've had an AT&T LG phone which runs on 3G and every call is dropped. 3g is terrible for voice calls
