Biggest Aeroplane Model in the World Eaten by Biggest Cargo Aircraft
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 10:00 PM on August 6, 2008
This is an Airbus A380--the largest passenger aircraft in the world--eaten alive by an Antonov AN-124--the largest mass-produced cargo aeroplane in the world (which I filmed inside at Dubai's airport). Before you exclaim "Photoshop!", this is a real photo by Dmitry Avdeev. However, it's not a real A380: it's a 1/3 scale model, which makes it the biggest aircraft replica in the world. So big, in fact, that its 26.5m wingspan is a metre wider than a real Concorde. Seeing it completely built in video gives you an idea of its gigantic scale.

The Emirates A380 model has been placed at the Heathrow Airport roundabout previously known as the Concorde Roundabout--because it had a replica of that plane. It's not made of Lego bricks, but given the fact that it is bigger than my apartment, I won't mind living in one. [Emirates]

So what do you think they did with the old replica of the Concord?

You filmed this in Dubai? I thought they got quite touchy about that sort of thing.

@siville:
Due to the fact that only 8 % of the GDP of Dubai come from the Oil Buisness i would say no, this is your travel dollars at work.

@djheath: Plane, not fancy. You don't fancy the plane. The pain of plane is that it doesn't remain in your brain. ummm. There's more, I'm sure, but I'll leave some for someone else...

@Redwraithvienna: Please, let's not bring facts into this. Everyone knows blood for oil paid for this. /sarcasm

I drove past that the other day, and I have to say, it didn't seem that big as I sped around it.
I am upset they got rid of Concorde on the roundabout. I used to love seeing that. Now I just see plane.... A good plane, but still its just a plane. Not a thing of beauty that Concorde was!

They don't have enough REAL planes flying over head clogging the skyline?

They may not do a lot of oil export but they own large portions of American Banks like CitiGroup. You can bet your ass the Royalty of Dubai owns a few mortgages.

@venomous_duck41: The old Heathrow Concorde is at Brooklands Museum in Weybridge now, not sure if it's on display as it's been a while since I was last there, but I was helping to clean it up just after it arrived.

Photoshop! Haha I'm just kidding.
That is a GIANT model though. The fact that it's only a model makes it cool. Putting a real plane up isn't really that amazing anymore.

I wish I could edit out "sh##". It makes me sound crass when I am merely aggravated. Whats it going to take for a post editing function? "Whos dick do I have to suck here?"-Jack Black, Tropic Thunder(press screening was the best I've ever seen)

@Redwraithvienna: touche for the touch of reality. Too many stupid Americans shouting their mouth off at the middle east when they don't know shit themselves. And I'm American, just pissed off that people are so unobservant or lacking in self education

Isn't the AN-225 technically the "biggest" cargo aircraft? Sure, there's only one in active service, but that doesn't make it any smaller... right? Or am I mislead.

Awww how cute, Airbus built an A380 just big enough for Tom Cruise.
While the Antonov 124 is huge, it's not that much bigger than the C-5 Galaxy. The 124 does have a larger payload though.
I was lucky enough to see 2 An-124's parked side by side at Toronto.

@Stang70Fastback:
The caption said that the AN124 was the largest mass produced cargo aircraft. There is only 1 AN-225 in existence. I used to work for Antonov as a Flight manager on these aircraft. The AN225 is significantly bigger than the AN124. Maximum Take Off Weight for the AN124 approx 398 Tonnes, for the An225 it was about 650 Tonnes.

The coolest thing about that Antonov is probably the landing gear. They are epiQ!!!
