Bed Made of DC-9 Fins Lets You Join Mile High Club at Sea Level
Posted by Kit Eaton at 9:10 PM on August 13, 2008
A chair made of torpedo-launcher parts just wouldn't say "come hither" to techy ladies in the same way as this bed from Motoart. Dubbed Mile High, you can tell it's aimed at the sexier end of the geek furniture market, partly as it's marketed with a "a wonderful playground for you and your co-pilot" slogan, and especially when you notice the line of glowing red LEDs that pimp the frame's lower edge. The 3.4 by 2.3 metre bed is made of two DC-9 stabiliser fins and a C-130 inner flap. And if there's a particular aviator you want to attract between the sheets, you'll likely have to save up: it's price on application only, which generally means lots of dollars. [MotoArt via TFTS]

@doobiebros2two: No, it won't. You'll have to stick to $100 bills and roofies.

Moto-Art, wasn't that the company from that show on Discovery, where the one guy died of a heart attack in the middle of the night? Some of their stuff was really awesome. This reminds me of a shopping cart. I'd feel less like a pilot and more like a bum in a big cart.

Fins? Don't remember that nomenclature from A&P school. Look more like horizontal stabilizers to me.

@jetfxr27:
A vertical stabilizer (also called a fin) is fixed to the aircraft and supports the rudder. The fin nearly always employs a small fillet at its forward base, called a dorsal fin, which prevents a phenomenon called rudder lock.

Meh, the next best thing to a racecar bed, and if yours comes with the skank, you get a special side bonus of herpes...

It's funny how these designers can take old planes, scrap small PIECES from them, polish them, make something functional, and sell it for multiples of what the entire aircraft would cost. Just go buy a flippin Cessna 150 or something and do it yourself. Not that hard.

@shenanigans61: They did a show on Discovery, called "Wing Nuts". It was good watching them scavenge the yards to find pieces. Of course, I'm sure you have to have an "in" with the yards. I would love to visit. Just look at the poor B1-B's just sitting here waiting to "die". [maps.google.com]

"I would like to buy one of your airplane beds. How much does it cost?"
"I'm sorry, sir, but we can't sell you one of those. You can't afford it."
"What do you mean? I've got my checkbook out and I'm prepared to pay you right now."
"Yes, I can see that, but you asked how much they cost. If you have to ask, you can't afford it."
"But if I didn't ask, how would I know how much to write the check for?"
"Sir, that is not my problem. Please move along and give the rich customers some room."
"I'm Bill Gates! How much richer can you get?"
"Sir? Don't make me call security."
