Axon Anti-Gravity RC Racer Hovers Past the Competition at 80 KPH
Posted by Sean Fallon at 11:00 AM on August 8, 2008
The problem with wheels is that contact with the ground generates drag. So, a simple solution would be to develop an anti-gravity car. No sweat--one already exists. Sure it's only a few inches tall but hey, this thing could give your action figures the ride of their tiny plastic lives. Thanks to dual ducted fans and a brushless motor, the Axon can hover above the ground and hit speeds of 40kph almost instantly--and a dual brushless motor upgrade will bring it up to 80 kph.
The car is also damn near indestructible with a body made out of lexan polycarbonate resin thermoplastic on a polyethylene foam base. The resin was used by NASA for the visors on the helmets of Apollo astronauts and it is the same stuff that is currently used in modern day race cars. If the video above is any indicator, you are going to need every inch of that material to protect your US$250 investment. The Axon will be available starting in September. Anti-Gravity is a really misused term. Watch the MythBusters epp on anti-gravity machines. Its hog wash. Nothing actually reverses gravity, it just fights/works with it for a period of time.

For some odd reason I was thinking that this was some uber NASA experiment where they discovered a way to repel gravity (as a geodisist at Fermilab has always been speculating that it shouldn't be long now about 10 yrs ago... if I remember correctly). Well... at least those guys did discover that neutrinos have mass (fermilab, not the toy car makers).
Of course we're just talking about air and a toy... arrggghh...

@trc202: The music is from Wipeout Pulse on the PSP. The whole soundtrack is quite good. I also seems like they modeled the advert off Wipeout Pulse. The way the ships move about is very similar and there were a few scenes that looked like the came right from the game.

Wheels cause friction with the ground. Drag and friction will still happen because of the atmosphere. See what I did there? You can't touch this.

Highlight of the clip: off the ramp, into the pavement, dead stop. Friction? What friction?
Oh, and @Navin R Johnson: it's cooler than the Typhoon because it's not amphibious. Yes, in this case, less is more. It doesn't bring back repressed Discovery Channel memories of the Bayou.

Well I was tempted to pre order, even if it is just a new take on the ol' fan-powered hovercraft, seeing its performance on normal streets was enough to make me WANT.
However, a "pre-order" page that makes me paypal the full amount to a company with little to no information outside of that video is not my idea of a "safe" thing to do.
Oh, and the $249 is the "receiver-ready" version, so you need to supply your own radio. I already have one so that's not a big deal... but if it IS just a block of foam with a motor and a fan, I'm not dropping $249 on it.

A good single brushless system will cost you about $110-$140. To get the 50mph you wil need a second motor for aroung $60 if your controller can handle a second moter. If not, then it is another $110-$140 Don't forget the radio system. A 2.4gHz radio wil cost another $225. Total cost about $600-$780! (The preorder price is $275)

I made this product 5 years ago. It was called Z-Craft and it was the first 6 inch R/C hovercraft. For $29.00.
Here is the URL from my dev server that has the archived website from the now defunct company.

Worked just as well as this one.
SO this is jsut a rehash. Certainlynot worth $25. I made them for $7.50 cost out of China.

Well I e-mailed the address on the site just to see if they responded at all, and was surprised to get a very timely (within the hour) response to my questions about exactly what one is getting when they pre-order one of these items (or buy one once they're actually shipping, as I plan to do).
Basically you get the racer itself, fully assembled, with motors and servos already installed. You need to provide a radio receiver and transmitter, and a battery pack.
For $299 they'll give you the racer and a lipo battery and charger, but you still need to provide radio stuff. This is the route I plan to take as I have plenty of radios already.
Mine are only 2 Channel, but I noticed their full kit will include a 3-channel radio. They did this because they couldn't find any 2 Channel 2.4GHz radios, and wanted the frequency bandwidth and performance of a 2.4GHz system. Only 2 channels are needed for operation of the Razorback.
I definitely plan on grabbing one of these.

@Hoshnasi: That show is retarded. Besides, nobody's trying to actually fool you into believing this thing actually uses some sort "anti-gravity" technology. That you even had to come out and say that reveals a lot about you. Don't even get me started on making assumptions about what's possible based on modern physics (we don't know shit).

Correction. Spoke to the guy a little bit more and the $299 kit includes everything - battery, charger, and radio. That's gotta cut into his profits a bit, but really makes the pricing a lot more on-target for what I'd expect to pay for an electric R/C toy.
I'm sold on this as soon as it proves that it's not vapor.
