AT&T's Tilt Finally Gets Windows Mobile 6.1 Update
Posted by Jason Chen at 6:26 AM on August 19, 2008
AT&T and HTC have finally pushed out the Windows Mobile 6.1 update, which according to Softpedia, brings threaded SMS, video share calling, MS Voice Command, Remote Desktop Monitor and managed programs. Everyone with a Tilt should download this ASAP and get the benefit that fewer bugs provides. Our tipster also tells us that WM6.1 will be available on stock phones within 7-10 days as well. Does it improve the video drivers any? [HTC - Thanks Ding!]

This continues to be an untrue assertion. As of today, 8/22, HTC only carries the WM 6.0 ROM on their site.

As a follow up of my post above -- don't install it or you'll end up with the same "old" ROM, but with all your addons and programs and data gone (like out of the box).

FYI -- The HTC sight has had the link up since late last week, but it's the wrong file. It's the previous ROM. According to comments at the Tiltsite, HTC says they linked the ROM to the older one in error, and should fix it this week.

AT&T Charges extra for cowbell.
Hurry up and get 6.1 to the other phones!
(@Xavoc: But ya, I hear that; tethering is the only reason I don't already own an iPhone. QQ)

Oh wait, this is an HTC, and not one of those Sanyo PDA phones. Nevermind...

Ladle ladle ladle, I made you out of clay...
Why would I purchase this over an iPhone? I've found predecessors to this thing to be bulky, low on battery time, and to have fairly lousy reception.

Yeah right. First, the AT&T Tilt doesn't have a second camera. Second, again, this is bizarre wording.
There are no video drivers. All we got was a "performance update" which did not include drivers.

There are 3rd party drivers out, but no sign of first party ones. I've sent several updates to the Giz tip line on that but I guess it isn't checked too often.
Anyway, this is cool if you want the stock ROM but the good folks over at xda-developers have been putting out 6.1 builds for months and months.
Drivers (NOTE: At this point they aren't very useful in daily use and can mess stuff up so do this at your own risk)
ROMs (you will need to do a bit of work to get these working- there's a guide here)

@ajcali08: or the rogue employee failed to relay his info correctly and the said update won't be available until later this month....not that I know anything different, I'm just saying.

@WickedSoul: yes, if this magical "AT&T code" you speak of fully unlocked the phone, then it will stay unlocked.

@dink23: you would think HTC would changed the site back after they took off the update to avoid confusing ppl. They even have a screen shot of the system info showing the update ROM and the date is was released which is 7/17/08..1 month ago..

Uhm wow, I downloaded this and the video performance is VASTLY updated. I have been running cooked roms to improve things lately, and this latest HTC ROM is the best i have ever seen. The camera is actually usable now. Im amazed.

@Xavoc: Low battery time, lousy reception...isn't that an iPhone 3G you're describing?
Still on the fence whether to go for the Tilt or an iPhone when I finally retire my 8525. Lack of iPhone tethering, no Slingbox player, and that rotten touchscreen keyboard (had my first run-in playing with a friends iPhone) are leaning me more towards sticking with the HTC offerings.

I've been using WM6.1 on my HTC Excaliber(T-Mobile Dash) since March. An iPhone it ain't but what it is is the best Windows Mobile offering yet. Stable (and mine's a hacked beta) and highly hackable. Threaded SMS rocks.

Giz, I suggest you make an correction. It is not available yet. That download link on HTC's site says its for 6.1 but still points to a 6.0 ROM.

@spohnsoftware: The speed is dreadful:
1. It is not the 6.1 ROM
2. AT&T likes to load their ROM updates with lots of crapware.

WAIT, EVERYONE WAIT!!! I download this two days ago, and the speed is dreadful. Head over xda-developers and locate Dutty's 6.1 ROM for the Tilt. Hands down, so much faster your eyes will bleed!!!!

Way to go Giz, post an article without verifying it. Over 250 people have posted at AT&T's forum since this was posted that this is still the 6.0 ROM, not 6.1 despite its claim to be. See [forums.cingular.com] I guess those on this thread that said they downloaded it are caught with their pants down. Shame on AT&T and HTC for this debacle, and Giz, please repost this with some mention of the fact that it has been over 100 hours since HTC posted this and still no dice.

I spent too much time taking all that AT&T crapware off my phone to go and put it all back on again. If there's something on this that actually makes the phone better, I'll wait until the XDA guys rip it out for us.
I have serious doubts that this will have much, if any, improvement over Dutty's roms.

@drewls: I believe if you install the ROM and it's loading all the AT&T crap if you soft reset it won't load any of that garbage. I'm looking forward to this ROM update so I can do the same thing.

can you explain this?
soft reset during installation?

Pasukin
Posted 10:12 AM 20/8/08
@br4nd0n:
After you flash a stock ROM or hard reset your phone, and as soon as it's done booting, it usually displays a message that the device will be "customized" in 3 seconds. This customization is the installation of all the crapware that AT&T and other carriers add to your device.
If you soft-reset your phone when that message is displayed AND BEFORE the installation begins, none of that extra software will be installed to your phone. I've done this several times and it works fine. Your phone will run much better as a result.

I downloaded and installed this ROM and now I can't get a data connection! The phone says it's connected, but none of my programs, including PIE won't connect at all. I hopped onto my wifi network and everything still can't connect. I hardly ever talk on my phone and without a data connection it's essentially useless, except for txting.
