Asus' Ultimate Eee PC S101 Will Have 64GB SSD, US$899 Price Tag
Posted by Kit Eaton at 7:07 PM on August 7, 2008
The shiny brown machine in the photo there is apparently the top-of-the-range Eee PC S101 that was shown in Asus' leaked presentation last month. It looks just a little bigger than the white 901 model next to it, and it will be about 2.2cm deep, have a 10.1-inch LED-lit LCD, and have an Intel Atom purring away inside. What makes it "ultimate" is presumably in part its SSD: it'll come with either a 32GB or 64GB solid-state drive, and that's why the two models will cost around US$699 and US$899 when available in October. And they may not carry the "Eee" label, or so the rumour goes. [PChome.tw]

No, really. What's the point? If someone is forking over that kind of cash, they're going to at least get a decent processor. I'll take the $699 Wally-world special over that anyday.
Will someone please make a 7.5" 200dpi touchscreen internet tablet, and sell it for less than $550? And, Santa, please let it run some Linux variant, so I can customize the snot out of it?

Isn't the point of buying a cheap laptop that the laptop be, well, cheap?

And the point of the exercise being Asus can and will sell mobile computers in the Sony segment? Well, if you're going that way, Asus, would you mind adding a bit more style?

Top-of-the-line in a low-end ultramobile computer category. This should be called the EEEEpc...the extra E is for expensive. I'll take my $400 laptop, even though it's a little bulkier, than this thing any day.

[www.woot.com] a good hp laptop w/2gigs of ram and vista. WTF else do you need, do you REALLY need it that much smaller and less capable for more money? get with reality, its not like it fits in your pocket. And I'm not plugging woot I'm plugging an ALTERNATIVE. I don't care who provides the laptop but there are SO MANY UNSOLD LAPTOPS FROM JUST SEVERAL MONTHS AGO that would outclass a EEE in all regards except maybe its cutesy form. Bleh people will still buy new I'm wasting my time.

Wasn't the point of the Eee PC line small form-factor/low price. Asus has really strayed form their original Eee product line big time.

They really should have a better chipset imo, but appart from that, this one is pretty cheap compared to other 64gb SSD options out there

Thats WAY to expensive for a tiny laptop, I'd rather drop the price a few hundred dollars and have a regular HDD.

ASUS does no research or whatsoever before they push new EEEs out to the market.

Yeah but just think.. With an SSD you can throw it against the wall when you realize what a waste of money it was and it still (might) work!

I don't know what everyone is complaining about. I would totally buy this if I had tons more money and tons less sense. (cents?, since? that thing that lets me know if I am having good ideas or bad ideas. Like continuing on with this post... sometimes I put it a little more than just my two sents.)
EEE PC forever!!
Seriously though, Asus must have incredibly low overhead to modify their production facilities to push out each new EEE PC. It seems like they are just trying every little segment they can to see what sells best. Kinda makes you wonder if they are A) doing the craziest form of market research possible, or B) capitalizing off of their investment in their production facilities and creating dozens of ultra niche Eees rather than pulling a dell and giving you two or three basic laptops with very limited customizability.
I cant wait to see how this flood of netbooks works out.

Someone should contact Asus and point them to one of these Gizmodo posts including all the comments. Maybe they'll take a hint and figure out that the expensive "cheap" netbook idea really isn't appealing.
