Asus R710 GPS with Head-Up Display Demoed on Video
Posted by Kit Eaton at 12:00 AM on August 5, 2008
This is some video of Asus' swanky new GPS model that projects data onto your windshield, saving you from distracting yourself from the road by peering at a device screen. So will the R710 make you feel like you're flying a fighter aircraft with glitzy HUD graphics? No, not really, as it projects just some very basic info, like distance to next turn and which direction you're going in. But if it prevents accidents, and makes navigating across tricky junctions a little easier since you won't have to move your eyes from the road, seems like a great idea to me. [Navigadget]

Wont some of the light go through the glass and blind oncoming drivers?

this'll be cool when there is more on the windshield than that little arrow.

I hope this works better than the HUD on our 2002 Buick Rendezvous...
With that one, if you were wearing polarized sunglasses, then you couldn't see the HUD.

So how exactly does this project on to the windshield?

Definitely the right direction to go for GPS displays...

@kickassy: Only if the other drivers floating are directly above you AND staring at the top of your dashboard. Seriously dude...

Awesome.
But I think I might be more distracted by the numbers counting down. I'd be like 100..90..80... BAM! and hit some car that I missed because I like blinking lights.

@jun2san: At the begging of the pan to the hud you can see a tube looking thing sticking out of the side, that's the projector.
@kickassy I don't think the light is that bright.

@chasmm:
That's always going to be a problem with HUD (and some LCDs for that matter). HUDs work off reflections, which polarization is suppose to remove to make things clearer.
I love my HUD in one of my cars, and wish more manufactures would use them because they are great safety features to keep your eyes on the road instead of down on the dash or radio. I avoid polarized lenses on my sunglasses for this reason. It's a tradeoff I'm willing to make.

@chasmm: How have the Defense Industry solved this problem with HUDs now? Those jocks have to deal with alot worst blinding sunlight all the time. Plus, I think their helmets are polarized.
They should also add warning lights for low fuel and tire pressure plus the CEL too. This is long overdue.

Very interesting! This definitely is the right direction. I was reading about displaying in your glasses and even in your contact lenses at [www.internetevolution.com]

Actually, the HUD panel on jets is made of treated glass - it's a regular old CRT style tube (no polarization issues), aimed at a special glass that only reflects the wavelength of the display tube (which is why they're only shown in one color). The graphics remain simple because shading/etc doesn't work too well either (and obscures the view).
Plus, with the glass at a fixed angle, any polarization that happens is easily compensated for - cars don't have such luxury.
