Apple Recieves Six New Patents: New MacBook, Dock Designs Coming?
Posted by Matt Hickey at 1:00 PM on August 6, 2008
Apple today received not one but six patents for a variety of items, including an iPhone/iPod Touch stand, an amplification system, a form of speech synthesis, and something it calls a "computing device" that looks a lot like a MacBook to us. Also, a new earbud/lanyard design, and a new backlighting scheme. Keep in mind, some of these patents might be for things Apple already sells, it's a common practice and is responsible for the "patent pending" phrase on some products. Others, though, like the stand, haven't been seen by eyes outside Apple, and it makes us curious if we ever will. [MacNN]

Keep in mind, also, that Apple (like MS and many others) often patent things they won't necessarily make. And it can be to distract attention of competitors from other things. Quite sneaky and evil, but... genius

have none of you ever opened an iPod Touch box? That stand has come with every one sold from the beginning.

that is really odd. I just bought this:
and it came with a stand EXACTLY like that. (minus the linking on a USB cable)

So you can charge the dock but not your iDevice? Sweet.

I had that lanyard a few years ago, for my old Nano.

One of the patents doesn't happen to be a "whole net infrastructure" perhaps?
Because I recently heard they were needing to look into that.

The stand is a great idea but the $ 30-40 price wont be; and whats the purpose of having it connected to the usb cable since you wont be able to charge the iphone/touch when its docked in the stand by the way the picture is depicted.

Seriously, how is this news? I've seen this patent post on way too many lame blogs today. This piece of crap plastic stand/cable-cap has been included in the box of every single iPod Touch ever sold! Mine is sitting on my desk right now with the cable plugged into the "stand" and the iPod Touch sitting in it on its side.
Really Giz... Come on.

It looks like these patents are all for products that have already been released, sorry to burst your bubble if any of you had gotten your hopes up.
Also, I think the idea of plugging the cable into the stand was just so you had a place to keep it so it didnt fall off your desk or anything? That's the only real reason I could think of.

Yep, it seems like a new Dock based on induction charging.
I'd fancy it if the USB cable connected from behind even if it made it wider.

Okay, I've definitely seen one of those stands before (several of my friends have iPod touches) but I have absolutely no idea why you would plug in the dock connector. Is it possible that the aluminum rim can be used to charge the device? I highly doubt it, but that's the only explanation I can pull out of my ass right now.

I have the patent for the Interweb... o.o
Steve Jobs stole it from me years ago, and based MobileMe off of it.
Lucky me.

That the little clear plastic stand that already comes with the iPod Touch. As for the cable in the side; All they are showing is that you can put the usb dock cable into the side of the stand allowing it to basically act as a terminal protector and/or a "leash" so that you dont loose the stand.
Nothing new here

Have they patented an iPhone that you don't have to restore twice a day? Or at least brought the total amount of down time to 2 hours as opposed to 4? Seriously I love my iPhone but after having it go down with the "Stuck on Apple logo reboot", the honeymoon is over. I've restored my iPhone 8 or 9 times since August 2nd. I am now forced to carry a motorola with me in case the iPhone bricks itself when I'm out... Seriously WTF.

I wonder how many of these patents are "co-invented" by Stevo?

I can't remeber using my iPod touch plastic dock... well, ever. I just though Apple included them for the sake of it.

Holy cow! I accidentally received that little plastic stand with my iPod Touch last September! Wow! I bet somebody will be getting in trouble from old Steve!! How did that get in my box?!?! Did somebody in the development lab make a mistake?!?!!! I love exclamation points!!!

@twoeightnine:
of course. sweet induction will sort that out. all devices up to 50cm away from the dock get charged.

Only one time did i ever have to restore my 1.0 phone and my 2.0 has not needed restore.
WTF are you doing to your phone man?
And yes this just you as there are Millions of VERY satisfied iphone users.
Maybe your a Motorola Razor kinda person....what a pity for you.

Totally unrelated thread. OK Giz, please don't ban-hammer me, however I feel as though we should seek a rocket solution to nuclear waste. send that poop to the sun, right?!?!?!
96 Billion seems like a lot of rocket technology to send the results of fission to the sun eh?? I see a DOE and NASA team building challenge!!
Love the insecure Apple data, keep it coming, huge fan, bigger Fanboy.
More Fan-pack data please. I have yet to hear a thrust to weight ratio. Give me more!!!

The stand is simply an end cap for the dock connector end of the usb cable. You get another end with a clip to hold the cable in a coiled manner also. So with both on, you can carry the cable in your ag with no fear that the plugs get mashed.
Really, is it that difficult to figure out?

This plastic thing already is shipped with the ipod touch. It's quite useful for video watching. that's about it.

Joining the chorus, the first one is just the stand that's been shipping w/ the iPod Touch since last September. No magic here, just plastic. I never would have thought to attach the dock cable to it, but sure enough it works. Potentially useful....maybe.
The only interesting one here is the LED backlighting, and 3 years after application for the patent, this might be the method already used on the current notebook line. Nothing new here.

This is so funny. Apples secrecy causes so much rumor mill news and always keeps them in to forefront of news columns. Seems like a brilliant marketing strategy.

@Wowwzers: Installing or updating my apps, restarting my phone and sometimes just out of the blue it will go to the Apple logo startup screen. This is a known issue, that many many people are facing, I've significantly cut down on 3rd party apps to see if that helps. And it's my dad's moto razor since I can't seem to find my old SE. My 1st gen iPhone that I gave him is working just fine for him. I've had an iPhone since day 1 and never had an issue and I've had a 3g for just over 2 weeks and it's been a giant headache. Don't believe me? [forums.macrumors.com]

Looks like a horizontal dock to be used for GPS turn by turn nav. Makes sense that apple would want to benefit from this accessory.

from my personal experience in using the dock with my itouch
the dock is not there for the cable to be plugged in.
but rather .. the cable is there for the dock to try and not lose itself.....

That item already exists. It comes with the iPod touch. Just go on to Google Images and type in "ipod touch stand"
