Apple Patent: Stream Your Entire iTunes Library From Anywhere
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 11:40 AM on August 8, 2008
Apple patents don't always bear fruit, but this one seems like it'll happen, and soon, actually. It's for accessing your entire iTunes library from anywhere--streamed to your iPhone or touch either via Wi-Fi or over the air. Basically, this future iTunes will sync the metadata for your whole library, and all the music and videos stored back on your computer ("virtual media items") will be totally integrated with the content actually on your device, so it'd be just like having your entire library on your phone.
Not only does this imply the long-desired ability to wirelessly sync (and over great distances), wireless iPod-to-iPod connectivity and data sharing is part of the patent too--yes, just like Zune squirting. Welcome to the social, or something. Again, while Apple patent dreams don't always come true, this one has a definite sense of realness to it--it'd make for a nice announcement at next month's expected iPod/MacBook event, in any case. Can't Orb.com already do the same thing? I am probably missing something but it seems like the same thing Orb does.

att will LOVE this.
Not to mention its not that novel. But I guess if Apple does it then the idea has finally arrived - regardless of how old it is.

@Der182: I hope your not talking about the Zune Wifi synching, Dude the crap is useless, it's not like some of us never had a zune before!!!
10 minutes to sync a 2 songs that will take you 2 seconds via wire??? makes no sense and you have to be by your PC anyway lol, now over the air synching, meaning any where in the world back to your PC makes more sense don't you think????

Those data caps will easily kill this dream.
Anyway, that's why I have an 80 gig iPod; so that I can carry my whole library of music where ever I go.

I'm reasonably certain these patents are mostly vapor to get the competition wasting resources trying to "catch up."

The PS3 and PSP will probably remain a more powerful system to achieve this "mobile library" concept.
When you think about it, iTunes is fairly restrictive on what content can be used; this can be an advantage or disadvantage depending on how you look at it. All streamed data is similar because there are so few data types to deal with right? But at the same time, you can't stream your data unless it's in iTunes!
PS3 and PSP on the other hand are capable of receiving many forms of media from a streaming server which can be encoded for proper playback. This essential functionality is lacking in the iTunes solution.
Have all your stuff consolidated into one package or have the freedom to do what you want... those seem to be the choices!

@snitch29: "2 seconds via wire" It takes more than 2 seconds to sync 2 songs; it takes 2 seconds to start the sync let alone start sync it atleast takes 3-4 seconds

can you actually patent stuff that has already been patented?
and I bet most would think that Apple created this idea...and oh what a great idea

Wait, seriously?
Syncing I understand, but would anyone in their right minds stream music to their phone when they could simply copy it?
I don't understand why anyone would want this?

@Pope John Peeps II: You see, mobile devices are limited by their storage capacity. With this, no problems. All your music (and other iTunes stuff), all the time.

Seattle area company Melodeo has been doing this for years now. They give you access to your iTunes library via your cellphone. They likely have a patent on it too.

Anybody here use seeqpod.com ?
Rather than loading up my worklappy with music, I just search for tunes, create playlists and play them from any browser. No buying, no downloading, instant gratification (Seeqpod if you're listening, you owe me a beer, user name kidholiday).
They've got a stripped down version of this for the iphone/itouch, probably cause it has to run off of Safari. If they ever come up with a dedicated app, kinda like Pandora, it's gonna kick some major ass.
This as iTunes/iPod's greatest threat.

There are pleanty of free services to do things like this already. Maybe not to your phone, but to a laptop/desktop. If you're carying around and iphone or ipod chances are you don't give a shit bout streaming your own music anyway.

Apple stealing the "squirting" idea from Zune?
Now, that's a freakin' headline!
(Not that I'm saying Zune hasn't copied a few ideas, but it looks like Cupertino has started it's copiers, too. Perhaps it intended as flattery.)

wow. never registered to comment until now. what about this makes "this one seems like it'll happen, and soon, actually."?? no evidence to that at all. and right after an article about how android is screwed? pretty sure most software generally is delayed nowadays. still looking forward to that way more than any "new" concept for streaming music apple comes up with

C'mon apple, come through with this one and I'll take back all the bad things I said about recessed headphone jacks and fascist-like secrecy. I WANTS. BAAD!
