Android Developers Challenge Ends: Winners Love Location-Based Services
Posted by Kit Eaton at 8:03 PM on August 29, 2008
Back in May we brought you news of the round 1 winners of the Android Developer Challenge, and now the coding-fest has come to an end, and the winners have been announced. Of our five favourites from round 1, none made it to the 10 top finalists (each earning US$275,000 for the developing team) but there's nevertheless a common theme in these 10: location-based services. Four of the ten make some use of your location, for shopping or other reasons and several of the second-place US$100,000 reward winners do too. Check out the Developers blog link for the full list—it makes for interesting reading. I bet you find yourself comparing the list to Apple's App Store offerings. [Developers.blogspot]

Great apps. I wonder how other devices with worse battery life than the iphone are going to handle them with always-on features.

@$l@brun3r: This coming from the same person who's last comment criticized someone for saying the sprint airave was bad before it came out? Oh, but you got this vision while feeling your bone, my mistake.

@$l@brun3r: How exactly will it fail?
I mean, I know its not the prettiest OS in the world, but I think it will do fine.
The iPhone's sale have been through the roof, just like the Mac sales have been. Both run versions of Mac OS X, it looks good but it's also pretty much 'closed-down' when it comes to new applications. Yes developers can make new apps, but every application has their limits and must abide by laws given by Apple.
Android is more open-source. Kind of like Windows and Linux (if you will). Not nessisarily pretty, but anyone and everyone can make applications for it. It will also be released on multiple phones in the coming years. This will be a lot more popular for developers because they have no limits. It's like a giant open-source linux phone. whoa o.o

@$l@brun3r: Not hardly. It seems that the majority of smart phones are either running a proprietary OS, that's made just for that phone, or Windows Mobile. Android is going to be another option for phone manufacturers who don't want to develop their own OS.
This is just like when PCs were starting. Almost every PC maker had their own OS. Then came all the PC makers that just wanted to do the hardware part and stick someone else's OS on it. I think smart phones are going the same way. In a couple of years it won't matter who makes the phone but what OS it's running and it looks like most will be running Windows or Android.

I'm definitely getting in round two!
@Jon B.: In theory thats true, but in reality, Windows still has 90% of the market share and *nix has the rest.

I don't consider myself an Apple fanboy in any way, but I do own an iPhone and I love it.
However, is there any possibility that Android will come to the iPhone through some sort of jailbreaking process? I love the iPhone's interface, but I just feel like the Android will open up so much more in terms of applications for the iPhone than the actual iPhone does.
And I'm much more of a Google fanboy than an Apple one. :P

The pessimist in me wants to agree whole-heartedly. I'm hoping that google isn't trying to do too many things at once. I mean, its supposed to be a phone first and foremost, but I haven't heard anything about its voice architecture or capabilities. Its supposed to be open source and I haven't heard jack about security. On top of that, most if not all pictures of the inerface and apps are so tiny and low rez. Are they hiding something?
Then the optimist in me thinks the googleaid tastes great and can't wait to ditch its new Sidekick 3 for something like this.

The cab app and barcode related apps are cool but I'm not amazed by the offerings overall. Ironically, I bet the best shit is going to come from google directly.

Chicken/Egg-Egg/Chicken.
Wake me when there is a phone I can actually hold in my hand, Apps may be the best thing ever but if the interface is shit who cares?
Think of a beach ball, filled with air from the sumit of Mount Fuji, so clear and crisp and yet.....it's still a f**king beach ball.

I agree. I'd probably only use the barcode app. The other ones are kinda blah to me.

If google made their own hardware then they can compete with Apple, but until then I'm keeping my current phone.

This is why there is no end to the iPhone spam on the Web. How can you love it if you don't even have one? Doesn't matter. The Apple brand is just that powerful.

None of those apps look good at all. they are all random social networks. I will get an Android phone if it comes to Sprint, but they better get some better stuff than that. Also, the system looks great, and so does the UI, its just the UI is kinda ugly. All they need to do is make the emblems and images a little less 90s PC/Mac-reminiscent. But besides that, it looks way better than Windows mobile.
