Android 0.9 SDK Beta Now Available: Includes Major UI Update
Posted by Sean Fallon at 5:57 AM on August 19, 2008
The Android 0.9 SDK r1 Beta represents the first formal release on the path to Android 1.0 and it is available now for download. Outside of the normal bug fixes, users will notice some major UI updates--including a new widget-enhanced home screen, a tab to pull up apps, a camera and a media player. There are also a whole slew of API upgrades that should significantly enhance usability. Any further changes between this version and the final release version are expected to be small, but keep in mind that apps created with this version may not be compatible with 1.0. UPDATE: Screenshots of the new UI added.
[SDK Download and Release Notes Thanks Jeff!]

@yoshi:
What phone? All I see are screen captures from an open OS SDK that makes the iPhone look like the Berlin Wall.

Is it just me or does that phone remind anyone of a Zune? Is it a real phone, or just a mock up?
Anyway, I'm definitely psyched about the Android platform. Creativity and innovation won't be limited by Apple, plus it should actually drive competition in that market. Everyone wins!

These pictures are screen caps directly from the SDK and have nothing to do with a specific device.

@Bluesk1d:
Android in general does not impress me at all. T-Mobile can have it at this point.
I am curious to see how Apple handles it's relationship with Eric Schmidt when Android is released. I've read where Schmidt has to leave the board room when they discuss the iPhone.

Notable lines from the change log:
* Due to significant API changes in the upstream open-source project and due to the timeline of getting certain Bluetooth profile implementations certified, a comprehensive Bluetooth API will not be possible or present in Android 1.0.
What does this mean for third party apps that would use bluetooth, such as a playstation 3 controller, or bluetooth storage device? No go?
* We regret to inform developers that Android 1.0 will not support 3.5" floppy disks.
That's game killer :P

Anybody check if those icon files have a "(c) BeOS 1998" string in them?

Man I sooooo regret waiting on line for 6 hours (they told me it would be around three, shift change...) at the Apple store for the sorta cool, but really annoying iPhone 3G. If the HTC Diamond, or a decent Android phone had been out at the time, then I would have been getting my grope on. It's sad how "open" Microsoft looks compared to Apple.
The screenshots look nice. Hopefully a lot of developers get on board to produce quality applications. We'll see.

What if Google were do develop their own ad based music store. It could be the first serious challenger to iTunes. If I can get this phone for free in exchange for advertising I'd happily take one.

For those like "Omg it's ulgy" well know the fact that it's COMPLETELY open and you can make it look like what ever you want it to look like. My contract with T-mo ends on sept - 27th I am really really not sure if I'm going to switch or not, I was really keen on switching prior to this announcement, now I'm going to wait and see.

@yoshi: Um. If you didn't get the memo. He's not part of the Apple's Board anymore. They had to ask him to leave the room too many times.

These guys should really make the interface a bit cleaner...
And i really dont like the font they have chosen/made. they should take a good look at the interface from SE! I rly love it and it has some nifty stuff in it.
Still pretty exited about this though! I have faith in google for they have brought me Gmail!

What a bad choice in Icon selection. Why are we back to 2003 Cartoon Icons?

As a former iPhone user and current Tmobile customer out of contract, I am very excited about this OS, as well as the HTC Dream, the first phone to run Android.
In terms of the "look" (fonts, icons, etc.), correct me if I'm wrong, but being a truly open OS, doesn't that mean that all kinds of skins will be made for this thing? Not that I have a problem with it in its current iteration, but for the naysayers...

@Technogen: You've got the better phone. And MS has always been more open than Apple. It would appear that Apple is trying t change that, however.

@iSmoteThee: I was thinking the same thing (re: skins) -- but that makes me worry; how many problems are they going to ignore away with "Hey, it's Open: *you* can fix it!"
I'm still excited... I can't wait until somebody comes out with an iPhone skin!!!

yagh!! Thro up in my mouth a little bit seeing that jeesus ugly phone. i had high hopes, but it looks like terrible ass shit. when will they learn that the screen needs to fillout the entire device with only like 1-3 millimeters of edge on the sides. iPhone (eventho i own one) looks like terrible ass shit too, with its unbelievable ugly above and below areas. plus the 3g has ugly side areas too (how come they made it worse?)

@darklybishop: What? you still haven't realised that android will run on many different phones? your statement has nothing to do with Android which is an OS.

That is a mock up device, not an actual phone. It's about time T-Mobile has something to say for themselves. As a customer, I actually find T-Mobile to be very good price and service wise overall.

Just tried the emulator. In applications, you can hold down your 'finger' on a text field, a copy/paste menu pops up. cool.
