Alien Secret Base Discovered in the Alps Is Actually Medical Centre Concept
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 10:12 PM on August 17, 2008
First an alien mothership stranded in the desert, and now a whole extraterrestrial homebase right in the heart of the Alps, where people love to have jacuzzi orgies at 15,000 feet and fly on jet wings. Fortunately for earthlings, it's just a concept for a medical centre for rehabilitation of trauma surgery patients designed by Sarah Schneider. Seeing how outwordly it looks inside, I wish it was just apartments.

Absolutely beautiful. [Dezeen]

That's a lot of useless space in those "rafters" in the lobby. Good luck finding someone to fund it.
As much as I would like to work in a clinic like that, I don't think we'll be seeing it come to reality anytime soon.

this is a very unrealistic concept, but neat non the less.

Oh, and people in the future aren't handicapped.

This looks like a winner in the "who can design the most expensive to build lobby....EVER.
Does anyone who reads Giz know how to hang drywall (gypsum board for your European types) other than me? There are virtually no flat surfaces here. Imagine all that hand sanding work. GACK! The labor costs alone of finishing that lobby would double the budget!

that should be apartments, looks like a fail at medical center design.

Cool concept but the real beauty is seen from the top, so only people flying over get to see the best part. Not very pracitcal.

it's bad enough as it is finding where to go when you have a fork lodged in your head from your nephew playing "Star Wars: attack of the kille utensil". Going into a lobby like that and looking for the ER... might as well just sit down in the center of the room and start hari-krishnaing

@Curves: Good point, but it looks like the people inside it are in for a treat as well. I guess everyone wins. =)
Errrm... unless you're there because you're dying. Dubious honors, to be sure.

@Technogen: unobtainium does not need expansion joints, nor traditional structures like beams and joists.

Could work if they build it out of new materials instead of the current once, but biggest problem is movement in the structure, there needs to be more seams for things to expand and contract.
Overall I'll say the same I did for the other building, pretty, pointless but pretty.

Perhaps not in the US, but Europeans place a higher value on things like that than Americans do. To them it's not always about the cost. My bet is this thing gets built.

@soulfinger: I am a European, and in medicine.
There's not a single country that could afford to build a public clinic like that. Not with tax payers' money. At least noone with access to the Alps. Have you seen Swiss hospitals?
And private clinics look for snazzy and practical designs. With good reason. I'd like my employer to put the new MRI before a lobby with round windows.

@Hvedhrungr: Agreed. This design would be far more practical as a resort than as a clinic.

@Hvedhrungr: i have to agree with you. I'd NOT like to live in a world where the public health sector has the amount of resources to fund this. looks more like the project in The Island than an actual health clinic.
also, since when getting snow-blinded and freezing your ass off are beneficial to rehab patients?
the interior would be good for skateboarding nonetheless. horrays for deaths in a wheelchair!

The whole thing is one big ramp. What could be more handicap accessible?

Yeah, you're right. We might as well stop dreaming and just keep building big square boxes. Wouldn't want to try and improve on design or aesthetics or anything.
