Acer Drops Price of Aspire One to Impulse Buy Territory
Posted by Mark Wilson at 11:30 PM on August 22, 2008
Acer's Aspire One was already one of the most affordable 8.9" mini-notebooks on the market, but now they've gone and dropped the price further while adding a 6-cell battery version to the mix. The Windows XP version (120GB hard drive and 1GB RAM has been reduced US$50 from US$400 to US$350. Their Linux system (8GB SSD and 512MB RAM) dropped US$50 as well from US$380 to US$330. Oh, and those of you wanting the 6-cell system can pick it up for the old price of the 3-cell, US$400. So is Acer worried about the competition from a potentially US$300 Dell system? We don't know, but we sure do like seeing prices going down for once. And for the time being, the Aspire One is probably the best deal in the mini-notebook market. [Laptop]

@Hectorvex: Isn't that why they call it an "impulse buy?"

@Hectorvex: Okay... apparently no one told the retailers there was a price drop, as the Linux version is still listed at $379... any idea when the price drop will go into effect?

I wish my impulse buys were that affordable. I'm incredibly frugal when it comes to things under $1k.

With the pace these things are coming out with different prices and lots of releases, it makes me want to just sit back for a year or two and wait until something truly catches my attention, rather than just pulls at my random-gadget-impulse-buy reflexes.

I found Aspire One and S10 both are extremely attractive, I have first gen EEE right now, I will definitely get this or S10 in about 2 months. too cute,

Son of a~~~!
I just bought mine 2 days ago! -___-
But I'm loving it so far. Wonder if Microcenter will give me a price match on it? I was planning to get the lenovo s10 (bit better specs) but i don't think I can wait 2+ months for it to trickle down to the consumer. The aspire deal is now a no brainer, but I wonder how long it will take that drool-worthy configuration to finally make it to stores?
I say you'll see it available by October at the very earliest....

I was actually looking at buying one of these today or tomorrow (after seeing how much Dell's subnotebook is). While this is a great price point, I've verified that at least Microcenter will not be following suit in an immediate fashion.
After calling them, they verified that just because the manufacturer drops their price, doesn't mean they will, since that would mean lost money on the units they already have in stock.

I suppose at that price, it wouldn't be so hard to buy me another one in 6 months-1year time to replace what I have.
The problem with waiting before you pull the trigger on a purchase is.....the waiting. And the lost usefulness/productivity you had for waiting. I plan on using mine on my 1/2 hr train commute to learn a new language (rosetta stone rocks), an ebook/offline website reader, and watch movies. And my favorite function....I downloaded wikipedia for viewing offline.
Of course if I waited long enough, I could also get expresscard support, bluetooth, bigger battery, touchscreen, 3G, AND tablet functionality all for the same $400. None of which I desperately require (sans a battery perhaps). Think of all the productivity I can accomplish between then and now!

Well son of a ... I just bought one of these from Newegg three weeks ago at the full price. I've never ordered from Newegg before, I just chose them based on reputation. Anyone know if they lower the price will they refund me the difference if I ask? I know they dont accept any returns on laptops, but a $50.00 price drop less than three weeks later...geez.

Hello Dell? It's Friday. Ya said Friday, dincha? The 22nd? I don't see the E on dell.com, Dell. I told you you were begging for me to buy a competitor's product. This Aspire move just about seals that deal.
But thanks for playing, Dell, and don't let the market share hit you on the way out.

@Killjoy: Oh, and where can you get the Aspire One for these prices? Any place I've found prices 'em at $400 Linux and $450 XP.

@nogoodnamesleft: YMMV (your mileage may vary), but I have heard of people getting money back if the price of something on newegg drops significantly within 30 days. This means, of course, that newegg would have to change their price for it in the next 28 days.

@urbanturban666: It's a multi-touchpad (Windows, I don't think the *nix drivers support multitouch just yet), and it has "hotzones" if you want to set a corner for right or left click. I've found that I use that more than the actual buttons.

I have an Asus 701 bought right after they came out. While I'm dying for one of the newer ones, the eee is getting me through the two weeks that the Apple store is keeping my iMac, which has MULTIPLE things wrong after less than two years. I'm feeling much fonder of the little bugger these days - and less happy with Apple.

May as well throw that money out the window. Acer is junk. I've known quite a few people that have had trouble with Acer laptops. Apparently it's a real ordeal trying to get them to repair it when it breaks too.
