A First Look at USB 3.0
Posted by Mark Wilson at 6:40 AM on August 19, 2008
Now that Intel's brought together the world in a harmonious USB 3.0 standard, here's a first look at the new connectors brought to us by MaximumPC. Ten times faster than the old USB spec, USB 3.0 can transfer a 27GB file in just 70 seconds. Plus, with more "lanes" of data within the connector, new USB will be able to simultaneously send and receive information--that might not sound like much, but the old USB couldn't do so. This first shot is of the A and B-side USB connectors (the normal USB and the fat one often used in printers). This second shot is of the new mini USB:
Yes, it looks a lot like a tiny HDMI cord.
The biggest benefit of USB 3.0, however, may be the new power management options. First, USB peripherals in standby will no longer be drained of their power while periodically checking in with your PC. That means less battery drain for laptop users, and to make things even better, this more efficient communication strategy will be backward compatible to USB 2.0 devices as well.
The other major power upgrade is that there's a whole lot more running through the wire. The spec has been bumped from carrying 100 miliamps to 900 milliamps, meaning that we can expect faster charge times on USB devices along with less worrying about how many power-needy devices are plugged into our hubs.
For more of the nitty gritty on USB 3.0, hit up Maximum PC's excellent rundown on the new tech. [MaximumPC]

Doesn't that mean your hard drives have to sustain 385MB/sec? Even with RAID, that's not so easy to achieve.

@utube2007: 700 times longer than you spent reading the article. In other words, 700 seconds.

This rules!!! Release date? and do we (presumably), need to buy a pci-(e) card or similar solution to add this to desktop functionality for older machines? OR for ANY machines actually as it's so new......hmmmm.

@dsenier: You say that now, but once we have 500 gig HD TV Shows, it will seem slow again. What would that be, like 4320p?

Wasn't the great thing about USB 2 that it was backwards compatible with usb 1.1? And that was why, among other things, Firewire 800 failed?

B-side USB and mini USB look like the old connectors with a second plug added on. Not a big fan of new mini-USB, the old design was clean, simple and less fragile looking.

27gb in 70 seconds seems quick now... still the thought of syncing an ipod in under a minute does seem pretty tempting.
(yes i know that 70 seconds is longer than a minute, just some devices have less that 27 gb on them)

I would have been ok with something that wasn't so easy to plug in backwards, sort of like usb 1 and usb 2... so that when my grandma calls me telling me that her USB device won't plug into the USB port on her computer, I don't have to say "turn it around"...

@Xavoc: If you're referring to Firewire having better sustained speeds than USB 2.0, then yes. I remember reading somewhere that 3.0 fixed that problem, so it has steady, sustained transfer rates at *insert transfer speed here*.
@shaneschofield: To get the types of write times that are possible with 3.0, yeah. Its really more future proofing than anything...I'm sure 5 years down the road we'll have SSD's that can do that.

great so now I can theoretically transfer 27GBs in 70 seconds to a drive that has no hope in hell of writing that fast! I won't be rushing out to purchase USB 3.0 any time soon

900mA isn't a big whoop unless it's guaranteed per-device like USB 2.0's 100mA. In USB 2.0, a device connected directly to the root could receive 500mA (in order to guarantee 100mA to each device in a 4-port hub, including the hub itself).

I think USB is one of the worst designed plugs in all of computerdom. There's no common up or down or left or right. How many times have you tried to plug USB into a port only to find it was the wrong way? It's impossible to tell which way to insert the plug without visually inspecting both the male and female side (which is a sign of poor design)
And who came up with the goofy pitchfork symbol?

@jayhawk11:
They fixed that problem? That's funny, because from what I've understand, and what I have heard, that the very master-slave architecture of USB (1.1, 2.0 and 3.0) relies heavily on the host processor for arbitration. If only two thirds of the theoretical speed of USB 2.0 has been achieved, then USB 3.0 will be much worse. The only solution I can see is offloading that arbitration onto dedicated chip, however that will make it far more expensive for manufacturers to implement. The only other possibility is that Intel is relying on the fact that no HDDs (or other consumer devices) can currently consume that huge bandwidth, and so the problem won't become apparent for a long time.
