A Comprehensive List of Ultraportables, Netbooks, Mini-Notebooks, Or Whatever You Call Them
Posted by Mark Wilson at 10:38 PM on August 22, 2008
When the Asus Eee came out, the market was simple. There was only one tiny, cheap laptop so you knew which one was for you. That was less than a year ago, but things move quickly in the tech world. Now it's tough to keep up with the major brands offering mini-notebooks, let alone every no-name knockoff (where you may still find the better deals and innovation ). Luckily, Liliputing has created a comprehensive list of these machines so it's easy to compare stats and prices. And there were a few that even we hadn't heard about.
If you're willing to stretch your browser and translators to the ends of the Earth, you might be interested in something like the Sungjut TangoX, a mini-notebook with a touchscreen, modular Skype phone and DVI out. Or maybe you'd prefer the Raon Digital Everun Notebook, which is only 725 grams and packs an AMD Turion dual core processor instead of an Atom or Via.
Either way, it's a convenient chart to keep your head straight. Hit the link to check it out in full. [Liliputing]

@dallasmay2: no...one of the main purposes was the affordability of the machine. by that, MacBook Air is out, as is the ultralights made by Sony and others.

Do you consider the MacBook Air to be a netbook? I kind of do. It's not the same price (at all) but it does seem to have the same purpose.

I still prefer the term craptop over netbook or mini-notebook

I have a old Dell Latitude C400, it was replaced by the D400, then the D410, then D420 and now D430. Problem is the D4x0's all use a 1.8" drive instead of a 2.5" drive so capacity is limited. I'm needing a newer machine, something similar so ~3lb, 8.5x11x1", and uses 2.5" drives so I can have plenty of capacity (I currently have a 160G). I keep finding laptops that either don't have the capacity, or are bigger, or don't have the touchpad, or are not business grade. Any suggestions?

@dallasmay2: The Macbook Air is also too big. It's no different from a low-end regular laptop, aside from its thinness.
Changing the subject, though. I gotta say, my original Cloudbook has really become a little workhorse for me and I bring it with me to work every day. Putting XP on it really unlocks its potential.

@dallasmay2: It's an interesting argument. For our technical purposes, we'd cut it off because the screen is over 12 inches.

@dallasmay2: It's way too big and heavy. If there are full 11.1" Vista running, Core 2 packing laptops at 2.2 lbs (See Sony TZ series) with multiple USB ports and actual Ethernet jack etc. what is the point of that 3 lb Macbook Air? It's heavier and larger in dimensions than several other options out there (Lenovo X61s: 2.7lbs, Toshiba RX-1: 1.88 lbs).
As for these "netbooks" manufacturers should be ashamed giving us so called netbooks that weigh even a gram more than 2 lbs. These things should be 1.5 lbs maximum.
I'd even pay $800-1000 for a nice 9-10" machine that weighs 1.5 lbs or less. 2.4-3.0 lbs is a real joke for what should be a light compact browser and e-mail checker.

@sxr7171:
I'd argue that the point of the larger/thinner machines like the Macbook Air, Lenovo X300, Sony Z series, etc. would be to have a larger screen and full-sized more useable keyboard, while still getting some of the benefits of ultralight-weight and thinness. The issue with something like the TZ series is that although it's extremely portable, for some people the keyboard is a bit too small and the screen is a bit too small. The 13.3" machines seem to represent a middle ground offering more usability in the keyboard and screen areas while still maintaining some of the weight and portability benefits.

@nutbastard: I think that's wrong, since the girth of your thighs elevates the computer well above your crotch, and because of the length of your arms, is probably closer to your knees.

@Zadillo: You could argue that, but that doesn't make that category "netbooks".
Netbooks are defined by: PRICE & FORM-FACTOR...
The category you are talking about would be something along the lines of ultralight-subnote, which is already a pretty well defined category (based on models available, not the actual nomenclature).
If that's the kind of computer you want, go get one... Just becuase the typical definition of a netbook excludes them doesn't mean you can't/shouldn't get one...
So, to summarize: if you have fat fingers and bad eyes. Get one of the computers you referenced. If not, and you want to spend <$500 get a netbook.

Hmm, it looks like the EEE's lagging behind the other machines in price and performance. Kind of crazy how the Acer Aspire One offers all the capabilities of the EEE 1000 for $150 less.

Pretty funny that they don't show the OLPC XO-1 on the list, which is the one that started the whole movement after all. OLPC has soon shipped 1 million laptops already, which is more then most if not all the netbooks on that list. Also, you can Give1Get1 OLPC XO-1 laptops worldwide starting next month.

A friend of mine who was looking for small + DVD pointed me to ones from this company:
[jp.kohjinsha.com]
The JP site has an SX model with Atom 1.33ghz + 8.9", the SG site has one with a Celeron 800mHz and 7". Not too cheap though (around $1000USD).
