A US$15,000 Gran Turismo Pod: Still Cheaper Than Ferrari, Lamborghini or Porsche
Posted by Mark Wilson at 3:00 AM on August 27, 2008
We're not sure where every dollar went in this US$15,000 Gran Turismo Prologue Pod, but we can appreciate the integrated PS3, 40" screen, surround sound, racing seat, Logitech G25 wheel (which includes those fancy pedals) and stylish Plexiglas window. It's just a shame that the full version of Gran Turismo 5 isn't actually out yet, making this ubercabinet the world's most advanced demo kiosk. Still, here's another shot from the tech-fantastical cockpit:

Actually, i agree.. i'm one of the biggest racing game fans you'll get.. (No Nascar doesn't count as a racing game..)
And i have only ever bought one racing wheel.. inever bought the 360 racing wheel as it was too expensive, and too be honest, i tried it out, and it didn't really improve my lap times..

Can wey get a Poll, on how many of the race-game playing folks actually use a steering wheel and pedals as opposed to a normal controller? I have always enjoyed racing games, but i don't know if my times would be better with a steering wheel setup.

broke a lot of Ferrari traditions for a top-end supercar (Twin Turbo V8?!), was a direct response to the 959, should indicate just how amazing of a car it was.

The f40 was completely new design from the ground up, as you will argue the 959 was, but then why i ask you does it look so fucking SIMILAR??

Would you say that the beetle has no "soul"? They all look the same. How about the Mini? Same there. The Grand Cherokee? Owners would argue that one 'til the bitter end. When, from generation to generation, a particular brand of vehicle retains a good share of it's brand identity does it instantly become "soul-less"?
Arguing that a Porsche has no soul is like saying that the Universe isn't full of stars. Porsche is the only company that has managed to make the RR (rear engine, not to be confused with mid or mid-rear) configuration work; and work extremely well mind you. The cars look the same because the people who buy the cars want them to look the same. Remember when the headlight shape deviated from the perfectly round design to the funky "L" shape in the 996? Yeah, they changed it back because faithful Porsche buyers/owners made a big stink about it. Do you know why they made a big stink? Because of those same stubborn owners who love the car the way it's always been. That much love on the part of designers, engineers, owners, etc. doesn't usually go to a "soul-less" vehicle. You may not like 'em, and that's fine, but don't knock 'em.

Yeah, for the sake of your devotion to Porsche, i deemed it inappropriate to mention the Cayenne.. It is an AWFUL AWFUL car..
I've always thought, if you want a luxury SUV get an x5, nice 4.8 liter v8 is quick, but not stupid! i mean honestly, what's the point in saying 'my suv has the same chassis as a 911' when it weighs what, 9 tonnes?
We call Cayennes Footballers cars over here.. (Soccer)
How about the Boxter then? The nice little Palm Beach Dentist's chariot.. I know a lot of people like them, but it just says.. look at me! i can't afford a 911!! i mean really, you'd be better off with a mazda mx-5.. probably look less gay as well!!
And the Porsche Cayman? Mid Engined? Fantastic Handling? (Problem is though, If it where as powerful as a 911, around a track it would be twice as quick.. and Porsche knows this.. which is why there is no super-powerful version) It holds back.. i don't quite fancy it.. Which kind of puts to shame the Rear Engined design of the 911.. which yes, DOES work, but if you got rid of the rear seats.. [that i couldn't fit it when i was 11.. trust me i tried] and popped in a v8, instead of a straight 6.. and they'd have a fantastic car..
Oh, and i forgot to address the headlamps.. i am extremely glad they brought back the round ones..

@Sexpun Tocome: As much as you may not like the 944, I still think it was a better Porsche than the damn Cayenne and that new Panamera. So much for the sports car legacy. I get so freaking annoyed when douches in Cayennes are waving like, hey, look at me, I'm in a Porsche too, we're the same.

But i think agreeing to disagree, makes sense.. and i do value your opinion..
Was fun though, i always love pointless, hateful, argumentative, conversations, about things that BARELY relate to the initial topic.. LMAO
But can we both agree that the 944 was an awful bloody car? Apart from the wider body on the turbo, that looks alright..

Well good luck to you on that one, i however live in London and sadly have no use for a car.. :(
But that hasn't stopped me from being surrounded with car culture.. For example.. my dad owned a 911 turbo, and a Carrera 4 targa.. (Very Pretty car)
Sadly he has gotten rid of the Carrera 4, but to my delight, he's been driving an 07 Vanquish S for the past few years..
Which just SCREAMS on the Autobahn..
What'd you have before the 997? (Just doubting it's your first car) Mine was a VW golf.. xD which was sold to afford outrageous living costs of London..

@Daytodaz3: VERY true. I'll be going home after work to beat GRID for the 5th time with my Logitech Momo steering wheel myself. Love this stuff.
And I love the Porsche talk here. I've got to admit. I had a 944 in high school. Bought it for four grand from a neighbor. Fixed the ball joints and it rat like a dream. Handled like it was on rails and had enough get up and go in the normally aspirated version. For how antitraditional Porsche the 944 car is, it added a completely new consumer base for Porsche and provided MUCH needed capital while the company struggled in the 80s. I do agree teh Cayenne is an abomination though its ride is terrific and the Cayman is held back for fear of treading on 911 territory.

I really like off the wall exotics (like The Zonda or the aforementioned F40), RWD Japanese cars (like the Supra, RX-7, Altezza/IS300), and turbo four-bangers. Anything with a turbo four works. I love the idea that I can get 30+ MPG in a tuned Dodge Neon SRT-4, or Lancer EVO, or STi, etc, and still put some hurt on a C5 'Vette, V8 'Stang, or Camaro and they won't even see it coming.

WOW!! 30+ MPG... that's not bad for an SRT4, but you Americans (not in a derogatory manor) need to wake the fuck up!! We have Diesel VW polos that do 70+Mpg.. without any signs of a hybrid unlike the infamous toyota prius, that barely does 40..
And you still complain that your petrol is too expensive, when in reality, we pay 4$ for every LITER of fuel.. and that's the Cheapest price in the E.U..
Anway.. i'm no environmentalist.. i mean, dad's aston on a good day does 12.. :S not to mention he lives in Cologne, and does 160MPH+ on a daily commute..
You mentioned a lot of Japanese Cars there.. and no mention of the new GT-R.. Could this be a mistake? that thing is an absolute masterpiece!
And speaking of Camero's.. what'd you think of the new one? all of the renderings where all outrageous and muscle car like.. but i saw one up close a few months back, and to me.. it just seems.. Ordinary!! like compared to the new mustang and Challenger.. i have no doubt it will get beefier soon.. but as it stands, i'm not a fan..like i think the wheel arches need to reach further into the body, and have some nice arch flares you know? nothing outrageous.. but like a beefier take on it, wouldn't have been a bad idea.. i often see this with a lot of renderings.. and whenever they take to the streets, they seem tame..
FUCK i'm rambling again..
@GeekyNerdGuy:
I like how you've taken suspension into account.. as i've seen a lot of hefty Stangs, with leaf springs...

Not a huge Cayenne fan, but I do like the X5 indeed. The Grand Cherokee, OTOH, is merely OK, but underwhelming and very old school -- a bit typical of what US Auto did well, and what it didn't do well for a long time. I bought a new GC V8 in 97 and kept it for 10 years -- finally got tired of 9+ mpg in Chicago, and got a BMW 335xi, which actually gets 27 mpg on the highway -- amazing to me at least.
On the subject of quick and not stupid, I firmly believe there is literally nowhere within an hour of a large city like Chicago that you can truly open up a car and drive like a mad person -- for longer than a couple of minutes. Our roads simply aren't built to do that around cities. Of course I did get a $600 speeding ticket earlier this year, so maybe it's best that I _not_ drive like an idiot ;-)

@Sexpun Tocome: Trust me, I'm with you on the "wake the fuck up" issue. I'm probably gonna be crucified by my fellow Americans for saying this, but I'm happy that gas prices are rising. The magic $4/gallon price seems to finally have "woken" people up as SUV and truck sales have plummeted. I just feel bad for the the folks that already have 'em and can't sell 'em 'cause they're worth squat now.
Love the new GT-R. I didn't want to run down some huge laundry list of the cars that I like/love, just a few to get my tastes across.
Love the Camaro. The new 'Stang is nice, but not my favorite. I hate the new Challenger. An SRT-8 is slower than my SRT-4 in stock trim. That's what you get when you make a 4000+ lb. car I guess. It's just a bloated turd IMO. Also the styling is far too derivative for my taste. I know the Mustang and Camaro are too, but the Challenger is goes too far with it.
My Bachelor's is in Automotive and Industrial design. I could go on forever about styling specifics with you, but I think we're already too far off topic.
