3D App Converts iPhone into Window to Alternative World
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 10:10 AM on August 23, 2008
If you liked Johnny Chung Lee's Wii headtracking tricks you will love iHologram, a stunning iPhone app that makes the screen look like a window to a real, parallel dimension. While it seems like magic, it uses anamorphosis, a very simple painting technique that has been used by old masters since the 15th century, mixed with the technology in the JesusPhone.
Created by David O'Reilly, iHologram combines anamorphosis and the iPhone's gyroscopes to achieve this awesome visual magic trick. Anamorphosis is a way to draw things distorted so, while watched at a certain angle, they pop out of the 2D surface as if they were real.
David's application assumes a constant viewing angle of 35 to 45 degrees, which is the usual angle when anyone watches the iPhone screen. Knowing that angle, the application calculates the orientation of the screen relative to the viewer using the iPhone's motion sensors, so when you turn it around, the 3D world perspective gets skewed accordingly.
As you can see in the video, the effect is almost perfect, with the character popping out of the screen and the world he's walking on receding into a deep space. [Ismashphone]

There's a new dice rolling app, Mach Dice, on the app store that uses a similar trick. It's a bit rough around the edges, but it's cool that as you tilt the iPhone this way or that, the angle of view on the dice actually changes, giving the illusion of a real 3D object being looked at.

@doobiebros2two:
it's not possible because the iphone doesn't have a means to tell itself that it's being rotated on a flat surface. the accelerometer doesn't handle that.
Adobe After Effects FTW.

Posted 3:26 AM 24/8/08
This guy should come clean. He's either motion tracked the phone in After Effects or is simply playing a video in the device and timing his motions. The Accelerometer can't detect rotation of that type. It relies on gravity and the table is flat.
The reflections are done in After effect by simply setting the blending to "screen" mode. The cheat becomes really obvious when he tilts the phone and the brightness of the white doesn't change as it would on an LCD panel.

Yeah, an effect kind of like this is no doubt possible but there will likely be a lot of drift as it would have to determine orientation entirely by recorded acceleration with gravity being of no use.

He came clean. From his website:
"The iHologram has become one of the All time most popular videos on Vimeo in the space of a day, and is currently on the front page of almost every technology site… I'm getting way too many emails about it, so for those who had to know:
The iHologram app was not real. It was an illustration of an idea I had which I believe could work with the technology (combining anamorphosis and motion sensing). Unfortunately I'm just an ideas person, I can show how things should look, but I'm no hardcore programmer.
I'd be happy to collaborate with a developer or studio who want's to make it happen, I'm bursting with ideas for the interactive world, but right now all my attention is on filmmaking.
My aim with this was to tackle the problem of 3d viewing in an original way using current technology, not fool anyone… so for those who doubted but still supported it, respect. I hope it inspires some talented programmers out there."

If you would look the ipod is at a slight angle so in this case the accelerometer would do the job, because if you rotate the ipod on a sloped surface the accelerometer can detect change.
But you are right, the accelerometer cannot detect horizontal rotation, the ipod would need a compass to do that.
