In the U.S. it will come bundled with a Dual-Shock SIXAXIS and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. It hits in November in time for Xmas at US$499, as the high end option coinciding with the US$399 80GB "Core Pack" announced at E3, adding room for Sony's video download plans no doubt. The console itself appears to be the same as previous PS3s. The U.S. version comes with a voucher for the PS Network game PAIN, but the Euro 160-gigger includes €70 of free "downloadable content" vouchers. Full presser to follow:

Additional $100 per 80GB. I suppose Sony needs to recoup the R&D cost on PS3 one way or another.

what i want to know is whether the CPU and GPU is 65nm in this version. rumors were that they were going to shrink the GPU around this time.

@man in gauze is king ramses II, silly.: Don't, you have backward compatibility, even if it's emulated, and this one doesn't. The new one is just a crappy, gimped 40gb with a slightly bigger hard drive.

I have had a 160GB PS3 since launch. Way to catch up to me Sony! Looks like I am going to have to bump it up to 250GB. That will show them!

Well, shit. Now I feel rather silly for getting the 80GB one.
Then again, the hard drive is easily replaceable, and as for DLC...well we'll see about that.

Sweet, the release of this bundle will hopefully flood the market with used copies of Uncharted, bringing the price down so I'll finally be willing to buy it.

Too bad about the backwards compatibility. I'd rather just get one of those and put an HDD I bought myself into it. Good thing it's not in a godawful proprietary case like the XBox.

Great Sony, now the EU users can fill up the hard drive with nearly unlimited content. Oh wait, there's no content available...

But I already own an 80GB PS3, so I'm set. Loving it!

Oh good! It comes packed with the SIXAXIS! I can't stand the rumbles. I love how Sony is offering the choice to consumers of having rumble or not for consumers, like me!
totally kidding, btw. want my PS3 to come packed with a DS3 this x-mas!
What's up? I can't just disable rumble in-game? And why are controllers $50+ nowadays. Cuz it's wireless? please....

I have had a 320GB HDD in my PS3 for some time now....and a 1TB External HDD with movies on it. Plus mine is the original 60GB with BC and memory card slots which actually have come in handy even though I didn't think they would ;)

@Mr.SithNinja: Its called a lot of people don't want to hook up TWO PlayStations to their TV, maybe a 360 or a Wii as well. Not to mention DVD players and other stuff.
OR
PS2 owners are trading in their PS2 system towards a PS3, and that alone makes your entire PS2 library completely worthless and unplayable once you make the jump to the PS3.

@Mr.SithNinja: Which is exactly what I did, I purchased a used 60gb. Some people don't want 2 consoles, especially the last gen one. It's just much much more convenient to have 1 machine.

@dgelwin: No back compat = NO back compat for PS1 or 2 games. Are you saying that you have these games and no PS2 to play them on? Are you incapable of owning both a PS2 AND a PS3? Would it violate your rental agreement or lease where you live? Why do people always throw that out as an ultimatum? " No back compat = NO SALE!! " "It's gimped blah, blah, blah". The sad fact is that FULL back compat means having the PS2 hardware AND emulation software (as featured in the original 60gb). They HAD to take it out to reduce production costs to be more competitve with the 360 in that respect. If it is THAT important to you then you should hunt down a used 60gb model and be done with it because I serioulsy doubt that they are ever going to put FULL back compat back in.

I've been stuck taxiing on the runway for a half-year now, reading up, comparing specs, trying to keep up with the various PS3 models, and waiting for the right combination of factors and timing to make a purchase. 160gb or not, with fewer USB ports, a lack of media slots, and no BC (not even emulation??), I'm perplexed by what Sony's doing in that game traffic control tower.
Where's the high-end option? If I'm gonna plunk down the bills for this + additional controllers and games, I want something with stay-power. Sony's slowly eroding away all the features that made the PS3 really special in the first place, aside from the processors and Blu-ray.
Strangely, it seems like the old 60gb is the high-end model, and the price is rising on eBay. 60gb unit + several DS3 + new spacious HD = $???. I'm frustrated that I didn't just buy one of those a year ago. About the only thing that would convince me to buy a new unit is if they offered a model with more RAM. There doesn't seem to be any indication that they'll offer anything new for quite a while.

No comments on the pricepoint? I don't think what they've added overcomes the price barrier they've stayed married to.

@Akibake-: I could care less about Cell. I just want it to do what the competition can do and do it better. Sadly, Cell has not shown me that it is better than whatever is in the 360. If MS could get that RRoD stuff sorted once and for all, they'd win me.
I personally don't like the PS3 because of the jaggies in games when compared to their 360 counterparts and the fact that 360 games run smoother, look slightly more aliased, and sharper.
My Wii will have to do for now. Links Crossbow Training is rocking my world STILL. And this game is NOT that easy. Just trying to get 20000 points on the levels is a little nerve racking, unless you know which pots/buckets contain the magic golden ball that gives your 700+ pts.

ALL PS3s are backward compatible with PS1 titles!
It's only the PS2 titles that are hit or miss depending on which PS3 iteration you have.

I bought a 320Gb drive for my PS3 and I'm very happy about it too. It's great for movies especially HD content.
The only bad thing (and its a very bad thing) is the PS3 backup and restore tools will backup and restore EVERYTHING. I don't need to backup my pictures, music or movies, just my purchased game downloads & saves. I hope Sony fix it so backup be applied selectively, e.g. to game saves, downloads but leave my personal content alone.

@Mr.SithNinja: Wow! Talk about a fanboy. I have read the article. The fillers don't really interest me.
Nothing against PS3, as I've always been a PS owner, but two games that are a year old (by the time this game comes out, which would be comparable in price to those in the greatest hits list at a discounted price) and rumble controler? BFD.
I suppose you haven't read the article between the lines.
It would be more of a value proposition to include two DS controllers, instead of 1, and 2 more USBs and SD card reader.

@TheFaze: You see how much sense that makes? A PS3 that can play only PS1 and PS2 games. Who's smart idea was that? I'm sure more people want their PS3 to play PS3 and PS2 games over PS3 and PS1 games. PS1 games can be downloaded via PSN. PS2 games? Geez.
If Sony really wanted to cover more costs for the PS3, they would have released more PS1 games on PSN and recouped the costs through digital downloads.

@Mr.SithNinja: Troll? That's rich. Just because you own everything does not make you a non-fanboy. You can be a fanboy of everything you own. Otherwise, you wouldn't have purchased them. You're an indiscriminating fanboy. But, I'm not here to be "snarky," which I wasn't. It was a show of genuine disappointment. I've read the article all right. You, on the other hand, may have read it without comprehension.
Have you recently purchased a $80 HDD? They're really cheap.
What Sony is doing is called pricing-to-market . Adding a bunch of parts and selling the package for a lot more than the sum of its parts isn't value.
Especially with Wii and 360 in the lead, the logical thing to do would be to lower the price point to draw new PS3 customers. However, Sony is a business after all that has been getting hammered on the bottom line of the income statement. Well, it's well known that PS3 costs more to produce than the selling price, so where can they make up some of the money to lower the net loss? One solution is by selling a "new" package and charging $100 more at a marginal cost increase.
Then again, in this current economy, who can really justify $500 game system and think that that's value? If you do think that you're really out of touch with reality.
If my original short statement seemed snarky to you, then that's your problem and lack of understanding other people's positions. I know what I mean without having to write an exposition.
