1500mAh Solar Powered Charging Case For the iPhone 3G
Posted by Sean Fallon at 8:40 AM on August 6, 2008
Yes, yes...we have heard plenty of complaints about iPhone 3G battery life, and there are already several solutions like battery packs and rechargeable hip holsters hitting the market. However, the new case from Mobile Fun has one advantage over all of these other devices--it can be charged by the sun.
The case itself features a sizable 1500mAh battery pack that they claim can be charged by the sun in as little as three hours. It also has a mini USB to USB cable that allows you to charge from your PC or hook up other gadgets for a quick shot of sweet solar juice. The case is slated for release in August in both black and white versions for around $54. [Mobile Fun via SolarFeeds via EcoGeek]

people keep complaining about the battery life... how often are you NOT near a usb port during the day?

@mildretard: LoL, one of those in my living room right now. Not my cuppa, but lol nonetheless.
So.... I wouldn't be caught dead. I'd rather renew my TerraPass.

@barwe: yeah, charging your gizmo with renewable energy is pretty prickish.

All that will do is give iPhone users another reason to get that phone out and act like a prick.

@moonrock: the dock connectors on the two phones are the same. The old phone probably won't fit in as snugly since the 3G is a little chubbier.

Does this mean we have to go out in the sun? Yuck.

@PaaatrickBabyBoy:
I know right? Just have a charger at home and a charger in your car and you're set!

Great idea, but it's damn ugly.

@PaaatrickBabyBoy: I'm a photographer and often spend my weekends shooting soccer tournaments, leaving my car around 7:30am and not getting back to it until 8 or 9pm. You'd be surprised how fast that battery can drain when you're coordinating shooters for each game, reading emails, signing up parents for our mailing list, showing parents our website and previous tournaments... especially when your exhausted ass forgot to charge the phone completely the night before.

I think it looks pretty good, for a Hasbro Evel Knievel Junior Radar Detector ca. 1976.

Maybe a tad more aesthetic stitching. Didn't these guys look at mobo or blu cases? They look amazing, but this guy... Hugh!
Love the concept though.

@jarque: Not true I've heard, the firewire prongs have been taken out or something I'm told..,and I know it is USB, it spose to be some prong going into the iPhone...This is why my old Ipod Car charger/radio tuner will tune but not charge..or so I'm told by an Ex coworker at AT&T...meh
Anyone know better?

Ew, guys. Why would you show a picture of that model? Why not show a picture of the sleeker black model with top clip? I'd probably get one if a) it actually charged a first gen (varying reports on this) and b) it was available in the U.S.

too bad the case covers the moved light sensors. Looks like it was designed for the 2g iPhone.

@darthsaber10: I was just about to say that a black model would look much better. Thanks for saving me the effort of making a redundant comment.

@darthsaber10: Totally. The black case on their site I would go for in a heartbeat. Much more my style and a little more inconspicuous
