120GB Zune Makes World Debut Courtesy of FCC
Posted by Jason Chen at 1:37 AM on August 19, 2008
The FCC's test report—found by I Started Something—for an upcoming "Portable Media Device with 120GB Hard Drive" by Microsoft is the 120GB Zune, and was first tested June 19 of this year. What's this mean to you? Not a whole lot, since this Zune is the exact same size and shape as the old one, except with increased storage. It's likely that the 120GB Zune will be the new 80GB Zune later this year, assuming that Microsoft is going to push out another yearly update to their players and software suites. Or, it could just be a new size to go along with the old sizes. [I Started Something]

@Rabid Penguin: Granted, however sometimes features can be a powerful lure. A quasi-computing doodad that can access the internet can persuade one to forgive the relatively paltry storage. A 32GB device that does a lot more than my 80GB iPod sounds dandy, at least sometimes.
The hard part is justifying tossing aside a perfectly operational iPod Video to spend $500. :S

And it's going to be the same size as the old Zune? That's not bad. I had bought the 80gig iPod when it first came out and it was massive compared to the previous iPod. That thing was like a brick. I mean, if you stick your USB cable to the end of it, it's like walking around with a cinder block with a key attached to it, like they give you at a gas station to get into the restroom.
@Kaiser-Machead's WALL-E fetish: The iPod touch only has, at most, 32GB and costs around $500... I'd rather have the "lower-end" model with a lot more room for music.

I'm still waiting to see if MS comes up with a higher-end model to rival players like that Samsung YP-something and the iPod touch.

i love the zune, but that form factor has to go. the thumbpad is absolutely perfect and a joy to use, but those buttons are not easy to push, and the whole unit is like the size of a brick. i wish they would round those corners and sacrifice a bit of screen real estate to make it more 'pocketable'.

Why does that Zune look so smudgy? I have a black 80GB (about 70GB more than I needed, so I won't be getting the 120) and it's matte finish looks beautiful and perfect. Please don't tell me they're making the new ones shiny.

@oneclick: I've got little more than 10gb free on my 80, and I'm planning to pack it full with series and stuff.
More space is always good, I wonder why they didn't go for 160gb to rival the ipod though...

I'm hoping this means 120GB and 250 or even 320GB iPod's. Please happen.

@spuntyb: I agree. I think it would be just dandy if they smallened the screen without lowering the resolution. That way we wouldn't lose any vital pixels, and it'd be more portable.

Looks cool. If they decide to add some fucking Mac support, maybe I'l get one if I ever exceed 80gb.

@kylo4: Yeah, totally. The 160gb iPod classic's been out for a year now, and MS thinks 120gb can compete? wtf? 320 would have made way more sense than 120.

I'm still in shock that you people have 80gbs of media..
Of course, if you add in all the movies, TV series, AND music on my PC, it would probably be upwards of 100gb..but the movies aren't even shrunk for the Zune's resolution!
How long does it take to sync your 160gb iPod or 80gb zune? Days? Yikes!

LOL! 320GB ipod? Are you insane? The 160GB ipod isn't selling very well as it is. People simply don't need 50,000 songs and if they are a DJ they generally have a laptop with 500GB or an external drive. Why the hell would you make a 320GB one? Anyway I'm glad they kept the form factor, I just hope they release a phone since I'm on the fence with the iphone.

I don't have 80gb of media. I have nearly 150gb of songs (23,000), plus several hundred more besides of movies.
@resiroth: Look, just because you're okay with your limited amount of culture and appreciation of music, don't say "people simply don't need 50,000 songs." You'd be surprised how quick 50,000 songs goes.
@aR-Tard: It takes about five minutes to sync up my iPod now. The first time I synced it, I just started it going before I went to bed, so I have no idea how long it took.
