10 Years of the iMac: A Visual History
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 6:41 AM on August 16, 2008
Tens year ago today, the original Bondi blue iMac went on sale. In more ways than one, it marked the rebirth of Apple into the one we know today and the dawn of the Jobs + Ive era. Not a bad legacy. To celebrate, here's a visual history of the iMac through ads, starting with one of the original Jeff Goldblum-narrated commercials, which somehow even seems smarmier in retrospect. Which design was your favourite?
*Not technically an iMac G5 commercial, but the closest I could find for the white flat panel iMac--let me know, and I'll put it up.
I'm kind of a sucker for the Pixar-lamp-style iMac G4. [Hat Tip to Cult of Mac]

Also, as far as design goes - I have a little soft spot for the original G3 (being the first I used and all), I love the look of the G4 flat panel (but from a service standpoint that thing is fucking hellspawn), I love the original G5 from a service standpoint (3 screws at the bottom and access to EVERYTHING inside), and then I love the new one best from the "pretty for my home and photo editing" angle.

There was no checkbox in the poll for the eMac I bought when I was in college. It was a slow piece of crap paperweight anyway, as was any Mac before they came into the 21st Century with Intel.

I loved the iLamp design. The swivel head is awesome. I would totally buy a iMac G4 if someone modded it to have the internals of a new Intel iMac or even the older iMac G5 innards. I'd pay up to 1000K for that baby - oh and must be 20" LCD. Just pretty.

Anyway, I forgot about the originals, cause I never had any use for Apple anything. Now that I'm stuck using a Core 2 iMac at work, this article is kinda interesting to see. Not a fan of the form factor but it's sure better now than it was!

@EnochLight: well i actually love the intel chips, i have there 8 core in my mac pro right now, and it has tons of power.
the powerpc chips werent bad, just not very marketable, 400mhz ppc = 1.6 ghz pentium 4, but that was too hard to explain to basic consumers. Also every try magnifying a dock with a ppc, anything less then a g5 and it will slam the cpus.

G4 iLamp remains the nicest design, but I feel like they killed it off quicker than they did the others. Is it just me? BTW, that has been the only Mac that nearly converted me purely on aesthetics. In fact I will go out on a limb and say it's my favorite post-revival Apple design besides the G3 iPod.

I like the Swivel G4 iLamp one. We had one at the studio I worked at for the last two years and I myself have had the intel Chipped Flat White iMac since 06' It runs great, but I really must say that swivel screen design is damn hot and it should be re-vamped and brought back out, the aesthetics aspect of it of course :P

I genuinely loved the skittles ones, namely because that was the first one I actually got. One of my friends had the Bondi Blue one as soon as it came out, I thought it was the coolest fastest thing ever. I would pass one in Sears and always stop to play with it. I still have my Blueberry one packed away somewhere.

@EnochLight: Actually, yes - IBM had given up on making a next-gen PowerPC chip that would be power-efficient enough for a Apple's portables, opting instead for the metric assloads of cash Microsoft and Sony were handing them to design the chips that power the XBox 360 and the PS3. So Apple went Intel instead.
At the risk of sounding way too fanboy-ish, I'm quite impressed by the fact that Apple had maintained x86 builds of OS X all along "just in case" - it was a pretty high-priced insurance policy that saved their butts in the end.

I have a white intel one (I still see no reason to upgrade to the new ones), but I have owned a g3 eMac iMac(very briefly), and the gooseneck. I bought the g4 gooseneck for my ex, but in the seperation I recieved custody and used it for a while. I sold it, mostly because I couldn't justify owning five computers, i kept my intel iMac, macbook and my powermac g4 server. The g4 iMac and the PowerBook that she broke got the ax. Bought it used for $700 and sold it two years later for $450. The damn PowerBook was allllll screwed up and I still got $750 for despite the fact it was 1ghz and I sold it after I bought my 2.1 ghz Santa Rosa MacBook for $1299. Gotta love how macs retain their value.

Where's the "you guys are fanboys" option in the poll :P
I never really liked the iMacs. If I had to choose the lesser of the evils, I would pick the "lamp" one or the "tin can" one. I liked the swiveling that the G4 could do, and the current one looks the best of the bunch (even when the others came out).
My least favorite is the first one. I never liked it, ever. It was slow, ugly, and the spinning color wheel thing only seemed to aggravate all of these problems. Besides that, it is and was a hideous thing to look at.

I'm using the G4 ilamp right now. It's my only computer. I've had it for like 6 years and while I've thought about getting another one, I just can't justify. I still get compliments on it. I know it'll soon become un-upgradable, but for my admittedly low-impact use, it's perfect.
My only gripe: The all-white and clear-plastic keyboard quickly looks like shiiiiit.

@Shadowlayer: See my earlier comment on it. The G4 design was beautiful, but to do any service on it at all was like pulling teeth without novocaine during a root canal. There was only one accessible RAM expansion slot, and if the RAM on the inside went out, they you'd have to deconstruct the entire thing just to get to it. The original G5 was designed exactly the opposite way, where with the loosening of just 3 screws, even the end user has access to absolutely every internal component in the computer.

I had to vote for the "Flat n White" since the question was our favorite "design," but functionality-wise, my fave has been the "iLamp." It's a little funny-looking, but I love how easy it is to lug around when you need to, and the way the neck bends so easily to accommodate both adults and children with nothing but the simplest effort.

My absolute favorite, hands down, is the iLamp iMac. Years later, it still looks amazing. Sure, it was a bitch to upgrade (that base was surprisingly heavy as shit!), but man, did it look awesome.
I'm happy with the way the iMac has evolved since then. They've gotten lighter, brighter, faster, and easier to upgrade in the revisions since the iLamp model.
As far as the original iMac goes, however, I absolutely HATE those models. I have so many bad memories with those Macs, with their god-awful OS 8 and & OS 9 installs. I know so many people who turned into absolute Mac haters as a result of using those systems, and I can completely understand where they come from. It's too bad, really, since the latest flavors of OS X are completely different from those "Classic" OS's. (AKA: They actually work)

I really, really, really think the iLamp was the pinnacle of lame. And I'm a total fanboy.
The skinny, final-PPC based iMacs were mighty sexy, but it's nice that they've finally departed from the white plastic.
I have a massive soft spot for the original iMac housing, only because I still own and love an eMac, which has a very similar case, modded slightly to hold a 17" CRT.

@badhatharry: Haha. I meant $1000. Hell I'd even pay $1500 for one, if you could mod it for Dual Core running Intel processors, bump the HDD up significantly - and it all works together?
I don't need Leopard, but Tiger is fine.
Wow, that'd be a dream and all that on a 20" G4 iLamp? I have yet to see one.
The most I've seen the iLamps go for are still somewhere around 600-800 dollars (i only dig the 20" widescreen one...very limited run!) on eBay and thats a lot for the old specs....especially since a new Tin Can iMac isn't that expensive now...
