10 Things We Want to See in the iPhone 2.1 Update
Posted by Adam Frucci at 1:18 AM on August 1, 2008
The iPhone 2.0 software is pretty good. We like the App Store a lot; it adds a boatload of new functionality to the iPhone. But it's certainly not perfect. Having used it for a few weeks, we've discovered a number of little quirks that we really hope are addressed in the upcoming update. From bugs to missing features, here are ten things that would make the iPhone a much more attractive device.
1. Make it Less Crashy
The iPhone with 2.0 software feels a little... buggy. It'll randomly crash or slow down to the point of unusability until you restart every few days with normal use. That's not right; this is a mobile phone. It shouldn't feel like an unstable computer.
2. Fix the Keyboard Lag
A good chunk of the time, typing on the iPhone keyboard is made even more difficult due to the lag involved. Typing quickly means the letters pop up four keystrokes after you hit them. Make the keyboard move as fast as the user can type.
3. Fix Safari Orientation Switch Lag
Sometimes, Safari takes its sweet, sweet time switching from portrait to landscape when you turn the phone. This should feel almost instantaneous, not something you have to wait for.
4. Make Backing Up Faster
For some, "backing up" whenever you plug in your iPhone can take upwards of 30 minutes. What is it doing, exactly? The iPhone sync should be near-instantaneous when you plug it in if you aren't moving large files back and forth on purpose.
5. Make it More Efficient
The 3G mode is a battery hog. You can turn off 3G completely, but if there was an option to only use 3G for certain programs, such as Safari and Maps, it would go a long way towards making this a phone you aren't afraid to unplug in the morning when you aren't planning on getting home until very late that night.
6. Video Recording
This could easily be implemented, as we've seen from apps available for jailbroken phones. What's the holdup?
7. Wi-Fi Syncing
We'd love to have our iPhone sync automatically when it hits our home Wi-Fi network, from app data to photos to music to contacts.
8. Leave App Icons in Place After an Update
When apps update, their icon gets picked up and moved to the very bottom of your last screen. Why? When you updated four apps at once it then makes you awkwardly move them all back to where they were. Just leave them in place.
9. Make Moving Icons from Page to Page Easier
Moving an icon from one page to another takes multiple tries and, unlike most things on the iPhone, feels awkward and user unfriendly. Make this less of a pain.
10. Copy & Paste
Duh.

1) I would definitely like to see an address linked from the iPhone Calendar to Maps.
2) Phone numbers in Calendar linked to make calls such as is other applications
3) Adobe Flash please

UNIVERSAL portrait/landscape!! For people like me that text quite often, or write long emails, that wide "safari portrait" keyboard would help un-cramp my hands!

I agree - all the above-mentioned bug fixes are critical. The crashing is getting a little annoying (though I've had crashing problems on all my smart phones that weren't Palm OS, so I'm used to it). On the battery life issue, I don't know how that might be fixed, but it would be great if there were a double-click option for a pop-up menu accessing just the WiFi and 3G on/off buttons. MMS and video would sure be nice in the new feature category, and I'll add to the wish list the ability to share Map pins.
I can't say that I'm unhappy at all with my iPhone. In fact it's only because I use it so much and it does so much that I have all these little problems with it. Looking forward to 2.1 for sure, though I expect it will be less than I hope.

If they could add these as well then this would be perfect-
1-MMS
2-Video Recording
3-A2DP Stereo Bluetooth (if possible with the current hardware)
4-Syncing of Outlook's tasks to ur iphone
5-syncing notes
6-Some camera stuff like filters and things like that, and maybe some zooming in
7-Alright, here's a brilliant idea- When you put the phone in silent mode (I love that little silent switch, much better than my previous phone), it should silence the whole entire phone's activities, not just the ringer, this way you can still use apps like games and programs and even youtube without disturbing others or you can use these features in the middle of class without having to lower the volume every time.
8-Some form of voice dialing without running any 3rd party apps
9-Wireless sync after 1 minute of inactivity when docked. The Zune does the same thing, and also has a feature in the settings to wifi sync on demand, but it shouldn't automatically sync when not docked to save battery, just like the zune did.
10.The ability to put the screen off during a speakerphone call, because sometimes you aren't using the phone for anything other than talking and you're using speaker, but you don't want to hit anything on the phone, so it owuld be best to have an option to put it into sleep without hanging up the phone on speaker.
Well yea, if apple took this list I just made and the list in the story and maybe some other stuff, they should release it as a really big free update for iphone users called iphone update 2.5 (hence the HUGE amount of functionality gained in one update, but it would take a while and probably not be free, because of course it IS apple!)

Great list. But seriously, I'd be ecstatic with just #1 at this point. Mobile Safari is better under 2.0 (for me) but it still crashes out too often. It is actually more like Safari on Windows than Safari on Leopard in that regard.

Adam, people are buying the iPhone 2.0 as it currently is. Moreover, Pogueman and Goatberg have overlooked every flaw. Finally, Apple gets no money from the new AT&T contracts.
Remind me again why Apple should get an update out ASAP.

these are all a lot of my own frustrations.

To that end, anyone else get kicked out of Safari randomly? That's tremendously annoying.

@krispykrink: I had a Windows Mobile phone once, and that had background applications running all the time and there was no way to stop them unless you went into the Task Manager and quit them. It was a both a memory and battery hog.
There has to be a way to let the user select which apps they want to run and keep running, and which ones can be closed when you leave the app.

Posted 1:53 AM 1/8/08
I think it has to uninstall and reinstall the apps during the updates -- hence the reason they get plopped back at the end. I doubt that's going to get fixed.
What I hate the most is when a page in Safari just overloads/crashes it and it just shuts it off. THAT is annoying.

@Jolyrogr: You have to go to settings and enable Caps Lock.
How about giving us the option to change the alert sound on my calendar? Every other phone in the world has this...
Of course MMS, but I think Apple is too (stupid and) stubborn to understand why we want this.
How about making all links clickable?! Too often I get a link in my calendar, and it isn't clickable. I also have yet to receive a 'photo message' on my iPhone (I only got it a week ago) but apparently you have to write down the link that AT&T sends you, then type it into Safari... again, why can't that be clickable?

All great suggestions. Definitely hating the page organization thing. I tried to keep games on one page and news on another, etc and that lasted through one app update when I realized it was never going to work.
Am I the only person who's had their phone for a year and hasn't even once wanted to copy and paste something? I hear plenty of complaining about it, but I just don't see myself using it. I keep trying to imagine situations (I want to copy an email and paste into an sms to someone!) but I've never hit upon one I actually care about.

They really need to allow background applications to run. Maybe the hardware is too weak and would shit the bed if they allowed it, I dunno.
Reason being, To Do apps. WTF is the point of a To Do list if it can't remind or sound an alarm to tell you that you have something TO DO?

Too bad Apple doesn't care about what users want and absolutely none of those features will likely make it into the next update... or the one after that... or likely the one after that either.
Let's face it... Apple gets by on releasing as little as possible in as long as possible. This is how they keep getting users to pony up the money for a "new" iPod/iPhone that has a handful of "new" features that should have been in the last one to begin with. They make some great products... But they clearly do on purpose to control what they give us to keep us all coming back on a consistent basis.

Your forgot the most important needed improvement: Only allow those who have paid for and used an app to leave reviews in the App Store.
Or at least, allow us to physically harm those reviewers who simply say "I didn't buy this, but it sounds like it is too expensive." Sounds like a good add-on feature to the Remote app.

Even if they charge 30 cents a message like the verizon fuckfaces, its still MMS.
I dont have any of the iPhones existing features on my shitty W385 besides the whole phone part and I still can MMS. (It was 30 bucks too)
Also, on a side note, stop charging so fucking much for text messages. I send/receive a total of 50 and get charged 10 bucks (20 cents a message), but the 10 dollar plan gives you 250 (4 cents/message). Cant I spend 2 bucks and get 50 messages? It is sofa king overpriced

Moving icons from page to page could very easily be accomplished by allowing you to drag them down to the little dots at the bottom.
The group of dots would grow in size when you got near them making it easier to pick one. Then you would merely hold the icon over one of the dots for a second or two and the phone would switch you to that page so you could then drag the icon to where you want it on that page.
Similarly, you could drag an icon and hold it between two dots and you'd get a new page inserted right where you want it. Currently, if you want a new page between two existing ones, you have to drag all the icons after that point over a page which is a PAIN IN THE ASS. ;-)

Wow my jailbroken touch sounds like its more stable then 2.0. Although when it crashes anymore its kind of an ordeal to get it back up.
Some of the things on the list are in conflict with each other and probably part of the reason that you don't see the features more often. You want more effective battery usage but wi-fi syncing as soon as you walk in the door would kill it.

That list is really good and sums up my biggest complaints well. I feel like I'm back to using Windows Mobile!!!
Two other things I'd really like to see implemented/fixed:
1 Number of key presses it takes to switch between mailboxes - make tabs at the top to filter different mailboxes on/off or do *something*. This is one of the main reasons my boss returned his iPhone (as minor of a thing as that is, for a constant e-mail use it is a large pain)
2 Ability to edit a contact anytime you're viewing it - Often times I'll be looking at a contact that I navigated to from somewhere other than the contact list and I want to change something... can I do that? Nope. You need to close that app, open the contact list, find the contact (after various lags), then edit. Let me edit it anytime I'm looking at it.

I add my vote to most everything above and add the following which may make too much sense for Apple, but when I get a text message containing a phone number, let me click and hold down on the link for options like "Add to existing contact, Add as New Contact, Call" rather than having to call it, hang up, then add as a contact.
C'mon Apple. You are SUPPOSED to be known for your intuitive interfaces... prove it on the iPhone please!

They (Apple) may be waiting to incorporate a major fix for a lot of poor 3G users before they release this update - that being of a vast amount of users complaining about poor reception and dropped calls while on 3G, thus making users simply turn it off. Thank goodness I never upgraded from my original iPhone, because the sheer volume of users affected speaks to quite a major issue and annoyance:

Oh yeah, improved ipod features as well would be nice. Meta tag editing as mentioned above, along with a search like the contacts app and the ability to make smart playlists on-the-go. Another little thing is the ability to view a visualization or something instead of album art / track list. Especially for tracks that don't have art. 90% of the real estate is taken up by nothing (when in the app).

The MMS thing could fairly easily 'fixed' by AT&T until Apple implements the functionality for the iPhone. Send pictures as a picture message is not hard to do from the iPhone. Every carrier (I'm pretty sure) allows you to email to an address and have it pop up as a picture or text message on their phone. T-Mobile, for example is @tmomail.net (not sure what it is for other carriers, but it can be found with a little research). I send my friends picture messages like this from my phone all the time via the existing email capabilities. Maybe it could be helped by AT&T having some kind of lookup somewhere that if you email to a phone number@attmms.com or something and it sends it to the other carriers.
Receiving messages is another story. AT&T already sends you a text message saying that someone sent you a MMS and you can go see it at viewmymessage.com and entering the id and password. First off, this site RARELY works. I think I've had it work like once. AT&T needs to fix that first. Then change the message so that is says 'www.viewmymessage.com' instead of just 'viewmymessage.com' so the iPhone will see it as a URL and change it to a link automatically (already does that for other text messages). They could even go a step further by making it so that the link itself has the id and password is embedded in the link so it just takes one tap to go to the site with the picture.
If they did that, AT&T could by-pass Apple's delay in implementing MMS and please their customers until then. You could send MMS via the iPhone using the existing email functionality, and receiving them wouldn't be half as painful to try and see them, and all of that without having to rely on Apple adding the functionality. (Please let someone with some pull at AT&T read this)

Good starter list, Giz. iPhone 3G looks like it was rushed to release and is not as stable of an OS as the initial release. It still blows me away that some of the simple things that should be mandatory in a mobile phone of this caliber are missing. MMS? Video recording? Notes sync? C'mon, those are 3 things that should have been included in the 2.0 OS. Basic required features that are still lacking.
I realize the focus was all on the AppStore and developers in this release, but even that is severely lacking. All of these limitations and requirements are insane. Also, I applied for the developer program the day it was announced and I still haven't been accepted. Nice. Glad my killer iPhone app will never make it to the awesome new AppStore and make Apple gajillions of dollars. WTF?
I'm not sure if it's 3G mode or bluetooth, but battery life on iPhone 3G is absolutely dreadful. I used to be able to go 2 days at least without having to re-charge the phone and now I'm lucky it gets to the end of the day without going into the red.
Copy and Paste? Don't get me started... only one of the top 5 requests of iPhone since DAY 1 and still nothing. WTF?
AppStore: new apps are really slowing down, and how many to-do, flashlight, 8-ball and bubble apps can the world possibly need? Is anyone else really tired of the lameness of the apps now? The initial joy of the apps is now gone... everyone has Monkeyball and the other cool "look at what my iPhone can now do" apps. What's left is a lot of crap. The "newest apps" list on the iPhone and iTunes Store rarely updates, and when I do see updates to certain apps in iTunes, I often don't see them update on the iPhone. The new apps list is always the same apps it seems -- a list of apps that Apple evidently wants people to see, not the apps that are really new. Where are the killer apps like integrated voice dialing? Skype? Slingplayer? These are apps that should have been release from Day 1.
GPS feature: really really cool stuff. Balls-on accuracy, but where's an app to take advantage of it? There's no turn-by-turn Garmin/Tom-Tom-like navigation. Location based apps in the AppStore are very lame... with the exception of one (Yelp) but it's lame because you can't contribute via iPhone, only desktop.
Not sure what's going on here, Apple... but I'd give iPhone v1 10 stars and iPhone 3G 5 stars.
If there's one -- just one -- thing that better be added immediately, it's MMS. The lack of this feature in iPhone is just inexcusable. The "workaround" of giving me a txt that tells me to go to a website and enter some huge number is simply a joke. Not only that, but every time I get one I have to tell the sender that I can't view MMS on my iPhone. They always laugh, followed by how pathetic my new expensive phone is that it can't do the simple features of a $20 flip phone (like video recording).
'Nuff said. Make it better, Apple... PLEASE.

Besides the obvious bug fixes needed (lag everywhere!).. Add:
1. Edit a contact anytime you are viewing a contact. Sometimes the edit is there, and other times it isn't. Annoying!
2. Come up with a way for apps (and e-mail, sms, ...) to queue up online tasks while offline. So I can send a txt while on the subway, and when I pop up from underground and it finds a signal, that message is sent. Blackberries do this very well, Apple, not so much.
3. If I'm trying to make a call, and there is no signal (or wasn't the last time it checked) check for a signal immediately. Again when coming out of the subway, I go to make a call, and the phone just fails. I end up doing an airplane mode switch x2 to force a search immediately.
4. Have apps separate out their stored data.. Application Code, Data, Cache.. Data is synced, Code is only updated if there's a new version, Cache is for things like map data.. Cache can be deleted if the app isn't running and space is needed.. but otherwise should be reasonably kept (but NOT synced!)

Having 3G enabled only for specific applications would indeed solve one problem but also cause another: enabling/disabling 3G requires restarting the GSM radio chip and re-aquiring network connection which would cause significant delay each time one would start an 3G-enabled app. Really bad if you would like to check something quickly using an app that you normally use for large data transfers.

I have an ipod touch, and it is quite annoying to have to sync entire folders. If I want to just add one photo from my other pc to the ipod, I lose all of my other photos because it can only sync entire folders, so if that photo doesn't live on the 2nd pc, it is gone.

@Shabbis: we get unlimited TXT and MMS through our AT&T plan, so it's not a money issue. It's a technology issue. Everyone who does NOT have an iPhone can send MMS, including my daughter's piece-of-shit free flip phone. If there's something important that she wants to send me, there's no way I can view it. The rest of the world can play MMS, but no--not the most technologically advanced iPhone.

My list of updates/add-ons would include this:
1. COPY & PASTE
-No explanation really needed, buuuut... My god, even the Sidekick can do this. Yet an iPhone, in it's 2nd Gen... Still can't? Epic Fail.
2. LANDSCAPE KEYBOARD ON ALL APPS
-Why is landscape keyboard only available for use in Safari? Can someone, anyone, tell me why it's not available in SMS and E-Mail??? It's there to make typing easier... Yet it's not implememented into the biggest typing apps on the frickin' phone. Epic Fail.
3. MMS
-Almost every cellphone in the world can do this... Even cheapo-freebie phones given to you when you sign up for a contract... Yet again, the iPhone can't send or view them normally. Epic Fail.
4. VIDEO RECORDING/CAMERA ZOOM/FLASH
-Still can't record video when almost all newer high-end phones can. Still can't zoom... And Apple still hasn't added Flash. Gotta love those dark pictures... Epic Fail.
These are my biggest problems with the iPhone that I want fixed ASAP. They're already working on the background notification... so I'll leave them alone on that.
@generalassembly: It's people like you that copy ideas instead of innovate and invent. What's ridiculous about the request? If you can put a cd into iTunes and rip tracks right into your library... why is it such a stretch to be able to do the same with a DVD? It's the same concept and Apple could make it happen if they really wanted to. There are already 3rd party programs out there yes... But as the other commenter stated... If its Apple and "it just works" it should be incorporated directly into iTunes. It's a great idea, simple as that.

Because it is legal (for now) to rip CDs.
It is probably legal to rip DVDs in general.
It is NOT legal to circumvent DRM on CDs or DVDs, which you would need to do if you wanted to rip them to a different format. Most CDs don't have any. Most DVDs do.
And, yes, its stupid, and you can buy/download programs that can do this. No, no one really gets the legality about it. I don't think Handbrake or MacTheRipper have been sued over it. Yes, its a sham. Personal use, etc.. Down with DRM, yadda yadda.
Just saying you are delusional if you think APPLE is going to implement this, and open themselves up to the murky legal ramifications. They allow CDs because there isn't the DRM issue around them.

I think there's some weird legacy data that causes the crashes. I got sick of them, so I rezapped my iPhone and did not restore from backup but started from scratch. You only lose old SMS message, web faves and bluetooth pairing. Since address book, email, calendar and other syncing are really on your computer preserved. Since this, absolutely ZERO crashes. I can't stand not being reminded of a text message or voicemail. If you don't hear the .5 second notification you got a text message, you could go hours without getting that message. It's just annoying that you walk away from your phone for 2 seconds and have to wake the phone up to see if anything came in while you were away.
It's even worse for my wife who leaves the phone in her purse while at work, and used to listen for the reminder, but now has to dig the phone out of her purse and check it every hour or so.

@don_moron: I couldn't agree more, sir.
Pretty please. With sugar on top. Treat users as educated adults and give us the option to turn off the auto-proofreader.
Alternatively, maybe if there was a safari-esque portrait keyboard for SMS/email we would spend more time hitting the right keys, and less time opting out of every stupid "alternative spelling".....

Oh, Giz. How do I love thee... This is my first post so first let me gush. You convinced me to abandon Verizon (and a horrible Razr) for the iPhone. I haven't looked back since. However my phone has crashed 5 times (one of which was so bad I had to wait for the battery to die to restart it), I have found a crack in the case (black) and I cannot tell you how disappointing the keyboard lag has been. I think you guys hit the nail on the head with this top ten list!

As a business user who frequently gets mail from Outlook in all it's poorly written html glory, i often find that any message I get from an Outlook user that contains an image zoomed out so that the whole image will fit on the screen thus making the text unreadable. I think one of the greatest things about the iPhone vs. the Blackberry is the email client's ability to read full graphic full html mail without doing all the ridiculous reformatting that blackberries and treos do. The only problem is that sometimes Mails scaling algorithm could use some tweaking so that it zooms to fit the text on the screen and scales any images appropriately. I'm not sure what the problem is with Outlook generated mail but it's really annoying.
An alternative fix would be to simply let me change the screen orientation in the mail client, instead of just safari.

Stop ripping out the EXIF (specifically GPS information), and stop resizing the photo, when sending them via email. And pleeeeease let me send contact information via SMS. Patrik

2.0 sucks. It is buggy as hell, my phone is sluggish, the UI doesn't respond after input... Ugh. I want apple to fix it. NOW.

@Sean Robertson:
Great Idea about moving icons down to dots. How about a screen in iTunes where you could MAP OUT your apps on several surrogate iPhone screens, so you can see them all at once, and drag and drop where you please. When you sync, BOOM!, you're done.

Am I going to be the first one to request a non-laggy update of the Contacts app? My contacts take 6 seconds to load sometimes and scroll like they are having a seizure for the following 2 seconds. I know I'm not the only one. It's super annoying considering how on a phone you need to get to your contacts multiple times a day.

Having lived with 2.0 on a first generation phone for awhile now, I have to say I have been disappointed without how much my phone has slowed down. The touch screen is not as responsive and when I do select something, there is a definite lag before the next screen appears. I tried wiping out some songs to make more room on the drive - didn't help. I hope Apple can speed this thing up!
My top pet peeve that was addressed in 2.0 - a dedicated Contacts button on the Home screen. Woo hoo!

Hey guys, I was listening to a TWIT podcast, and they had a great idea to an easier way to move around icons. One thing you can do, is take one thing out of the dock at the bottom, put it at the end, then put the application you want moved forwards (probably one you just updated) into the dock, move to the screen you wanted, then drag it out. Do this as many times as you'd like, then at the very end just go back to the last page and put back the app that you took out of the dock originally. Hope this helps people, it sure helped me!
