Zune Guy Buys iPod classic, Hell Freezes, Apocalypse Nears!
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 7:05 AM on July 26, 2008
No, we are not kidding: the infamous Zune Guy, that dude who got three Zune tattoos, and then decided to get rid of them, says now that he avoided buying a Zune last time he was at Best Buy and got an iPod classic 80GB. He openly admitted it in the Zune Scene forums.
And low and behold, it's a black iPod classic 80gb. When I was in Best Buy I looked around at the other players, and they sold no Creatives in the store, so the only choices were iPods, Zunes, Insignas, Samsung and Sony. So when looking at which had everything available in store (I despise UPS) I went with the iPod. I more than likely will regret this decision but I will let you all know down the road. I do like the weight and feel of the device thus far.
At least he's looking at the alternative, but at this rate he's going to end up with a lot of scars. I wonder how many iPod owners would change to Zune to see. Are you an iPod owner? Would you do it? [Zune Scene]

A few people in my office won't buy an ipod for the express reason there is no inbuilt radio. One of the other staff has the radio remote, and it adds bulk to her daily bicycle ride to and from work (for fitness).
I personally don't need it, but a lot of people like to hear up to the minute news, commentary and other radio like additions including the music they like on their radio station.

We have four iPod Nanos in my house (or 3 since once got smashed). As much as I love the iPod, in the last week I've been thinking about making the switch to the 8GB flash Zune. It's a combination of annoyance with iTunes and loss of the old beloved Nano form factor. With the Zune I can have the form factor I like with the bigger screen and hopefully less application frustration.

I'm quite happy with my iPod and see no reason to switch.
I've had two iPods, a 40GB B&W model that lasted me 3 years, and my current one (a 60GB Black Video) which is just over 2 years old.
Considering how much effort I've got into converting videos to the iPod format, and making custom playlists for it, and how much I like the sync between my iPod and iTunes, it'd take a hell of a lot to convince me to switch.
I'm happy with my iPod, and I don't desire an MP3 player to be anything more. So if my iPod died today, and I was in the market for a new MP3 player, I'd probably just pick up another iPod.
I know it, I'm familiar with it, and all I'd have to do to get it going how I want it to, is plug it in and wait for it to transfer.
A new one has the benefits of
-Being everything I want in a music player
-Just plugging it in to make it work(no new software to install)
-No learning curve
For me to switch, the Zune, it'd have to make me want something in a music player that I don't have now, and at the moment, I can't think of anything that I'd want that I don't have. The wireless sharing things seems kind of cool, but I don't know anyone else who has one that I could share music with that way.

@RudeandRude: Here's a tip for you iPodders out there that want to scroll quickly through movies. Press the center button once, then use the clickwheel to scroll through the timeline. This works a lot faster than FF.
The Zune fastforwards quicker than the iPod if you hold the button, but I find that the iPod is better at allowing you to pinpoint moments in the video, because you can "crank" it, so to speak.

The only reason I bought a Zune was because it was dirt cheap on the Woot.com sale. It's actually a good device, and solid all around, but its level of simplicity isn't keying into my interests. I found myself liking the notes and contacts function, which I use more often than I thought I would. UMS capability came in handy on numerous occasions, and I don't have to use VMware or dual boot to use it. If I format it for Windows, it's virtually system agnostic.
I gave my Zune to dear ol' Ma who won't care for the stuff I do, and she loves the thing and uses the radio a lot.

I have a Zune and I like it. I use it to download radio shows that I miss while I'm at work. The reason I like it so much is because it fast forwards EXTREMELY quick. I tried an Ipod and Samsung, but it takes 3+ minutes of holding down the FF button to get through 2 hours. With the Zune, it takes about 30 seconds max.
It works fine, no problems. Its just really bulky.

Sorry about the double-post. I was so enraged with the prospect of someone buying the iPod classic that I forgot to answer the question.
I would heartily change to a Zune from an iPod classic.
The classic lacks the polish of the iPod video 5.5 or the zen-simplicity of the ClickWheel 4G. Moreover, for its size, the damn thing should have a radio built into it. It's not hard and every other PMP has a radio built-in. It's poorly engineered and reveals the age of the iPod platform.
The only thing stopping me is my library, 95% of which is in AAC 256 format, and of those, ~500 being protected.

What the hell?! The classic is arguably the biggest piece of crap in the iPod line. The UI is laggy and button presses regularly don't register. Coverflow is useless and the hierarchy simply can't handle 1,500 artists in a usable manner.
FWIW: I just got my "replacement" iPod classic back from Apple, shipped to me from Shanghai as is standard procedure for all things from Apple.
Also, word of warning - Apple support is some of the most asinine, tits-on-a-bull useless "support" I've seen from a tech company. Someone with Six Sigma training needs to give that company a once-over.

The Zune has potential, but it's tied to Microsoft's crappy Zune store number one, number two the thing is slow and bloated.
Try playing music on it and then pulling up a slide show, it chokes and stutters. Never had a problem with any of my iPods.
As far as the Zune, um....ipod...well....Zu-pod guy, who really cares what he buys or uses. He only got the tattoo to try and get a few bucks from Microsoft me thinks and now that they won't give him another tour of HQ, he's moving on.

I have a 5.5g iPod but am getting a Zune in a few weeks. The battery is fading, you see, as it usually does 18 months after buying it. Playing around with all the options, the Zune is the best HDD MP3 player on the market. The iPod Classic is slow and buggy. However, if the iPod touch came in bigger capacities and cost less I would get one of those. They are very nice and the best all-around MP3 player.

As a Zune owner, you guys can have him.
The iPod Classic's not bad (although Coverflow is a fine example of Apple eye-candy for the sake of eye candy - its functionality is worthless.) But the UI on the Zune is absolutely top notch and FAR more versatile than the iPod classic's. The Zune software's improved considerably with recent updates, but still needs some tightening up and better integration with things like Xbox/MediaCenter. A lot of people obviously love (or at least are entrenched knee deep) in iTunes now so that's still a major draw I guess.

Wow the Classic Hate is staggering. I have an 80 gig classic-- at the time I bought it my 21 gig collection could not be stored on a touch. This is my second ipod-- first was a 3G (touchwheel with the 4 buttons). It was good for 3 years (with a self-done battery replacement); however its biggest issue was losing bookmarks in audiobooks-- a real pain in the neck. I really like the classic-- perfection on audiobooks & podcasts, perfectly adequate for watching dvd rips in small doses, and since the firmware upgrade the UI is fine (although I agree coverflow is useless, and the fact that you can't get a fullscreen of an album cover is staggeringly stupid). I would not have bought it if there had been a 32 gig touch available, but it's usable and in my opinion it is the high point of the old form factor. I'm sure that fat slob will enjoy his more than a crappy zune.

That circle behind his head... I keep seeing it as a douchey pony tale..
I like my Zune, the device is fantastic. The actual Windows-side software is poop and I hope someone gets an alternative firmware on it soon (Rockbox or otherwise, I want SOMETHING).

@OMG! Ponies!: Honestly, what would you expect him to buy when Apple does not offer any of their other players with even close to that much available space. Until the touch is available in 40GB or higher, and at a decent price, the Classic is the best way to go.

3 iPods (3rd gen 10GB, 5th gen 60GB, 1GB Nano) and 1 Zune 80GB.
Hands down, I like the Zune more. The 80GB form factor is nowhere near as bulky as the 30. Screen size is an obvious plus, and in my experience, the battery on the Zune seems much more resilient. And the casing on the Zune is like tank armor compared to the butter-soft plastic of the iPods (I've treated every iPod I've ever owned with great care, and they still scratch like hell). I've also had two faulty HDDs on the iPod 60GB, requiring replacements from Apple.
Still, the Zune lacks certain higher end functions that the iPod covers. Things like volume limits (God does the Zune need that. My cat stepped on my player the other day and cranked the volume on me. Ouch), automatic playlists (Recently Added, Recently Played, etc.), system integration (I can plug my iPod directly into my car and get a harddrive read, but for the Zune, I have to go through the AUX port). These are all sore spots for the Zune.
If the Zune had the aftermarket support of the iPod, I'd be a one-player man. But the reality is that the world is much more ready to work with an iPod right now. So, it's Zune at work, iPod in the car, either/or with the Xbox 360/home audio.

I'd use both. I have a silver 80gb Classic at the moment, but I'd buy a Zune and carry both. Zune for videos, iPod for music. That way I could carry a full 160gb of content all the time. I know it'd make more sense to just get a 160gb Classic in the future, but the Zune has a big sexy screen. As soon as I see some Mac compatibility, that'll happen.
