Zing Laser Brings Laser Cutting Goodness to the Average Guy
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 1:00 AM on July 13, 2008
Fans of laser engraving can now prettify all their stuff with Epilog Laser's new Zing Laser, a machine that's roughly about the size of a bulky office scanner. The Zing Laser, one of the first fully functional low-cost laser etchers on the market, has 25 watts of cutting power and can engrave designs into wood, acrylic, plastic, leather, cork, glass, treated metals and more.
When hooked up to a personal computer, the Zing is recognised as a printer. Put whatever you want to etch on a 16 by 12 inch engraving area and then use Corel Draw to calibrate where the design will go before starting the cutting process. Get to customising every Mac thing you own for US$7,995.
Here's a video of an iPhone getting carved and the laser cutting through wood.

Um, the specs are 25 watts, but the printing on the machine says 35 watts. Looks like Iran did it to us again!

@SinAmos: uhhh no sir. That craftsman special you speak of can damage alot of gear if the right amount of preasure is not used. This is excellent for this as well.

For 25 bucks you can get a metal etcher at Sears. This is waste of cash.

@Monty: ...Or you could charge other people to engrave their shit. After 80 items, you'd get a clean $100 a pop, all profits!

You can take your items to a professional engraver at just about any mall (who likely uses a machine exactly like this) and have your product engraved for anywhere between $10 and $200 bucks, depending on the work being done.
If you assume $100 each (which is extremely conservative), you would need to engrave over 80 items before this pays for itself. So, if you are seriously considering this, you have a hell of a lot more gadgets of value than I do.

@bryanmccormick: Funnily enough, I don't actually own a Mac product. It just seems like everybody's aaaalways laser etching their Macbooks or their iPhones or that kind of stuff.

@Monty: But if your just looking to get your investment paid off just go to your local Mac shop whether it be an Apple store or just a store that specializes in Apple products ask them if you can leave some business cards and a small sign. you'll have it paid off in no time with very little work. Just a thought. sure you may need to rent space or the store may want to take a % of sale but if they take a % then they are doing the selling for you too.

are you guys missing the point??? this machine is for guys who make trophies in their garage or small wood shops that otherwise could not afford to invest in a larger production machine.
Sure...maybe a rich guy mite buy one and play with it for a month, and some lucky sap will find it in a garage sale when he is done with it in a year or two, but i seriously doubt that's who they are marketing to.
whoever buys this will more than likely have a plan to recover the cost of it..and wont buy it just to label their personal gadgets

I would have to agree that if you are willing to spending 8K on this to etch a few toys you clearly have more loose cash than brains.

btw, why does the company think women couldn't run this machine and sells them the epilady instead?

The pricing on this thing falls into a gray area where it's just cheap enough for someone with a ton of extra cash to spend, but not quite powerful enough for someone wanting to use it for real commercial applications.
If you're going to be making money off of something like this I'd recommend paying some more $$$ up front or renting a better machine that can get the job done faster. This thing looks a lot slower than the $200,000+ machine my dad used to have, man that thing was FAST.

Narcissism has encouraged me to try and get everything engraved from my local 'things remembered' store.
[they engrave (computer guided laser) most everything]
Experience has taught me that with most things being as disposable as they are, particularly gadgets, I've shot myself in the foot by ever engraving any single one.
A sticker will do from now on.
But for the trophies, frames, personal mementos this may be suitable though I would have to argue you are far too motivated to be getting a personal device..I suppose it's best for mom&pop stores to help bring in business.

I got my iPhone laser engraved at an Epilog booth and I now regret it. It would be a cool addition to a design or print business as one more product you could offer. If 25W was powerful enough to cut through thin wood and plastic I would have tons of fun making puzzles and mechanical structures which could be sold to pay off the printer.

I've seen some of the more expensive Epilog laser engravers and they're very nice. If this is pretty much the same, only smaller then it could be worth getting.

Hell... I'd also engrave just about anything. Computer case, cell, DS, PSP, PS2, Olde Gameboy (give it some sweet illuminated art and custom buttons). But not just geek stuff! Pencils, business cards made of wood, stapler, cook a super rare steak, keychains, leather book covers.... actually that's probably about it.

versa laser has been around for about 5 years selling this exact same thing. I don't want a business but I wouldn't mind having it pay for itself. I thought in a pinch I could setup in a mall kiosk...
