Xbox 360 Live Dashboard Getting Motion-Controlled 3D Interface
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 10:40 AM on July 2, 2008
Kotaku's pirate ear to the ground is picking up from sources that the Live dashboard will be updated with a spanky new interface option: what Crecente says is a Minority Report-like 3D interface that'll make use of that long-rumoured motion controller. (In addition to those 80 functions that didn't materialise in a Spring Update.) The "motion controls will allow users to sort of slide through the different levels of this floating menu system." Sounds slick, it was taking me too long to flip through all those blades. [Kotaku]

Hello Everybody
Just wanted to share my new experience.
If your Windows XP denies to start due to an error corresponding to lost HAL.DLL, invalid Boot.ini or any other critical system boot files you can fix this by using the XP installation CD. Simply boot from your XP Setup CD and enter the Recovery Console. Then run "attrib -H -R -S" on the C:\Boot.ini file and remove it. Launch "Bootcfg /Rebuild" and then Fixboot
Regards,
Carl

Personally, I would like a 360 that would first do the basic functions I ask it to do, like work, not work for 2 minutes before dozens of small artifacts fill my screen and a high-pitched screeching noise comes out of my speakers. And this is only 2 days AFTER I got it back from Microsoft for repairs for the RRoD.

@MagnoliaBoy: There is a third-party Blu-Ray player you can get to use along with your XBox 360. It's called a PLAY5TATION 3. It's great. When I want to watch a Blu-Ray movie, I use the PS3. When I want to play a video game, I use the XBox.
Everyone wins.

Nice,
Xbox live needs an update to remain competitive and ahead of the other consoles in terms of the online experience.
Looking forward to this.

@Unknown2U: I have had 2 friends red-ring already, and 2 that are still having problems after sending it in to repair (one can't even play games, the other's is can't even play demos). They are the only people that have 360s that I know personally. One got their 360 9 months ago, another 5 months, another 3 months. Quite frankly, the only thing stopping me from purchasing one is that I hope it isn't dead in a week. He wouldn't be able to make such a sarcastic remark if Microsoft had actuallu fixed the problem... I'm still waiting.

@drewls: Listen, friend. You're the one who started talking about walking around town "shooting your sword" and having full "life containers".
I was just reminiscing about how much I like strolling down the lane with my French bulldog, Moblin, solving math problems and fighting crime with my Triforce of Power. Personally, I don't want your "frown" anywhere near my Triforce.
Now if you don't mind, I need to get home. My raft has arrived.

@Metkis: I've had mine since shortly after the system launched. The only problem I had with it was the power supply dying. It only died because I used one of those third party add-on fans (the Nyko one) and it screwed over my power supply. When I started noticing problems I unplugged it and found the part where the power supply went into the intercooler had melted. I got a replacement supply for it, ditched the fan, and it's worked like a champ ever since. Personally, I think most red-ring issues are user error, usually by improper ventilation.

@Gann: I live in New York City. I can't walk around town with swords, boomerangs, bombs, or large amounts of gems. I tried setting fire to the trees in Central Park and spent the night at Riker's Island. When I shivved some lady's pug, the ASPCA came after me. I thought the carriage horse's were firing flaming blades at me and hauled ass.
It took some time, but I'm beginning to accept that I am not Link and I do not live in "The Legend Of Zelda".
Now, if it's all the same to you, I have a giant mallet and the construction site across the street is just begging to have some flaming oil barrels tipped over.

@robinandtami: I'm agreeing that the console needs ventilation like any other, but even at 16% of the more than 11.6 million sold, that's 1,856,000 consoles. That's 1.8 MILLION. Do you think all of them kept blankets covering their 360?
No, that's the point, the system is still faulty and still red rings (such as my friend PJ) even under the coolest ventilation.

@HawkSkater0: Agreed, and so would my friends. Adding functionality isn't going to help if the console doesn't function. I don't hate the 360 at all, in fact, I'll certainly agree that it has a terrific lineup of games and effective internet services; however, if I'm paying ~$400 for a console with a great library of games, It'd be great to play them instead of sending my investment away in a white box for weeks. I understand I shouldn't base things on personal experience, but with what I've seen (every one of my friends with 360s ending up suffering 'the wait' not only from red rings but from not being able to read disks even after cleaning and from graphics of any game being distorted beyond recognition/ not playing at all) I should speculate if it's really worth it at this time. Again, I'm not hating on the 360, I'm saying it's a major issue.
A sad truth is that my friend Dan got his and 3 months later it 'ringed. He then sent it in, got it back and the faceplate wouldn't stay on nor would the disk drive open without a little cooperation (. 6 months from then it just gave up reading disks and he's sending it in again.

@HawkSkater0: The 360 failure rate has dropped from 33% to 16 %. The 16% figure represents all consoles since launch, which indicates the newer consoles have about a 2% failure rate. The 360 never has been, and never will be, an electronic device that you can just stuff inside a cabinet and expect it not to overheat. It, like many other electronic devices, requires plenty of good ventilation. My Onkyo receiver gets so hot, I fear that if I stuffed it away inside a cabinet, it would cause a catastrophe on the scale of Chernobyl.

@robinandtami: maybe i just have high standards and expectations from my gadgets. I am used to my gamecube, i could drop that thing off my tv stand and expect it to still function.
To me 16% failure rate is 16% too much. I want my gadgets to have a 0% failure rate. I don't hate the xbox. The xbox is great, i love the games on it, but i am so sick of sending mine in to be replaced.

@Griffehpoo:
You're way off base. Apparently you think the majority of Xbox owners don't know how to plug in a console and insert a friggin' disk. I went through five of these worthless pieces of junk, we're talking red ring of death minutes after I turned on hte "refurbished" model sent to me by MS. Oh - and they did offer me a free gift for my patience (which had been used up). A free wireless controller. That's great, right? Problem is, not only is the controller used but it has ground in dirt in the buttons and along its seams. This is the company you're dealing with. They don't give a shit about their customers.

@HawkSkater0: I don't know what to tell ya man. I have two 360's and I have always kept both of them on shelves with nothing on top or to the sides of them. Neither one of them ever ringed out UNTIL, I put one inside the entertainment armoire in my bedroom. It ringed out the second time I used it there, after working flawlessly for almost two years out in the open. I sent it in, and MS sent me back a brand new unit with the falcon chipset. Adding my two 360's together, I have almost 5 years of 360 ownership with only one RRoD which was clearly caused by lack of ventilation.
I own all three current gen consoles,360, PS3 & Wii, and I have to say I'd rather have to go through a RRoD every 3 months than go without my 360. My PS3 is only useful as a blu-ray player, and my Wii is only fun when I have company.

@HawkSkater0: my take on this xbox-bashing party is this: My launch console went nearly 1 year before RRoD, i sent it in my second one went for another year before disc read error. but each time i got my console back within 3 weeks. the way i see it, yea MS rushed through to deploy the console, but IMO this isnt more than an annual tune-up. the newer consoles have falcon, and whatever GPU installed to lessen the heating costs. whats done is done, move on! stop gripe-ing and enjoy the games.
