WSJ: FCC to Rule Against Comcast on P2P Blockage (But We're Still Screwed)
Confirming what's been hinted at by FCC Chairman Kevin Martin since like the dawn of time, the WSJ is reporting that the FCC is going to rule on Friday that Comcast violated federal policy by by stalling BitTorrent connections. From there, it gets ugly.
The FCC decision will basically tell Comcast to stop blocking BitTorrent and to disclose its practices to consumers (both are sorta moot points). It'll be challenged in court, which will take a long time and be messy, and either confirm or (most probably) deny the FCC's power to tell ISPs what to do.
The end result though, and what we're already seeing, is that ISPs will move away from network filters and get into data caps--which are FCC approved. Or at least, not disapproved. So, we've won--Comcast is getting thrashed--but we really haven't. [WSJ]

All the $$ the spent on the Wii to re-gain the company's negativity is a poof poof ....while some morons are getting lured into that Wii-stupid lock-up deal, the company is getting hammered big time ....
I hope *all the "KumKast" tech support are reading*

As a side note: I think that internet connectivity in the home is going to take a turn much like home phones and cell phones once did. Home phone companies were charging small fortunes for basic features that you would find in an ordinary cell phone now-a-days.

@praevalesco: Well played sir.
Yes indeed with the new onset of technology such as the technology Verizon will roll out in 2010 I think we will see a change in the management and plans that comcast and other high ISP's will offer. I mean why pay ridiculous prices for internet only at the home! That's so 21st century.

I call for more regulation. I know that regulation is a last resort, and has a lot of issues, but what the ISP's are giving us, and where they're taking us is just no good for anybody. This is quickly becoming a "trust" situation, just like what we have w/ oil companies. Not every company needs to make lots and lots and lots of money, by manipulating the market, and screwing the people.

I am sooo disappointed with Data caps. I don't care how much it costs me, but if it rolls into canada, I will switch to any ISP that offers unlimited caps at a reasonable price, even if it means a slower connection. Seriously, who wants to count how many megs they use a month so they don't go over. I don't care if its even a 1 tb cap, I hate the idea of it.

From what I've been reading*, Kevin Martin is the "Telco Tool" that will do anything to subvert, misguide and undermine the CableCos. *dslreports dot com

By the time data caps come we will likely have other options for ISP's. The 3G and beyond world will force Comcast and TW to stay honest.

Here in Canada I already have a 60GB cap and it only goes to 95GB with the maximum service. This is exactly why a download service for multimedia will never work.

*sigh* I have GOT to find a different provider than Comcast. I can't stand having to pay $60.00 a month for cable that I only use as a high-speed internet connection.

You know this wouldn't be so bad if Comcrap didn't have exclusive access to certain Cities. If every ISP was everywhere, then I wouldn't care if Comcast was bandwidth shaping because you would have an option to switch to another broadband provider. I'm glad I have Verizon and COX here--I've only had 1 issue with COX where they imposed an ad page by switching DNS servers... I fixed it though.

We can only hope that by the time the case is finished we have enough multimedia download services (Xbox, netflix, iTunes, etc) to make such data caps completely impractical.

@kylo4: 60 gig seems really low- a couple of ditstros- telecommuting and gaming walone would suck that up for me

how are you supposed to know your usage? I can tell on my main desktop and monitor it - but what about usage on my ps3? my wii? my GF's machine? my psp? my umpc? my laptop? unless they specifically have a way of alerting you to your usage- it is bait and switch to do otherwise since usage is pretty well unknown to anyone unless you are specifically monitoring it- if they have a meter that allows you to monitor your usage it would be fair, otherwise I see a pretty big lawsuit opportunity. Not to mention a lawsuit on the side of media and content providers who have based their business plans on non-capped numbers.

The path of the BitTorrent man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil cable men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, uploads the latest films the day after release; for he is truly his brother's keeper, and the finder of lost trackers. And, I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to throttle and block my brothers! And, you will know my name is H4x0rE1337 when I lay my vengeance upon thee!

FIOS may not be any better: Verizon does not block P2P per se, but the router firmware is crippled via a very small NAT table.

dude, comcast tech support has nothing to do with it, take it out on the corprate office who feels the need to outsource to third party companys and contractors instead of having in house techs and phone operators.
have you ever worked a tech support job? as that agent on the phone your are parcticly in the dark and have no power concerning these things.
