WowWee White Tiger Cub Robot Is Unboxed, Unleashed
Posted by John Mahoney at 12:30 AM on July 23, 2008
WowWee, makers of fine programmable robotic toys, is stepping back a bit with the "Alive" series of animatronic beasts sporting realistic skeletons that move according to how much attention they're given. You can't load custom Java code onto this White Tiger Cub though, so if that's your thing, stick with the RoboSapiens or, perhaps, an equally cuddly Pleo, which has its own upcoming SDK. The cub does have plenty of movements in its repertoire though, and it's kind of creepy to watch.
I'm a sucker for animatronic noises. They always make me laugh for some reason.

Wowwee, just give me my friggin' Rovio.
In the mean time, can someone skin this thing? I want to see the terminator version.

Oh my. :o
WowWee put that out?
I can usually find something to like in almost ANYTHING they make, but Jebus man, the freaking EYELID actuators are louder than the voice box, which itself reminds me of early speaking robot descriptions by Isaac Asimov!
It's not lifelike, but does seem to be an excellent parody of this type of toy, even if it's unintentional.
My guess is they'll get real inexpensive real fast.
Real sorry.

I hear it's prone to grabbing Pleo by the neck and dragging it offstage...

I remember as a child hearing that by the time I was an adult there would be a robot in every home. Oh how far we've come.

I'm unimpressed. When they manage to get one that has the "mop the floor" and "do the dishes" apps, let me know.

Personally, Ive always found these robotic "animals" to be somewhat creepy and a very poor imitation of the real thing. I'd much rather have a robot that acts and looks like a robot for a companion. Stuff like this gives me the urge to destroy it as its a joke.
