World's Largest Hourglass Filled With Silver Balls and a Luxury Sedan For BMW Moscow Launch
Posted by John Mahoney at 1:45 AM on July 16, 2008
For its 7 series Euro launch in Moscow, BMW constructed the monstrosity you see here and filled it with 180,000 silver balls that slowly revealed their new oligarch cruiser. Funny they should pick the city with probably the highest ominous-luxury-sedan-with-90%-window-tint concentration per capita on the continent. I guess that explains the drama--everyone in the Moscow 7 series market probably finds a new US$100k+ ride in their couch cushions every few days, so anything less than a massive hourglass in Red Square with a car inside wouldn't have warranted a glance. Ignore the BMW suits in the following video; let's watch those balls fall.

@N@tedog: Aha! A true Bimmer enthusiast. I love the M3, but sorry and I have to pass on it for an M5. Something about it...

I hope they didn't point any lasers at the thing...

@lpranal: I think even BMW would hesitate at the raw cost of using real silver on 180,000 balls.

All this fanfare for a sedan? Would have hoped to see some crazy new exotic car or something...

"At the start of the build-up, more than 180,000 silvery balls concealed the car"
Actual SILVER balls would have been cool and probably trashed the car. In comparison, this is more like a glorified ball pit without all the urine.

Bimmers are the best cars on the planet IMO. I've wanted an M3 since I was 14... still waiting though.. 12 years later.

Is this what entices rich car buyers? Give me an offroad truck surrounded by trashy babes any day over this fancy crap.

I drove a 7 series once... it felt like an SUV, but with less headroom.
If I'm going to pay that much money for a car, its going to be a sportscar.

My mom has a mid-ninties 7 series, there is something truly awe inspiring about a vehicle that large/heavy being able to accelerate that quickly (and it's just an 'i' not even the 'li'!).
But don't get me wrong it is not really all that fast, it can hang with a stock Mustang GT of the same era, prob not gonna win, but won't get embarrassed either.
Then when you look at the difference in weight, coupled with the fact that it actually handles marginally better than the pusstang...

If GM put in this kind of effort, they'd only need 100,000 layoffs.

You guys do know that 90% of tint is nothing. You can't really see it. The lower the % is the darker the tint is. So Russians probably have %20 to 5% (20% being limo tint).

@bpapa9013: Nothing wrong with that statement, the 7 is what, 3 times the price of a stang GT? I think all the intended audience (Teenagers trying to impress girls, mullet aficionados, balding middle-aged salarymen who are looking to have a midlife crisis on a budget) going fast in a straight line is the be-all and end-all priority.

@lpranal: Actually, I believe the intended audience is the common man who recognizes a superior piece of German engineering who would like a car that is more elegant, comfortable, and whose manufacturer hasn't any extra meanings to it's name, such as Found On Road Dead.
Don't get me wrong, the mustang is a nice car. But a Siebener is MUCH much nicer, inside and out. (stock ;) )

Congratulations, BMW! You have somehow made the 7 even uglier!
The 2006 facelift was a step in the right direction - this is a step backward.
